"Good morning." I greeted my dad and gave him a morning kiss on the cheek.
"You're up. Where's Kimiko?'' Dad asked as I took my seat beside him.
"She'll be here soon. Actually, I've been up for a while. Kimiko kept disturbing me in my room." I reported to Dad, making him chuckle before he served me a plate with ham and rice.
"Aren't you used to your sister's antics by now?"
"'Um... Dad, I'm used to it, really. I might as well just remove the door to my room and let her come and go as she pleases." I said, annoyed, but Dad just laughed.
"How are Lueha and Hamari doing?"
'They're okay, nothing much has changed.' I replied, taking a bite of my ham.
"Good morning, Dad."Kimiko greeted, kissing Dad on the cheek.
"Alright, let's eat. Afterward, I have something important to discuss with both of you." Dad suddenly turned serious, catching Kimiko's excited response.
"What's that, Dad?"
"I said, after we finished eating. Excited, Kimiko?'
'Oh, I said after we finished eating.' Kimiko playfully retorted, not fully believing Dad.
Kimiko's pov.
After our meal, we went straight to Dad's office, and it was clear that the upcoming discussion was significant.
"Okay, I won't beat around the bush. I want you two to go to the Philippines and enroll at Haruko University. Find out why many of our mafia associates are disappearing. You've learned a lot about combat, and you're well-versed in using various weapons.'
Akane's pov.
I knew that wasn't the only reason, and I sensed a deeper motive behind Dad's decision. Even though he didn't explicitly say it, I already knew.
"But Dad!"
"'No buts, Kimiko."
"How will you manage here, Dad?"
"I can handle myself, Akane. Don't worry; I have plenty of people watching over me," Dad assured and took a sip of his juice.
"Even so, Dad, it's better if we're here with you. We can ensure your safety."
"Please, Akane, you need to go. I'm begging both of you and Kimiko."
"And one more favor... You need to wear nerdy attire." Dad dropped a bombshell, making Kimiko widen her eyes in surprise. That was something she absolutely hated.
"Wait, wait, what?!"
"You heard me right, Kimiko?"
''But what about my fashionable clothes, Dad? How can you make me wear nerdy clothes at Haruko?"Kimiko protested, visibly upset.
''Okay, choose between dressing like a nerd or I'll take all your credit cards and cars.''
''No need for that, Dad. You know I'll agree, right, Akane?' Kimiko gave me a pleading look, and I just nodded, knowing how much she loved her cars.
''See, Dad, I told you."Kimiko grinned at Dad, even though she had already finished eating. She really knows how to bring a celebration into Dad's office.
"Alright, go to your rooms now to pack. You have an early flight tomorrow. I'll have the driver pick you up at the airport, along with the maids to prepare for your arrival at the mansion."
''Okay, Dad."We both replied, and Kimiko added a quick plea to take care of Gri.''
''Akane, are you ready for tomorrow?''
I gave Dad a reassuring smile. 'Yes, Dad.''
''Okay, I'll go to my room first.''After saying that, Kimiko left.
After five hours...
''I was about to sleep when Dad knocked on my door. ''Dad? Come in.''
''Dad sighed, looking somber. "Akane."
''What is it, Dad?''
''I know it's difficult, but it's been five years, my child. It's time for you to move on and find happiness.''
I held Dad's hand to let him know I'm okay and not ready to let go yet. ''I know, Dad, but it's hard for me to forget him.''
"But you must, Akane, for your own happiness. I'm sorry for putting you on this mission."
''It's okay, Dad. I understand.''
Dad kissed my forehead, and I wished Mom were still here. ''Thanks, just don't forget that I love both you and Kimiko dearly. Never forget that.''
''We love you too, Dad.''
''Alright, I'll leave you to rest.''
Dad left, and I thought he was right. It's been five years since Riffin's loss, and maybe it's time for me to forget him. Leaving the mafia world after that incident and distanced myself from trouble. Now, leaving Dad alone here is a big no for me. I can't risk his life just to solve problems within our mafia connections.
''Good morning, Akane. Wake up; it's already morning.''
''I'm still sleepy, Kimiko.''
''Do you remember what Dad told us yesterday?'' Kimiko asked, reminding me of our conversation with Dad.
''Oh, right! I almost forgot. I'm sorry, Kimiko.''I apologized to her and quickly grabbed my towel, realizing mine was already used up.
''It's alright. Hurry up and take a shower. Good thing I came to your room; otherwise, Dad would have sent the guards to carry you to the airport.'
''Wow, I'm embarrassed. You should have said so; I would carry you home when you're drunk.''
''Oh, please. I'm just kidding with you.'' Kimiko said, walking out in mock annoyance.
"Well, don't joke with someone who's already awake, especially not with someone freshly awakened."
After three hours of preparing our stuff, Kimiko and I finally made our way downstairs.
''Take care over there, and don't act suspicious. I'll call you, and Akane, I'll take care of Gri.''
''Okay, Dad. Please take care of him.'' I didn't bother saying goodbye to Gri; he might wake up and not let me leave.
''Can you handle going back to that place and facing everyone?'' Kimiko asked seriously, staring out the car window.
''Of course, I can.'' I replied, fastening her seatbelt and adjusting her hair, which got tangled in her haste earlier.
Kimiko suddenly hugged me, and I realized tears were streaming down my face. She wiped them away. "Is it time, Akane? I know it's hard to forget what happened between you and him, but you need to let go. Remember that we're here for you, along with Dad and our cousins."
After three hours of flight, they arrived in the Philippines.
And that's why she will also meet Austin Valley, the son of the owner of the school he attends who likes her. The question? Will Kath still choose his husband even if he forces her to sign their annulment? Or will she choose to love again and give Austin Valley a chance? And what if someone else came into her life to propose marriage to her and that was Angelo? Will she say Yes? or not?
Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
Eliana reunited with her family, now ruined by fate: Dad jailed, Mom deathly ill, six crushed brothers, and a fake daughter who'd fled for richer prey. Everyone sneered. But at her command, Eliana summoned the Onyx Syndicate. Bars opened, sickness vanished, and her brothers rose-one walking again, others soaring in business, tech, and art. When society mocked the "country girl," she unmasked herself: miracle doctor, famed painter, genius hacker, shadow queen. A powerful tycoon held her close. "Country girl? She's my fiancée!" Eliana glared at him. "Dream on." Resolutely, he vowed never to let go.
Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.
Her fiance and her best friend worked together and set her up. She lost everything and died in the street. However, she was reborn. The moment she opened her eyes, her husband was trying to strangle her. Luckily, she survived that. She signed the divorce agreement without hesitation and was ready for her miserable life. To her surprise, her mother in this life left her a great deal of money. She turned the tables and avenged herself. Everything went well in her career and love when her ex-husband came to her.
I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.
