As I walked on the congested concrete sidewalk, I could feel someone's eyes on me. I know that this a busy place and thousand of persons were walking on the streets, many of which were going in the same direction or same place that I am going to. But I couldn't help but feel something in my guts telling me that the guy who was ten steps behind me, wearing sunglasses, was following me.
Each time I turned around he would be staring at me then quickly shift his attention when he was caught.
Maybe I was being paranoid, but I just don't think he's a regular New Yorker.
I tried walking a little faster but the only thing that did was to raise my pulse and I didn't want to start panicking for no reason.
It could just be, after all, a regular person walking to the subway station just like me.
But It wasn't a regular person, I could tell by the way he was dressed, the way he walked and the shades on his face. He was someone of high class or status, but I couldn't tell who he was because of the dark sunglasses that were covering his eyes.
Who wears sunglasses at 4:30 pm? That was what caught my attention the first time I turned around.
Stay calm, Kaliyah. Just walk normal, he can't attack you with so many people around.
I couldn't help but look over my shoulder ever so often as I walked down the road. He was taking long strides but not enough to catch me up because every time he got closer I sped up.
Continue walking Kally, He'll leave you alone.
Today is not the day you die.
I had no idea if I should be worried or irritated that a strange man has been following closely behind me since I left the office ten minutes ago. This is exactly how most murders start on TV; a strange man wearing shades follows girl after work.
But this wasn't TV, this is real life. Even if he didn't want to kill me, why the hell was he following me?
I continued walking at the normal pace until I reached a stop light. I involuntarily looked behind me, and I saw him but this time he wasn't looking at me, he was looking at a scene that featured an angry taxi man.
Maybe he wasn't following me after all.
When the light changed to red, I began to cross the street and turned down the road to change my direction. I waited for the right time to turn my head and look if he was following me and he was.
I let out a sigh of frustration. Why the hell is he following me?
Trying not to think about the man that was following me, I diverted my attention buildings and stores that I was passing by. I couldn't help but admire the rich architecture but my mind was somewhere else.
Deciding to look behind me to see if Mr. Sunglasses was still there, I slowly turned my head like I was looking at a passing cab.
And there he was still following me. He was dressed nicely in a suit, but he wasn't wearing a tie and his first two buttons were opened. Even though I couldn't see his eyes I knew he was hella sexy.
Why would someone like him want to follow a girl like me?
I'm just an assistant secretary, nothing big and I wasn't important to anyone.
I needed to know his reasons for following me if he is following me.
Deciding to follow an instinct I turned on my heels and walked straight up to him, stopping in front of him my arms at akimbo.
Under his shades, his brows rose.
"Why are you following me?" I demanded. He was about to open his mouth to say something, but I cut him off by raising my hands and shaking it. "Don't give me crap and start denying it. I know you're following me. What do you want?" I looked at the shades because I couldn't see the eyes that lay behind them. I look up and down at him trying to make out his body posture to see if it was giving any signs away.
I pray to God he was following me because I don't know how I'd handle the embarrassment if he wasn't.
He is very tall, probably 6'4, he needed a shave, but his cheekbones were wonderfully shaped. His lips were small and slightly pink, and his dark hair swept across his forehead messily. He had a mysterious look about him, but I just couldn't pinpoint what it was especially with the shades on.
He finally spoke saying. "People always say looks are everything but I guess looks can be deceiving," I had no idea what he meant but I knew he was trying to insult me.
I continued looking at the mysterious man in front of me.
Who the hell is he?
And why the hell is he following me? If he is following me.
The questions just started popping up in my head. But I wasn't moving on until I got an answer. I raised my brows at my stalker then said, "Look, I don't know you and I don't want to. So, do me a favor and stop stalking me, before I call the cops." I was bluffing because I don't know if I'd go as far as calling the police but maybe my words will ward him off.
He begins to laugh at what I said leaving me to really question who he was. I guess my words didn't affect him. "Calling the police won't help you in this decision, in fact, the police will be on my side, after all, you're the one who is at fault here."
I looked at him with my brows raised and confused.
Me? At Fault? I can't remember doing anything against the law. "Look, you must have mistaken me for someone else. I've never done anything illegal before." I lied. In my teenage years, I was involved in a lot of illegal things, one of which was getting fake IDs but that wasn't anything too major to get in problems. Everyone gets a fake ID these days, especially teens.
"Oh, you've done something more than illegal," he states.
"What have I done that worse than doing something illegally?" I queried. I don't remember doing anything bad, just a normal teen enjoying life.
"Oh, stop being innocent. You know what you did."
I look at him annoyed. I was getting pretty irate at him each second, I spent there looking up at him. I shake my head and turn around and beginning my journey to the subway station, which was my original goal.
Why did hell did I walk up to him in the first place. I am not going to let him waste my time if he isn't willing on being straightforward, he was beating around the bush.
"Alliyah Bisson." He shouts after me. His words grabbed my attention immediately. I sprung around to look at my stalker, ready to correct him from the mistake.
"FYI, my name is Kalliyah Bisson, why don't you go look somewhere else for your mistress," I shout back. With that said, I enter the train station.
Everything made sense now. He was looking for my beloved twin sister, Alliyah. The bitch that ruined my life.
I hate when people mistake me for her.
How could they?
We were complete opposites. The only thing we had alike was that we are identical twins but there was nothing identical about of personalities.
She had hurt me, No, Correction. She had destroyed me.
What she did to me isn't something I will ever forget or even forgive.
Why was he even looking for her? Especially in New York.
I haven't seen my twin in three years, she was probably on a next continent showing her body off, not that I care. I stopped caring when she did.
........................................
Wednesdays for me was just like any other day, I had my lunch at a coffee shop at the corner of the road then I'd return to my building and get my work done. On my way to the elevator Larry, 'the mail boy' said that Mr. Ryan was looking for me and he wanted to speak to me.
I sighed as I press the number to my floor.
The only times Mr. Ryan talks to me is to complain about something I've done or didn't do, other than that our association was limited. I barely saw the man and I was happy about that because he wasn't someone nice.
As I walked to the elevator I started thinking about possible things that I could have done to disobey his orders but there wasn't much. I had done everything I was asked to do and more.
Not bothering to go to my desk to put down my purse, I went straight to Mr. Ryan's office.
After knocking on his door, I heard his deep voice say, "Come in." I flinch and pushed the door opened.
The first thing I saw wasn't my forty-something-year-old boss. I saw the back of a very tall muscular man in a nice suit.
I quickly close the door behind me and walked up closer to the man. I was three steps behind him when he turned around and boy oh boy did he knock me off my feet with his looks.
One word to describe him.
Beautiful.
He had tousled dark brown hair, which was thick and shiny. His eyes were a mesmerizing light brown. His bone structure was fine and perfectly symmetrical. It was manly. He had the kind of face that stopped you in your tracks.
I shake my head slightly to get out of the dazed zone I was in. I turn my gaze to my boss.
His green eyes were blazing, it was obvious he was angry.
Oh lordy. What did I do this time?
"Ms. Bisson. I think it's time for you to pack your bags and leave this company. You're fired." Mr. Ryan said.
"What!" I choked out, "What did I do? I've been a good assistant- secretary. I've done everything for you and Sarah gave me to do. Mr. Ryan you can't do this to be. I need this job." I was now directly in front of his desk, I was trying hard not to cry in front of them. I need this job it is my means of survival. Even if it meant I am to beg, I will.
"Ms. Bisson, I can't have a woman who abandons her child working for me. I believe a child needs his/her parent when growing up and I .."
I cut him off with my shout, "What? Mr. Ryan you've must be mistaken. I've never given birth to a child before, hell I've never been pregnant. I don't even have a boyfriend," I am, after all, a virgin.
"Ms. Bisson are you saying that Mr. Carter is lying." My boss pointed to the man in Armani suit. I turned around to face Mr. Handsome also called Mr. Carter.
I looked at Mr. Carter and then said. "You told him I have a child?" I fix my glasses up my face and look at the man again. I look at his features intently. "Wait a minute, you're the man who was following me yesterday. How dare you tell him I have a child?" I said in rage as I pointed my finger close to his face.
"Alliyah, I .." Mr. Carter said.
"My name is Kalliyah, ah for god sake, my sister's Alliyah." I clarified. There he goes again making the same mistake.
"Ms. Bisson whether it's your sister or not, you're still fired. Larry will escort you out the building." Mr. Ryan said.
"Mr. Ryan please I need...," I started but was cut off.
"Ms. Bisson it's all set. Once a man of high status in the country gives a bad name to you, I can no longer employ you. I can't let you be the reason my company goes down the drain, all that I've worked for. No. No Ms. Bisson it will not happen. Now leave before I have security escort you out instead. I'm sure, you don't want to make a scene, so I suggest you leave immediately." His words hitting me. Of course, I didn't want a scene, especially in this building. The workers didn't know the meaning of privacy. They'll all linger in your business and talk about you until a new source of interest comes.
I turned around and stared at my stalker then I walked out of the office. I hurriedly collect my things from the desk and then exit the building without any further complications. I didn't need to be the girl getting kicked out of Mason and Sons, that would forever be with me if I did because stains don't leave, they stay.
....
I let the tears fall as I walked the busy streets of New York City. Persons past by me and gave weird looks but I ignored them. I didn't care what strangers who I will never see again think of me. All I cared about was what I think of me and at this moment my self-esteem was at it's poorest.
Why do bad things always happen to good people?
All I can think about is what am I going to do, my rent was too expensive, food for my dog. Hell! Food for myself. Jeans will probably put me out his apartment if I can't pay the bill.
What am I going to do?
Just as I'm about to enter the subway, I heard someone shout my name. I turned to see Mr. Carter running to me.
Not him again!
What does he want?
He made me lose my job, my life couldn't get worse than it already is now.
I didn't wait until he reached me. I turned, ignoring his calls and entered the subway. Halfway on the steps, I felt someone grip my hands. I turned around to see no one but the Sexy Beast himself. That fit him, sexy beast. He was sexy, and he was the beast he made me lose my job.
"What do you want from me? Haven't you done enough?" I shouted at him. His light brown eyes staring into my greenish-greyish ones.
He had beautiful eyes. I could see them clearly now without the sunglasses covering them. But I don't care. I don't care how sexy he was or how beautiful his eyes are. He made me lose my job.
"I can help you," his voice calm like he didn't care that he was the reason I was jobless. "You come with me to the coffee shop across the street and I'll tell you why I'm here." Mr. Carter stated.
I stand there looking at him not sure what to say. It was only couple minutes after one and I didn't anything to do at home, so I might as well listened to the great reason he had for making me lose my job.
"Okay, but don't try anything I have a teaser, and I'm not afraid to use it." I glared him in the eyes and remove my arms from his grip. "Let's go," I accepted his offer because I also needed to know why he keeps calling me Alliyah.
Why did he mistake me for that bitch?
