Lisa's POV,
"Alexander Lucas?" I muttered to myself, picking up the phone and dialing my secretary's desk.
"When karma chooses to be on your side," I thought, shaking my head in disbelief.
"Send Alexander Lucas in," I ordered, my voice urgent and clipped. There was a beat of silence on the other end of the line, and I could almost feel Judith's hesitation.
"But, ma'am," she started, her words trailing off. "it's not his turn to be interviewed," Judith said, her voice hesitant and uncertain.
"I am the boss here, right?" I asked, my tone stern. "Send Mr. Lucas in immediately."
There was another pause, and then a small sigh. "Yes, ma'am," she said, her voice deflated. "I'll send him right in."
I hung up the phone, feeling a surge of Anticipation. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. This was no time to lose my cool. I needed to be at the top of my game. I took one last look in the mirror, checking my appearance. I couldn't let this person see me looking anything less than my best.
As I pored over the resume and cover letter in front of me, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and disbelief. Somehow Alex had found his way back to my life after five years. A sense of anger and bitterness welled up inside me. It all came rushing back - the betrayal, the pain, the anger. I had spent years trying to put it behind me, but now it was all coming back to the surface with just the thought of seeing him again.
There was a knock on my door, and I said, "Come in." I turned around to back the door.
"Good morning, ma'am," He stammered, his voice shaking slightly. I could tell he was nervous.
I knew that voice. It was a voice that haunted my nightmares, that had plagued my memories for years. It was a voice I had hoped never to hear again. But there it was, clear as day, standing in my office. There was something different about the voice, it sounded humbled unlike the proud man I knew few years back.
""What do you want?" I asked, my voice harsh and cold. I didn't bother to turn around and face him, keeping my back to him as I spoke.
"I'm here for the interview, ma'am," he stammered, his voice full of nerves.
I scoffed, my frustration growing by the second. "You're not qualified," I said bluntly. "You're wasting my time, and your own. I suggest you leave, before I have security escort you out."
"Please, just give me a chance," he pleaded. "I promise I won't let you down. I'll do anything to prove myself, I'll work harder than anyone else here. Just please, don't turn me away."
I couldn't help but laugh. "You don't remember me, do you?" I asked, turning to face him. "Five years ago, I was in your shoes. I begged you to give us a chance. And what did you do?"
I watched as the realization dawned on his face, his eyes growing wide with understanding. "You're... "You're Lisa," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I never thought I'd see you again. I'm... I'm so sorry. I didn't realize who you were."
"It's too late," I said, shaking my head. "You can't undo what you did. You can't take back the way you treated me. And even if you could, I'm not sure I would want you to."
I could see the hurt in his eyes, the regret and remorse that was etched on his face. But I couldn't bring myself to care. He had done too much damage, had broken me too many times. I had spent years putting myself back together, and I wasn't about to let him or my sister break me again.
"Lisa, please, let me explain," he pleaded, taking a step towards me. But I held up my hand, stopping him in his tracks.
"Don't you dare take another step!" I shouted, my voice cracking with emotion. "What is there to explain, Alexander? That you ran off with my stepsister? That you left me pregnant and alone? Is that what you want to explain?"
I felt the rage boiling inside me, a mix of pain and anger that had been simmering for years.
"Please, Lisa," he begged, taking another step towards me. But I was having none of it. I stood my ground, my eyes blazing with fury.
"Don't come any closer," I said, my voice firm and commanding. "You left me to die, and now you expect me to just forgive you? To pretend like nothing happened? It's too late for that, Alexander. You made your choice, and now you have to live with the consequences."
He stood still, his face pale and drawn. I could see the regret in his eyes, but it was too little, too late.
"But you survived," Alex said, his voice full of false remorse.
I could tell he was just saying what he thought I wanted to hear, not what he really felt. It was infuriating, and I couldn't hold back my anger any longer.
"You think that's all that matters?" I spat, my voice dripping with disgust. "You betrayed me, not just with another woman, but with my stepsister! And now you expect me to just forgive and forget, like none of it ever happened? Are you insane?"
"Lisa," he said softly, taking a step towards me. I could see him reaching out, his hand extended towards me. But I had no intention of falling for his tricks. He was a master manipulator, and I knew better than to trust him.
"I said don't come any closer!" I yelled, my voice shrill with rage.
"Don't you dare test me, Alex. I knew you would come crawling back when you heard about my father's passing and the reading of his will. You know I'll be getting the lion's share of his inheritance, and all of a sudden, you're sorry? You're a snake, Alex, and I'm going to make you pay. Mark my words."
"I know I hurt you, but please, just listen to me," Alex said, desperation creeping into his voice. "Your stepsister, Susie, she was the one who put the idea in my head. She told me you would never be happy with me, that I would never be able to give you the life you deserved. She said it was better if I just left, and I was such a fool, I believed her."
I shook my head, my anger turning to cold fury. "So you're trying to pin this all on Susie, are you?" I said, my voice dripping with disdain.
I reached for the phone on my desk and dialed the security line. "There's a man in my office," I said, my voice shaking with anger. "He's threatening me, and I need you to come and get him out of here."
As I spoke, I could see the fear in Alex's eyes.
"Lisa..please," The security guard appeared in the doorway, his eyes trained on Alex. Without a word, he motioned for him to stand up and follow him out of the office. Alex glanced back at me, his eye pleading.
"That's just the beginning," I said, my voice cold and hard. "I have to avenge my child, the one you so callously turned your back on." I flung the papers at him, my anger boiling over.
He caught them with a start, his eyes wide with shock. "But I... I didn't know," he stammered, his voice weak and uncertain. "You didn't tell me you were pregnant. How could I have known?"
I narrowed my eyes at him, my fury at its peak. "You could have asked," I hissed, my words dripping with venom.
There was a strange sense of satisfaction as I watched the security guard drag him from the room. It felt like justice, like I was finally getting back at him for all the pain he had caused me. It reminded me of the day he had left me, how I had pleaded with him to stay, how I had begged and begged and he had still walked away.
