Prologue
Rayne's pov
I have been a vet for 3 years now, and I love it. I just opened up my own practice a year ago. I love working with animals. It's people I don't like to much. I always wanted to be a pediatrician, but I didn't think I could do it. I chose to work with animals because they don't judge you.
I am a plus- sized woman. People look at me and laugh. I have been teased about my weight all my life. Those haunting words are what prevented me from following my dreams.
I am a good vet. I worked hard to get my own practice. This is where I was meant to be. I was all alone here. Just me and the animals. I liked it that way. I enjoyed being alone.
My family keeps saying I need to find a good man and settle down. Find me a man that doesn't care about my size, and maybe I will. Men don't want big girls. They want little twiggy models that doesn't know how to eat. My knowing how to eat, and loving food was a problem.
I dated before, but it never went anywhere. They were always embarrassed to be seen with me. They wanted to stay in the bedroom, and I wanted more than that. So, I stay single. Less chance of getting hurt that way.
My secretary was on lunch, and I heard the bell go off. Great that meant someone was here. I hated talking with people. Guess it's part of the job to talk to people though.
I walked out front and stopped dead in my tracks. There at the front desk was the sexiest man alive holding a little puppy. Now this was a site that would leave any woman panting.
"Hi, are you Dr. Rayne?"
"Yes, how can I help you?"
"I found this little guy outside my office, and my friend told me about this place. I will pay to have him checked out. If you can't find his owners, I would be happy to take him home with me."
"Okay I will look him over and see if he has a chip. Just fill out this, and I will let you know when I know anything."
I took the puppy from his arms. When our hands accidently touched, I felt like I was on fire. It's been a long time since a man has touched me. I got his information then he left. I took the puppy back and started to look him over when my phone rang.
"Hello."
"Hey Rayne, it's me Josie."
Josie and I have been great friends since high school. She was now married and had a little boy of her own. I was so happy for her.
"Hey Josie, how are things going?"
"Well, I was wondering what you were doing Friday night."
"I have nothing planned. Why what's up?"
"Well, there is this doctor that works with Brantley that I would love for you to meet. It's not a date just come over for a cookout please."
I hated being set up. It never worked out. But I could never tell Josie no.
"Fine what time should I be there?"
"Oh, yay be here by 7. This is going to be great Rayne just wait and see."
We hung up, and I felt panicked. I knew this wasn't going to end well. Men just didn't like a woman with curves.
Kane's pov
I loved being a pediatrician. I knew since I was a kid that I would always be a doctor. But lately I felt like it wasn't enough. All I ever did was work. I was lonely. I wish I had a wife and child to come home too. All my friends are already married with kids.
Every time we went out, I was always the 5th wheel. So, I just stopped going out. I was doing a house call for one of my patients today. He wasn't doing very well, and I knew he needed to be hospitalized. This is the part of my job I didn't like.
Once I had everything set up for my patient to get to the hospital I headed to my practice. When I was walking up to the door, I heard a whimper from a box in front of the door. I ran over to it and saw a small frail puppy. I called my buddy Brantley and asked if he knew any good vets in the area. He told me to go to his wife Josie's friends vet hospital.
I picked up the little guy and took him there. I walked in but didn't see anyone. Then a beautiful woman came out from the back.
Our hands touched and it felt like an electric current went right through me. I left and wasn't in the car only a second when Brantley called me.
"Hey."
"Hey, did you find the vet hospital okay?"
"Yea thanks."
"So, what did you think of Rayne?"
"Honestly, she was gorgeous, but why are you asking?"
"Well Josie wants to play matchmaker. She invited Rayne over for a cookout. You interested."
"What time?"
"Be here about 6:30?"
"I'll be there."
"Okay see you later."
I hung up and hurried of to my practice. I wanted to be done on time so I could see her again. Maybe I wouldn't be lonely for long.

I was at my own engagement party at the Sterling estate when the world started tilting. Victoria Sterling, my future mother-in-law, smiled coldly as she watched me struggle with a cup of tea that had been drugged to ruin me. Before I could find my fiancé, Ryan, a waiter dragged me into the forbidden West Wing and locked me in a room with Julian Sterling, the family’s "fallen titan" who had been confined to a wheelchair for years. The door burst open to a frenzy of camera flashes and theatrical screams. Victoria framed me as a seductress caught in the act, and Ryan didn't even try to listen to my pleas, calling me "cheap leftovers" before walking away with his pregnant mistress. When I turned to my own family for help, my father signed a document severing our relationship for a five-million-dollar payout from Julian. They traded me like a commodity without a second thought. I didn't understand why my own parents were so eager to sell me, or how Ryan could look at me with such disgust after promising me forever. I was a sacrifice, a pawn used to protect the family's offshore accounts, and I couldn't fathom how every person I loved had a price tag for my destruction. With nowhere left to go, I married Julian in a bleak ceremony at City Hall. He slid a heavy diamond onto my finger and whispered, "We have a war to start." That night, inside his secret penthouse, I watched the paralyzed man stand up from his wheelchair and activate a screen filled with the Sterling family's darkest secrets. The execution had officially begun.
For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife. My husband, Jaden, called the songs I poured my soul into "trash," then secretly fed them to his pop-star mistress to make her famous. I fled home in a panic, only to find a message on Jaden's phone confirming my worst fears. His mistress, the woman singing my songs on the radio, was pregnant with the baby he'd always told me I was too weak to carry. The nightmare deepened when I learned the identity of the man from the hotel. He was Carter Mcclain, the ruthless Alpha King-and my husband's older brother. He looked at me with eyes that knew my secret, his cruel smirk promising that my life was now a game for his amusement. Jaden had stolen my music, my dream of a family, and my future, leaving me trapped between his betrayal and his terrifying brother. He thought he had broken me, leaving me with nothing. He forgot he left me with the rage that wrote the songs. And I was about to write their final, brutal verse.

Aurora woke up to the sterile chill of her king-sized bed in Sterling Thorne's penthouse. Today was the day her husband would finally throw her out like garbage. Sterling walked in, tossed divorce papers at her, and demanded her signature, eager to announce his "eligible bachelor" status to the world. In her past life, the sight of those papers had broken her, leaving her begging for a second chance. She had lived a gilded cage, believing she was nothing without him, until her life flatlined in a hospital bed, watching him give a press conference about his "grief." But this time, she felt no sting, no tears. Only a cold, clear understanding of the mediocre man who stood on a pedestal she had painstakingly built with her own genius. Aurora signed the papers, her name a declaration of independence. She grabbed her old, phoenix-stickered laptop, ready to walk out. Sterling Thorne was about to find out exactly how expensive "free" could be.
