Itook my clothes off and tossed them to the side. My hands shook as I ripped a shirt and jeans off the hanger and sent it flying across the room. I nearly tripped as I tried to balance and shoved my leg through each side of my pants. The shirt was much too tight, but I didn’t have time to worry about it. I needed to go. I scooped the discarded bloody clothes off the floor, tossed them into a trash bag, then grabbed my luggage and went to Hero’s room.

He was still sound asleep, even after all of this. “Baby? Baby, come on, wake up. We need to go.”

His eyes opened slowly. “Go where?”

“Come on, baby,” I grabbed his hand and gently pulled him out of bed. I made him dress in his day clothes before he went to sleep. I knew we were going to leave. I just didn’t know it would be like this. “We need to go. Come with mommy.”

He lazily followed behind me as I held his hand and hurried through the home and out to my car. I slid the key into the ignition and didn’t look back as I drove away from the house. I just wanted this part of my life to be over. I’d been through enough already and I needed a fresh start. At least, I hoped that’s all I needed. My past had a way of creeping back into my life at the worst time, no matter how hard I tried to outrun it.

The sunlight poked through the window just above my bed. I blindly reached for my phone on the nightstand to check the time. It was 7:47 am. I sat upright on the bed. From the corner of my eye, I saw Alia laying beneath the covers. Her backside curved like the top of a hill. Her nipples poked through the bed sheet as I stood to my feet and walked over to the mirror.

The gunshot wounds on my chest and shoulder were steady reminders that, just a year ago, I could’ve been dead. They were reminders of how much I did lose on that fateful night.

I had the money to get them covered up with tattoos or pay for a surgical procedure that would make them look less prominent. But, I needed them there. They kept me humble and always reminded me that I had to keep going.

Alia got out of the bed and wrapped her arms around me from behind. “Baby, where are you going? It’s so early and I’m so lonely.”

“I need to get ready and go to work.”

“Really? You can’t stay home with me today? You know I be missin’ you in this house by myself. I mean, it ain’t like you don’t make your own hours. You can stay and go as you please.”

“Yeah, but I set the example. If I take random days off or just don’t show up for work, what kind of example does that set for my employees?” I turned towards her. “You know how I am. I run a tight ship and I’m the example. I need to go in. I didn’t schedule off, so, I’m not stayin’ home.”

“Hey, Dia, can I use your laptop while you’re gone?”

“Yeah, go ahead. Use whatever you want. I’ll be back in a few hours. I need to go pick up Genesis from her daddy house. But, whatever you need, just take it. Except my weed and my money. You need to ask if you happen to find any of that laying around.”

I laughed. “I don’t think you would keep either of those laying around. I don’t smoke anyway, though, and I’m not a thief, so you don’t have to worry about that.”

She smiled. “Girl, you ain’t changed since we were younger. You were always the one that everybody said would grow up and be the next mother Theresa or something.”

Flashbacks of my blood-stained clothing ran though my mind. Ever so often I thought about the violent night I experienced before I got here. I shook the images out of my head, “nah, I wouldn’t say that. We all have our past.”

“Yeah, I’m sure you’ve paid all your parking tickets, too. So, I wouldn’t worry about your ‘past’ too much.” She laughed, but she had no idea. “I’ll see you in a few hours.”

“Ok.”

She closed the door, then I walked to the living room to grab her laptop from under the glass table. Hero followed me in like a puppy. A part of me was happy that he was going to have another child around his age to play with. He still hadn’t settled in since our move. He kept wondering why we left and asking questions about it. I tried to get away with telling him as little as possible, but that didn’t always work. The boy was smart and curious; two valuable characteristics that would make him do well in school and life.
