A young lady was sprawled on the bed, lying on her stomach, a white blanket covering her bare back. Across the bed sat a young man on a leather chair, his brows furrowed as he gazed at her.
After a moment of thought, he stood up, moving to sit on the edge of the bed. He examined her, his gaze traveling to her lips. He stared intently at her lips, moving his lips to meet hers.
He reaches out his hand, brushing away strands of her hair from her face. Her hair was golden brown, just like honey. He raises her, pulling her close to his body, sending shivers down her spine at his touch.
With her eyes tightly closed, she fell deep in thought. The girl is Alexandra, the man is Martin, her father and this was the result of a punishment dealt by the man to his child.
Living with an abusive father, Alexandra is forced to accept the reality that he will never love her as his daughter nor treat her as one but she doesn't blame her father, after all, she caused all this, her birth caused all this.
After a certain event, she finds herself wondering if her life would have been better off if she lived under a roof that unites her to her father's cruelty or would it be worse?
Martin stared at Mary for a while, his gaze trailing after her as she moved about the kitchen cutting up vegetables while simultaneously watching the boiling soup, his lips curving as a smile unknowingly appeared on his face.
He remembers the past, the hardship and the struggle he had gone through to make her his woman. The competitors and the setbacks.
In a way, the struggles and hardships were the reason He was now married to her. If not for the struggles, he would have never realized how much he loved her; even more than he thought he did, which seemed impossible before.
His mind drifts, resurrecting old memories. He remembers the rejection, from both her parents and his. It was like the world was against them back then, that was why he had struggled even more; because he believed that good things do not come easily.
She was the best thing that had ever happened to him. He sighed, his smile widening as he remembered the feeling of ecstasy he felt when their parents finally consented to their marriage, he had thought he could never be happier, yet here she was, in all flesh and blood, carrying his baby, their baby.
He leaves the warmth of his blanket as he stands up from the couch, walking to the kitchen area and embracing her from behind. He nuzzles her neck, making loving sounds as he gently caresses her swollen stomach. She closes her eyes, chuckling and tilting her head to give him a better view of her neck. "Your belly looks more swollen than it should be, is that normal?" "stop exaggerating Martin," Mary giggled, placing her palm over his.
"Soon, the baby will be out and you won't be able to stop loving her, or do you think I'll be pregnant forever?" Mary planted a kiss on his cheek, cupping his face in her delicate palm she looked into his eyes, a beautiful smile blossoming on her face.
Then she laughs, gently pushing him away so she can get back to what she was doing. Martin smiled helplessly; going back to the sitting area, he sat and then continued to watch her move around the kitchen, his eyes occasionally closing as he enjoyed her melodious humming.
Martin roughly parked his car, not even bothering to close the door as he ran into his house. He slammed into the door, it wasn't open. "Damn!" He said, his anxiousness growing as he fumbled around his pockets for his keys. After a bit, he unlocks the door, dashing into the house as he screams her name. He searched, room after room until finally, he found her. She had passed out already.
He rushed to her side, his heart almost bursting out of his chest as he was gripped with panic. "Mary! Mary! Please wake up baby, please!" He taps her face gently, his hands barely stable. Suddenly, she stirs, her eyes gently open up to gaze at him.
A small smile blossomed on her face but it suddenly turned into a grimace as she let out a heart-wrenching scream. It felt like she pulled multiple vocal cords after that scream. Martin felt his blood run cold, a shiver running down his spine. Without delay, he carried her bridal style and rushed to the car outside.
The drive to the hospital was agonizingly slow to Martin, no matter how fast he willed the vehicle to move, it never seemed enough. After arriving at the nearest hospital, Mary was immediately rushed into the ER and after much persuasion, Martin finally agreed to stay in the waiting room. 'It has been three hours now, why is there no news yet?' Martin thought, panic spreading through him again as he began to pace around the waiting room.
Shortly after, a doctor came out. Martin rushed to him, his eyes desperate as he clung to the doctor. "Doctor, how is she? How is my wife? Please tell me she's okay!" The doctor stared at him for a while, his expression one of pity and helplessness.
Martin seemed to guess that something was wrong, he took a step back as he asked the doctor again. "Please tell me she's okay! That is all I care about. Please tell me she's alright!" The doctor sighed, deliberately on his words carefully so as not to say what might put him in trouble. "The patient suffered severe blood loss, resulting in her being unable to birth to the child.
In situations like this, we usually prioritize the mother's life, but in this case, we rescued the child first as per your wife's orders." Martin's eyes widened in shock as he refused to accept what he was hearing.
He knew what the doctor's speech was prepping him for but he didn't want to believe it. "By the time the child's condition was stable, we had already lost your wife. I'm sorry for your loss." The doctor finished. "No! No! I don't believe you, where is my wife? Let me see my wife!" Martin finally lost it, he began to rush towards the ER but he was stopped by other doctors. "I'm sorry sir but we can't allow you in there." One of them said, trying to console Martin. "I'll sue this hospital! I'll sue you all if you don't bring me my wife! She was alive when I brought her her, wasn't she? I'll destroy this place if you don't let me see my wife!!" "You are joking! Yes, this is all a prank, just a prank my wife put you up to right? That lady, she's always been mischievous," Martin chuckled, trying to give himself hope but one gaze at the doctor's face and the despair came crashing down once more.
Martin finally lost hope, he slumped to the ground, breaking down into tears. "Please, please let me see my wife." He cried for hours. Mary was his love, his world, his life. What would he do without her? People say there are five levels of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
At that moment, it was like something was taken out of Martin, his eyes became hollow and he suddenly became abnormally calm. A few minutes later, a doctor approached him.
"Have you calmed down Mr Martin?" He asked, but when he met Martin's eyes, he felt a chill run down his spine. Those eyes were empty. "Yes, I have. Can I see my wife now? I just need to confirm by myself that she's dead." The doctor wanted to reject him once more, but seeing his terrifying eyes, he just nodded as he led the way into the morgue.
Martin opened the white cloth, looking at his wife's lifeless body. He stared for minutes, his thoughts unknown, but one thing was for sure, he had accepted his wife's death. "Mr Martin, can you please follow me to see your daughter?" The doctor asked with a shaky voice. Martin just nodded his head.
He followed the doctor out of the morgue and into the baby section. He stood in front of her, she looked so little. A pink blanket was wrapped around her, signifying her gender. She has a small respirator attached to her face and lots of stuff attached to her body to monitor her coupled with other machines. She looked fragile and delicate. Seeing her, Martin felt no love for the child. Not even a bit.
He stared at the child, a creepy smile appearing on his face as he swore to avenge his wife. What better way to appease his wife's soul than granting eternal torment to the one who killed her?
