A young abanaki woman in Northern Vermont has to adapt to the ever changing word around her. Could one of them changes be love and a family of her own?
Feather Lynn Arrow barely a high school graduate looked around at the undeveloped land her people were forced to make into a town and reservation. Located outside of Swanton Vermont. Ever since extremist Democrats took over they vowed to make things easier on people. Yet the whites and those with tribal roots were treated lesser than. Most had seen it coming. Her parents took the cowards way and killed themselves 6 years ago. So due to laws beyond her, she was sent to live with her grandparents in what was then "free" America. She had learned many trades in high school.
Now the new Main Street had the basics much like could be found in the pioneer days. There was a big building that was a combination post office, grocery store, and barbershop.
The government had installed a highly monitored gas station. There was a Mayors office and land Allotment office. She had to go get the land officers yet more democrats appointed men and 1 returning Abanaki. There were 3 side streets all named after trees. Her grandparents had a nice one close to the mayor's office as her grandfather was mayor.
Her grandmother did household duties and Feather currently was a jack of all trades.
Her wallow talkie rumbled to life. Her grandfather asking her to join him in a video conference with "big man" as he called government. She hurried to her cabin and got herself decently dressed. What this meeting called at last minute was for she had no clue.
She got there in record time. The meeting was about the placement of the men coming. They would be there permanently as none were "attached". They expected the tribe to find suitable matches.
"You mean to tell me not only am I supposed to creat a thriving town for MY people but also play matchmaker as well?" Her grandfather was furious.
"As a matter a fact for show we would like one specific match agreed upon today. Agent Devon Adam's would make a fabulous match for your granddaughter. Now he will need a home office." The woman said with a smirk.
"Fine." Was all Feather could muster. She had added on a room for storage but would move that stuff out tonight and make an office for the man.
Her grandfather dismissed her. She checked the sun's level in the sky. Near supper and she hadn't had time to fish. She grabbed her net and went to the fishing hole she loved. She caught 6 decent sized trout and 3 perch. She gave her grandma the 3 perch for her grandparents dinner. Then she separated 4 trout and then went and gathered wild herbs that grew in huge quantity by the mill site. She
some herbs and the 4 fish to the grocery store to help supply them and to add towards her credit there. She preferred being self sufficient but come winter she might need to shop.
She prepared the remaining fish then put one to smoke in her homemade smoke hut. Then cooked the other one. Cooked to perfection as always. After dinner she took a tarp and placed it outside the door to her cabin. She had some trees she had fell and stacked for firewood for the winter months. She made a quick lean to style building with a tarp roof and placed her storage items in there. The town free pile had a decent used desk and chair she placed in the now bare room. Whatever else was needed he would have to get on his own. Her income was laughable and they mostly lived on a barter system. They had 4 tribe vehicles to be used to transport if needed.
She was dozing in her chair when her grandmother came in with a basket of eggs and homemade bread and cheese. "Your grandfather said those men need picking up tomorrow at Burlington Airport at 8am."
She nodded and her grandma left. How would this man take to living in a 1 room cabin with a office extension.
