Ayana's POV I sat with my hands clasped together on my lap, trying my hardest to sit still and not arouse anyone's attention. It would not do to look badly behaved in front of my new pack, even though I was anxious. I had just arrived, barely an hour ago, at the Vale Pack compound. The person who had brought me here was a petite but curvy woman named Rayne wearing skinny jeans and a leather jacket, paired with boots that had heels so high and sharp, they were probably functional weapons. She also had a warm aura that helped to calm my nerves.
When we had been in the car, she looked to me constantly from the back seat, as if sensing my need for reassurance. Now, though, after leading me to this study, she had left, telling me to hold on a moment. I looked around myself as I was sitting, having been alone for over five minutes now – I knew that because the constant ticking and the pendulum swings of the grandfather clock on the wall of a corner. The room I was in looked quite prestigious. There were rich green curtains hanging from ceiling to floor, and a large portion of the walls lined with bookshelves. I breathed in deeply, taking in a scent of old books, roses and cedarwood. Another two minutes passed before the door opened again, and I heard the tail end of a statement. "-will not fail me." A blonde woman swept in a green pantsuit swept in, followed by Rayne, who looked even smaller compared to her tall and slender companion. The woman's eyes found me, and they approached me. my previously calm mood was quickly fading away. Tensing, I noted how Rayne stood a few steps behind the woman – clearly, she was not the one in charge here. The blonde woman spoke, having already given me the dreaded once-over. "What's your name, then?" The woman tapped her feet, clearly impatient. "Ayana. Ayana Quail," my voice came out in a low volume that it might have been a whisper. I cleared my throat ass the woman watched me, unimpressed, and I repeated my answer, cringing inwardly. It seems that I was not going to make a good impression after all. "Hmmm," the woman replied, considering. I could feel her eyes on me, as if trying to look for an imperfection. I straightened a bit. "How old are you?" She asked, catching my gaze in hers. "20." That seemed to be it for me, as the woman turned to Rayne and spoke to her in low tones, so that I would not hear. I bit my lip, turning my gaze to the grandfather clock and counting the seconds as they passed. I tuned out the bits I could hear from their conversation because it did not matter what my opinions were anyways – I was an Omega slave being sold to one of the powerful packs of the region. That enough was hard work. The rest of the day went by in a blur, with Rayne giving me a soft wave as she left the compound in the same car that she had brought me here in, and I was being taken to another house – a much smaller one about 10 minutes away. I trudged along, weary from the journey, always making sure to keep two steps behind her, so as not to draw her ire. They were always like that with slaves. After being assigned a room with a small window and bed and not much else, I was asked to drop my small backpack of personal items before I was given a brief tour of the Pack compound. Mostly, the tour was of the Omegas Quarter, along with the training grounds near it. Yet I did not see the Alpha, or the Beta. They were busy, from what Agathe (the blond stern woman) had said, and that I need not bother myself with whether they see or did not see me. she would report to them and that was that. Work began for me immediately, and by the time I was done washing plates and sweeping the training grounds, I was tired and had nothing else to do but flop on my small bed, drifting off to sleep with immediacy. It was not until two days later that I would see him. My day was a blur; I was one of the Omegas assigned to clean the large hall used for pack meetings, and I had barely finished wiping down one of the white columns that lined the hall on each side, when I felt something brush past me. or rather, like someone walked past me, that I needed to turn around and see. It was a gut feeling that made me whip my head back and slowly straighten from my squatting position. I do not know how to describe it, but the moment I set my eyes on him, I knew who he was. His aura gave it off; an Alpha in his prime. He was dressed in a white muscle tee, leather jacket, and jeans that hugged his bum so well that I could barely take my eyes of it. I did not know when my eyes moved from his figure to his chestnut-coloured hair, and his sea-blue eyes. I don't know how long I stood there. He was laughing at something his friend said. My heart thumped at the indescribable sound of his laugh – baritone so rich and smooth. He was gorgeous. Too gorgeous to be real. I swallowed, unaware of everything but him. My eyes took in every inch of him, like I was thirsty in the desert and he was an oasis. I watched him until he was out of sight, not moving from my position. Of course, he did not see me, though. How could he? An Alpha like that would not have much time to notice a slave Omega. I clutched the cleaning rag to myself and did not care if it would stain my dress. "Alpha Callum!" I heard someone call out, and it jolted me from my trance somewhat. I slowly went back to cleaning, dipping the rag in the soapy water and wringing the life out of it. However, as I cleaned, my mind was somewhere else; I was still thinking of Alpha Callum. How majestic he looked. The perfect Alpha. Throughout the rest of the day, I kept getting distracted by thoughts of him. It was by luck that I did not get scolded. That night, when I went to bed, I had my mind still filled with thoughts of him. Like a lovesick girl, a smile came unbidden to my lips, as I lay thinking of the Alpha of Vale Pack. I shut my eyes, picturing those strong arms holding me, his smile being aimed at me. how his rich voice would sound if he said my name. But other thoughts began to invade my mind too; ones that told me I was a fool, daydreaming rubbish. I sighed, letting my hands fall away from my face and curling up under the sheets. I knew that I barely had a chance with him – he was the Alpha and probably had many women laying themselves at his feet. I did not even know if he was mated. He could be, and I would be a fool for thinking of him then. But if he was unmated, would he still even look at me? I was a slave, which meant I could not properly mate with anyone unless my freedom was bought. I sniffed, trying to will away the fresh tears prickling my eyes. Why did my parents have to be so poor? Why did they have to sell me? I mean, I understand why they did, but that did not mean it did not hurt. I felt lost now, in a sea of new people and new rules once more. Vale Pack was supposed to be the place where I would be now, but I was not sure how I would adjust to everything. It has been years since I was first sold, and my life since then had been a cycle of uncertainty. Would I ever have my freedom? I often prayed to the moon goddess that I would meet someone kind, good and who would think to buy my freedom. I could never hope to buy myself off. it had to be someone else paying for me to be free. I had heard a lot of stories, about how slaves like myself had been freed by kind-hearted strangers who would take them away from the pack they were enslaved to, and give them a happier life. Would there ever be someone for me? One could only dream. I turned away from the window, covering myself with the only thick blanket in the room, trying to fall asleep, and dream of a life where I could be free. But as those dreams faded, a lovely dream of Callum and I dancing under the moonlight kept me company.
