ISABELLA'S POV
"I do not need such humongous flowers on my hair mama! I'm going to a ball not a garden festival!" My voice is strained as I pull out ninety percent of the flowers that were rooted in my long red hair by my mama. My green eyes scrunch in irritation and my rather long lashes flick rather ridiculously.
My pink lips form a thin line as I take in my appearance in the mirror. Mama runs her hands through her red hair and sighs.
"Isabella! How do you plan on attending the ball looking so..."
"Normal mama, I plan on looking normal" I slowly turn around to face her scowling face and I almost burst out laughing but the fear of being scolded keeps me in check.
Mama's brown eyes scrutinize me intently, her lean hands stubbornly placed on either side of her waist. Her sharp jawline hardens stubbornly and she flicks her rather short lashes uncomfortably.
"Oh goodness! I should give up on getting you ready at all. Ellen is the easy one"
"I keep telling you that mama, Isabella is rather difficult" Ellen's excited voice fills my room as she literally jumps inside, her long blonde hair bouncing around her.
I scoff playfully "tis not a sin to be difficult. You seem rather excited today" I say noting the gleam in her chocolate brown eyes.
Isabella is my younger and only sibling, you can say we're polar opposites and twins at the same time. Her hair is blonde just like our papa's while mine is red just like our mama's. I got papa's green eyes while she got mama's brown eyes, but her eyes are way more darker and mysterious than Mama's light and simple eyes.
People always say that we have a striking resemblance despite all the differences. Sometimes I can't help but disagree. Like our height, while Ellen is of average height, I'm rather tall. Not extremely tall but I'm taller than Ellen and mama.
The only things Ellen and I have in common has to be the length of our hair, colour of our lips, length of our eyelashes and structure of our nose. Rather than that, you can barely tell we're sisters, except we're standing with our lookalike parents.
"Of course, tis not news that I am elated. My good friend Elena just made it known to me that there will be a special announcement at the ball this evening. Tis lovely to experience such. Tis been quite tiring these days"
"And why is that?" I ask sitting on my bed.
Ellen looks from me to mama before answering "Tis been quite overwhelming lately. There's been no gossip to feast on Isabella. I can't wait to hear the big announcement"
"Tis true. A little gossip will go quite the disteance" mama says pinching her neck "word got in that today's ball is a must. Kindly get your sister ready Ellen. I have to make sure the butler has got the flowers I requested for Mrs Andrea. I've given up on getting Isabella ready" mama says before strolling out of the room.
I roll my eyes before walking back to the mirror.
"Why is your corset so loose Isabella? Your bodice is barely alluring! No gentleman will spare you a glance. I forbid it! You shan't attend the ball like this" Isabella hastens to me and starts pulling on the strings of my corset, trying to make it suffocatingly tight.
I let out a strained gasp as I struggle to catch my breath "Ellen! Do you intend on taking me to my grave? Tis too tight!"
"Tis not! You're too stubborn, tis barely hugging your waist. Just hold on a little" Ellen insists on her torture despite my protests.
"Why are you even keen on getting me ready today? You barely care about my dead fashion sense"
"well today I very much care. What if a wealthy Lord is in attendance? I shall want him to meet this stubborn sibling of mine"
"you search for another wealthy Lord? You have dozens of Lords sending you flowers and courting you. I thought you must have chosen one by now. You seemed interested in Lord Shapin, you both look..."
"not wealthy enough!" Ellen says cutting me off.
I turn to look at her "what?"
"He's not wealthy or ranked enough. I do not desire to be some ordinary lady or mistress. I want some status Isabella! I want the society to respect me, I want more comfort"
"You are the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, you have a lot of comfort and status Ellen. What more do you desire? Besides, Shapin is a viscount. That's still a lot of comfort!"
"tis not enough, his ranking is adequate but I want the higher society. I want more and I shan't settle for less"
"but is love not enough? In everything you stated I did not hear anything of relation to love..."
"there's no such a thing as love Isabella. Tis barely a word, if I get married to a man wealthy and ranked enough, I shan't care what he does. As far as I'm recognized as his and I own the comforts, he can go around all he wants"
"Ellen! Tis not proper to have such wishes..."
"tis proper to me Isabella. Now enough of all these love talks, I need to dress you for the ball. I can't wait to be of attendance"...
I cowered at the presence of the man in front of me. His presence was laced with power, wealth, danger and dominance. He ruled the underworld with an iron fist, his countenance void of emotions and warmth. He was feared by all and now I was caught in his trap. I committed a crime, I killed his sister. It was a question to his power and I knew his answer would crush me to pieces yet I couldn't help but shiver at his touch. Maybe, just maybe this mafia don would break me in the way I want.
