His Beautiful Ruin Chapter 1 001 : Her

The first time Inara saw Noah unconscious, she forgot how to breathe. Everything after that came in fragments.

The screech of ambulance doors. Gloved hands lifting her younger brother onto a stretcher. Someone calling for a trauma team while another voice fired questions she couldn't answer.

"What happened?"

"How long was he unconscious?"

"Is he allergic to any medication?"

She remembered only one thing.

"There was blood... Too much of it." Her voice broke.

Noah's hoodie was soaked through. His lower lip was split, one side of his face already swelling, and his breathing came in shallow, uneven bursts as the emergency team rushed him through the double doors marked EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT.

"Miss?" A nurse gently caught her arm before she could follow. "We need to examine him first."

Inara nodded automatically, though her legs felt too weak to carry her.

The doors swung shut. Just like that, Noah was gone from her sight.

The waiting area smelled of disinfectant and burnt coffee. A television mounted high on the wall played a morning news program no one seemed to be watching, while somewhere nearby, a child cried and an elderly man coughed behind a paper mask.

Inara lowered herself into one of the plastic chairs. Only then did she notice the dried blood beneath her fingernails.

Noah's blood.

Her stomach twisted.

Please be okay... Please...

Nearly forty minutes later, a doctor finally approached.

"Noah's guardian?"

Inara shot to her feet.

"Your brother is stable."

The words hit hard enough to make her knees weaken.

"He suffered several fractured ribs, a concussion, and multiple soft tissue injuries. Fortunately, there's no internal bleeding that requires emergency surgery."

She closed her eyes.

Thank God....

"We'd like to keep him overnight for observation."

"Of course. Thank you, Doctor."

The doctor gave her a reassuring smile before walking away, leaving relief and dread tangled inside her chest.

Because surviving was only the first problem. The second arrived five minutes later.

"Ms. Hale?" The woman behind the admissions counter offered her a polite smile. "We need to process your brother's admission."

Inara stepped forward, clutching the strap of her worn canvas bag.

The receptionist typed for a moment before turning the monitor toward her.

"Your insurance will cover part of today's emergency treatment."

Hope flickered...

"The remaining balance is two thousand, eight hundred and forty-six dollars."

Then it disappeared after those words.

Inara stared at the printed estimate. "I'm sorry?"

"This is only the estimated cost through tomorrow morning," the receptionist explained gently. "If additional treatment becomes necessary, the amount may increase."

Inara's fingers tightened around her phone.

She opened her banking app.

Available balance: $517.38.

She swallowed. Hard.

That was everything. Her salary from the previous week. The money she'd been saving for rent, groceries, the electricity bill due next Monday.

Every cent she had.

"I'm afraid we'll need a deposit before he's transferred to a private room," the receptionist said.

Inara looked through the glass toward the corridor where Noah had disappeared.

He was nineteen and should have been worrying about exams, not whether his sister could afford to keep him in a hospital bed.

"I..." Her voice caught. She forced herself to breathe. "Can you give me a few minutes?"

"Of course."

Inara stepped away from the counter and leaned against the nearest wall, gripping her phone until her fingers ached.

There had to be a way.

She could borrow money, sell something, take more freelance work, work through the night if she had to.

She would figure it out. She had to. Because whatever it took, she wasn't going to lose the only family she had left.

Several miles away, another morning started in complete silence. The presidential suite overlooked the city through floor-to-ceiling windows, sunlight spilling across polished marble and dark walnut floors.

An untouched breakfast was on the dining table beside two crystal glasses, while the faint trace of perfume still lingered in the air.

Vanessa stepped out from the bedroom, slipping Lucien's white dress shirt over her shoulders. "I thought we agreed you'd stay for breakfast."

Lucien fastened the cuff of his black shirt without looking up. "I don't remember agreeing to that."

She laughed softly. Bitter one. "You never do."

His phone vibrated on the bedside table. The screen displayed a single name.

Declan Hayes.

Lucien answered immediately.

"What is it?"

His assistant's voice came through the line, calm and professional. "There's been an incident involving Noah Hale."

Lucien's hand paused over his watch. "How bad?"

"He was assaulted outside their apartment approximately an hour ago. Multiple attackers. Emergency services transported him to St. Gabriel Medical Center."

Lucien's expression remained unreadable. "And Inara?"

There was a brief pause. "She intervened."

Lucien's hand stopped completely. "Was she hurt?"

"She wasn't seriously injured, but one of the attackers shoved her into a concrete railing during the assault."

Silence settled over the suite.

"Sir?"

"I'm leaving."

Lucien ended the call. Vanessa watched him reach for his jacket.

"Business?"

"Something like that."

"You'll call me?"

He was already walking toward the door. "I won't."

The suite door closed quietly behind him.

Ten minutes later, Lucien stood inside a private conference room on the executive floor. Declan was waiting for him; a tablet already connected to the large display.

The security footage began without sound.

A dim apartment corridor. Noah appeared first. Four men followed. The confrontation lasted only seconds before fists started flying.

No one seemed to care helping the boy.

Then Inara entered the frame. "Noah!"

She ran toward them without hesitation. She threw herself between her brother and the attackers.

One of the men shoved her hard enough to send her into the concrete railing. She dropped to one knee, but she was back on her feet almost immediately, reaching for Noah.

Declan paused the footage.

"Our security team arrived thirty-four seconds later. Local police responded approximately two minutes after that."

Lucien said nothing. His eyes remained fixed on the frozen image of Inara kneeling beside her unconscious brother, one trembling hand pressed against Noah's bleeding forehead.

Declan continued. "They're both at St. Gabriel now."

He swiped across the tablet. A preliminary hospital report appeared on the screen.

"Mr. Hale is stable."

Lucien finally looked away. "What about the hospital?"

"They've requested an emergency deposit."

"How much?"

"Just under three thousand dollars."

Declan waited. He already knew what was coming.

"Activate the Mercer Foundation."

"The emergency assistance program?"

Lucien nodded once. "Approve the full treatment."

Declan tapped the screen. "I'll have the hospital transfer Mr. Hale to the VIP wing."

"No."

The rejection was instant.

"Standard room," Lucien said. "The best trauma specialist. Whatever he needs."

Declan hesitated before typing again.

"And the billing?"

"The Foundation covers everything."

"If Ms. Hale asks why she was selected?"

"Tell them the case qualified under the Emergency Recovery Initiative."

"She may investigate."

"I know."

"And if she discovers the Foundation belongs to Revani Holdings?"

Lucien adjusted the sleeve of his jacket.

"She won't."

Declan raised an eyebrow. "Because?"

Lucien's gaze returned to the frozen image on the screen.

"Because she doesn't look at people like me."

Declan said nothing.

Lucien slipped his phone into his pocket and turned toward the door.

"Keep watching."

"The hospital?"

Lucien paused at the door.

"Her."
