Simisola's POV
My legs rested comfortably on Adeolu's thighs as he played a video game on his laptop. I would never understand the heads or tails of how it worked however he loved playing these but as long as it made him happy, I was happy too.
My back ached and I wanted a rub but he was busy. My stomach had started showing and Adeolu was still not as excited as I expected him to be about our baby.
He was always talking about taking things slow, and that my health was more important to him than any child. I knew that but I wanted this baby so bad I could taste it.
I rubbed my hands across my chest slowly, trying to ease the pain that had been building for the last three days. Ade glanced up from his game when he heard my slight wince.
"You okay, Babe?" "I don't know, just have this slight discomfort here" I gestured towards my chest region.
Pausing his game, he faced me fully, "Should we go see a doctor?" "You know we have to be extra careful, especially with the baby on the way".
"I know and I'm okay, babe" I reassured him as he turned back to his game.
I got up to get another bag of snacks from the kitchen, when the pain hit again. This time it was more intense and painful. I doubled over, holding the edge of the dining table.
"Babe, I need help" my voice came out so tiny I didn't think Ade heard me. But he did, and was by my side in less than a second.
Gently guiding me, we went to the car and to the hospital. The fifteen minutes it took us to get to the hospital felt like the longest in my life.
The wait for the doctor, test results, routine check up, and diagnosis was hell.
"Good afternoon, Doctor"
I glanced up and saw Doctor Olumide, the doctor who had attended to us since we started coming here.
After pleasantries were exchanged, we looked at him, hoping for the best but expecting the worst.
"The news doesn't look good, Simisola" He stared at me with compassion.
"What is wrong again?" I asked tearfully.
"Your heart has become extremely weak, the pressure of carrying a child, in addition to the issues you had, has caused a debilitating effect."
"What exactly are you saying, Doctor?" Ade seemed impatient and I wondered why.
"I'm saying, your fiance's heart is in stage four of the heart disease and she has very little time to live"
"No, please no" tears dropped in great rivulets from my cheeks.
"What about my baby?" I whispered
"You have two options, carry to full term and undergo a cesarean session because the pressure of pushing would be not good"
"Or you have a therapeutic abortion and be able to live for longer"
"How much time do I have without the abortion?"
"Between six months to a year of extreme rest is taken"
"What about with the abortion?" Adeolu asked
I gasped, why will he think I'll even consider taking the life of my only seed just to live longer?
"With the abortion, she may be able to live up to two years"
"We would take that option" without any consultation with me concerning my wishes, Adeolu made that choice.
It was heartbreaking.
"No, no I won't"
"What do you mean, you won't?"
"That would be murdering an innocent child just to live for few miserly years"
"I can't do it"
"It's not murder, Simi, it's medically advised"
He only called me my name when he was pissed.
"It doesn't matter how you put it, Ade, how do you think I'll live, knowing I killed my child?"
"The pain alone would kill me"
"Well, you'll die either way" he offhandedly threw.
I couldn't believe my ears. I stared at him like I was seeing him for the first time. How much of this change have I been blind to? When did he change so badly?
"Why would you say that?" I couldn't breathe from the pain his words caused.
He kept mute and just walked out.
The doctor excused himself after some feeble attempt at comfort and asked the nurse to make sure I wasn't disturbed for as long as I needed.
My heart was breaking anew.
The realization that maybe Adeolu didn't love me as much as I did him.
I wanted to give him this child to remember me by when I was no longer but he didn't seem to want any part of it.
What had I gotten myself into?
The tears won't stop falling. I mourned for my life, and for my child who would not know how much its mother loved it.
And I mourned for the relationship I had built for four years thinking we were on the same page.
The days after I was discharged blurred together.
Two weeks after Adeolu apologized, I still couldn't find the peace I needed. Despite his apology, he still insisted that what he wanted was what was best for us both.
He wanted more time with me while I was throwing it away. Not even the ultrasound of the baby and the beautiful picture of our daughter could change his mind.
His adamant refusal to see from my view upset me. Deciding I needed to rest, I took a trip to the quiet sleepy village I grew up in.
The days spent staring at nothing but fruitful farmlands and streams made me better.
I felt my baby kick and knew I was giving her the best option and I would do my best to set her up for her life.
Packing up early, I decided to face the real world again. Feeling energetic and happy for the first time in a long while.
Adeolu won't be home until later, so I decided to surprise him and not tell him I was on my way back.
