Chapter 1

In the first chapter of "Playing Pretend in the Mafia's World," we meet Serena, a young woman who finds herself working as a stripper to make ends meet. She had planned on becoming a choreographer and is not embarrassed about her job, but it's not what she had envisioned for herself. Serena's best friend, Faith, informs her that the Lamberti brothers, including Christian, the man whom Serena had a one-night stand with two months prior, are coming to the club. The Lamberti family owns the strip club and is involved in organized crime. Enzo, one of Lucio's sons, calls Serena "squirrel" and teases her before selecting her to serve drinks to their important guests that evening. Even though Serena is not pleased about the assignment, she is too scared to refuse. Enzo mentions that Christian will be at the private party, which makes Serena nervous and uncomfortable.

Chapter 2

The narrator is in a private room for an important business meeting with powerful and dangerous men, guarded by security. She works for Christian, who introduced her to this area once before. The narrator is nervous and afraid of making a wrong move, as the men are mobsters and can be violent. A man named Marc tries to comfort her, but she still feels uneasy and wants to leave. Lucio, someone important at the meeting, brought her there but instructed others not to touch or breathe near her, which confuses Marc.
The protagonist is working at a meeting with powerful men, unsure of why she was chosen for the job. One man spills champagne on his suit and another comforts her after she nearly faints from nerves. The meeting turns out to be long and boring, and afterwards, Johnny Lamberti checks if she's okay while Christian appears unimpressed and dismisses one of his associates. Finally, they leave and one of her colleagues asks if she's eating well, but she insists that she's fine.

Chapter 3

Serena is feeling sick and throws up several times while her friends watch a movie. She has been feeling ill for three months due to overworking herself and is determined to pay rent, so she forces herself to go to work despite feeling worse the next day. Serena is concerned about her sudden weight gain and asks her friend if she looks fat, but she dismisses it as just gaining some weight. However, Serena feels like she might be pregnant with Christian's baby, even though he shows no interest in her. She works at a club as a stripper and has to interact with Enzo, Christian's brother, who is concerned about her health and criticizes how she's being treated by management.
