Chapter 1

I was the abandoned true heiress, brought back home by the police.

I became the object of the entire family's disdain.

The fake heiress, Talia Wall, excelled in everything, with stunning looks, a sweet personality, and stellar grades, worshipped by all as the ultimate academic goddess.

Until the day the college entrance exam results came out, when I crushed Talia by a mile with the city's top score.

Sorry, I had to come clean. I was the real academic star.

On the day the exam results were released, my parents hovered around Talia as she checked her scores, while I sat in the corner munching on sunflower seeds.

A burst of excitement came from their side.

"1502! 1502 points! Mom, Dad, I did it!" Talia threw herself into Angela Wall's arms, who teared up as they embraced.

"Our Talia is the best! I knew you could do it!" Carsten Wall chimed in with a proud smile. "Look at whose daughter Talia is. My daughter is naturally exceptional!" "I booked a restaurant. Let's go celebrate with Talia tonight. I'll grab the car!"

I stayed in the corner, about to check my own results on the computer.

Then Talia's voice, laced with fake concern, cut through.

"Mom, Dad, shouldn't we wait for Laura to check her scores?"

Angela's face twisted into a scowl, her tone sharp. "What's there to see? Her results will only embarrass us. Let's go, no need to wait."

That was how this family always worked. My biological parents didn't like me. To them, Talia was their real daughter.

I was just an outsider.

After nearly a year back in this house, my longing for familial love had been worn away. All I wanted now was to leave.

I heard the front door slam shut. Only then did I open my computer to check my exam results.

1580

Ten points higher than I expected.

I basked in the joy, and my phone buzzed beside me.

I answered a video call.

A man and a woman appeared on the screen-my adoptive parents, Patricia Dale and Kenneth Dale.

"Sweetie, did your exam results come out?" Patricia asked.

I grinned. "They did. I got 1580."

"My gosh! Higher than your brother's score back then! You're amazing, my darling! Let Mom give you a kiss!"

Patricia leaned in, only to be blocked by a hand.

A familiar voice came through.

My grip on the phone tightened for a moment. "Is Johnny there too?"

Patricia turned the camera, and I saw Johnny Dale's handsome face.

My expression froze briefly, but I quickly covered it up.

I gave him a smile. "Hey, Johnny."

When Johnny looked at me, his gaze lingered on my face, his brow furrowing. "You've lost weight."

I nearly let my smile slip.

Patricia asked with a hint of worry. "Are your biological parents treating you poorly? I'm booking a flight back tomorrow. The Wall family, right? If they're bullying my daughter, their company's going bankrupt!"

I couldn't help but laugh at Patricia.

Johnny watched me, his eyes full of concern.

Kenneth sighed. "Laura, we respect your choice, but we don't want you to suffer. If you're unhappy, come home. We'll always have your back."

I felt a warmth in my chest. "I know, Dad. I'm hanging up now. Friends are calling me to celebrate. Have fun abroad!"

I quickly ended the call, tears spilling over despite myself.

I hadn't felt that sad originally, but someone caring about me made my emotions spill out.

Two days later, the senior graduation ceremony arrived.

After breakfast, I stepped outside, only to see Talia in the car, waving smugly at me. "My dear sister, I'm heading out first. You'll have to take a taxi! Ben, let's go."

With that, Talia rolled up the window, leaving me with nothing but exhaust fumes.

I rolled my eyes.

I grabbed a shared bike from the roadside and pedaled to school.

When I reached the school gate, I spotted the campus heartthrob Theo and a few others, with Talia at the center of the crowd.

She stood on the steps, looking down at me with a smug expression.

I had no interest in dealing with them and moved to bypass the group toward the classroom.

Someone stepped in my way.
