John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir PC GCMG GCVO CH (1875 – 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, biographer and editor. Outside the field of literature he was, at various times, a barrister, a publisher, a lieutenant colonel in the Intelligence Corps, the Director of Information—reporting directly to prime minister David Lloyd George—during the First World War. Nineteen-year-old David Crawfurd travels from Scotland to South Africa to work as a storekeeper. On the voyage he encounters again John Laputa, the celebrated Zulu minister, of whom he has strange memories. All his old friends are with him and our hero has to convince Bullivant, Blenkiron, Peter Pienaar and the love of his life, Mary Lamington, that he would recognise the chameleon like villain again who must be hunted down and destroyed to avoid defeat of the Allies. The riveting tale contains some chilling descriptions of 'modern warfare'; the new weapon, gas, and comes to a climax with the brave antics of that new breed of men - the Royal Flying Corps.
