Sonia walked up to Mrs Brenda. "You wicked woman!" Sonia exclaimed. "You're the one who has been causing my mother to beg on the streets!" Mrs Brenda looked up, startled, and tried to feign innocence. "Sonia, what are you talking about?" Sonia eyes blazing with anger. "You know what you did, so don't pretend like you don't know. But it's over now. My mother is free from your spell!" Mrs Brenda face turned pale, and she looked away, unable to meet Sonia gaze. "And let me tell you, don't ever try to cast a spell on my mother again. Your charm won't work...mteew!" Sonia said and walked away. Sonia arrived at school late, after the assembly had already ended and lessons had begun. As she entered the school compound, she was immediately stopped by a senior prefect. "Hey, you! Stop right there!" the prefect shouted. "Yes, prefect," Sonia replied, stopping in her tracks. "Why are you coming to school late?" the prefect asked sternly. "My mother couldn't drop me off at school today because she had to go to Lagos to get some shipped clothes, so I had to walk to school."Sonia explained "Even so, couldn't you have woken up early and..."The prefect said Just then, Michael, the head boy, who had been watching from afar, walked up to them. "Godwin, let her off," Michael said. "But she must be punished like other students," Godwin replied. "I know it's your duty to punish latecomers, but just this once, pardon her."Michael pleaded "Alright, go to your class."Godwin said "Okay, prefect," Sonia replied, relieved, and turned to Michael. "Thank you," she said faintly. "You're welcome," Michael answered with a smile. After school dismissed, Michael stood outside Sonia classroom, waiting for her. A few minutes later, Sonia came out of her classroom, and Michael greeted her with a smile. "Hi, Sonia!" But to his surprise, Sonia ignored him and walked away. Michael ran after her. "Sonia, what's wrong? Why are you ignoring me?"he asked Sonia didn't respond, she continued walking. Michael held her hand, trying to stop her. "Sonia, please talk to me." Sonia pulled her hand away. "For what? Why do you want us to talk? Just leave me alone." Michael looked puzzled. "Sonia, what's happening? Did I do something wrong?" Sonia replied coldly, "Nothing is wrong, Michael. Just stay away from me." Sonia walked away, leaving Michael standing on the street, lost in thought, wondering what he had done to make Sonia ignore him. Michael lay on the bed, wondering what could have gone wrong between him and Sonia. He replayed their last few interactions in his mind, trying to figure out what he might have done to upset her. He thought about how he had intervened on her behalf with the senior prefect. He couldn't think of anything he had done to hurt or offend her. As he lay there, he heard his mother calling him. "Michael, come and eat your dinner!" But Michael wasn't hungry. He was too busy trying to figure out what was going on with Sonia. He decided to go to her house and try to talk to her again, to see if he could clear up whatever misunderstanding was between them. He got up from bed and headed out the door, determined to get to the bottom of things. Michael came out of the house and saw Sonia ready to go to her mother supermarket. He rushed to her and asked, "Sonia, where did I offend you?" "Michael, you just have to stay away from me, that's it." Sonia replied and walked away Just then, Mrs Brenda came out of the house. "Eh, eh, ehn..." She seemed to sense Michael distress. "You need to stay away from Sonia, as she told you to," Mrs Brenda said. "But, Mum, Sonia is my friend. I don't understand what's going on."Michael protested Mrs Brenda face turned stern. "Michael, sometimes it's better to respect people boundaries. If Sonia wants space, you should give it to her,and beside I came to tell you that dinner is ready"she said and entered the house Michael looked crestfallen, he didn't know what else to do.
Sonia walked out of her classroom and saw Michael leaning against the door, waiting for her. Michael was her neighbor, friend, and senior in school. She was in SS1, while Michael was in SS3. Every day, he would wait for her after school, and they would walk home together.
"Hi Sonia, let's go home," Michael said.
"Yes," Sonia replied.
As they walked home, they discussed and laughed together.
Mrs Justina (Sonia mother) came out of her apartment and headed to her car. She was about to leave to her supermarket. Then, Mrs Brenda came out of her apartment and poured water on her
"What? Mummy Michael, why did you pour water on me? What did I do wrong to you?" Mrs Justina asked
"You feel too big, so I have to pour water on you," Mrs Brenda shouted.
"Mummy Michael, I can tolerate something else, but you pouring water on me is what I can't tolerate. Look at how you have wet my dress," Mrs Justina said, her clothes dripping with water.
Other neighbors came out of their houses and peeped at the scene. Just then, Michael and Sonia entered the compound and saw their mother exchanging words.
Sonia ran to her mother and asked, "What happened, Mum?"
"Let's go inside," Mrs Justina replied.
Mrs Justina and Sonia entered the house
"But Mum, what Mummy Michael did to you is unfair. How could she just pour water on you?"Sonia asked
"Don't mind her.I am not troublesome like her."Mrs Justina replied
"Yes, Mum, you are kind," Sonia replied.
"Let me go and change into something else," Mrs Justina said and went to her room
Mrs Justina changed into something else, and returned to the sitting room
"Sonia!,Sonia"Mrs Justina called out
Sonia rushed out of her room."Yes, Mum?" She answered.
"I'm leaving for the supermarket now," Mrs Justina said.
"Okay, Mum," Sonia replied.
Mrs Justina headed out the door and left the house.
Meanwhile, Michael confronted his mother about her behavior towards Mrs Justina.
"Mum, what you did to Sonia mother is not right," Michael said.
"What are you talking about? She is feeling too big because she is rich. She needs to be taught a lesson."Mrs Brenda replied.
"But Mum, I don't see Sonia mother as a proud woman,She is always been kind.."Michael said
"Shut up, you're just a teenager and you don't know anything at all." Mrs Brenda snapped, silencing Michael.
Michael shook his head and walked away to his room
Mrs Justina arrived at her supermarket and parked her car in the garage. She got out and walked into the store. She was greeted by her workers. "Good afternoon, ma," they greeted in unison.
"How are you all doing"Mrs Justina asked
"We are all doing great ma"they answered in unison
"How much did we sell today?"Mrs Justina asked one of the workers
"45,000naira, ma."The worker replied
"That's great! Let me see the book,"Mrs Justina said,
"Alright ma" the worker replied and handed her a notebook detailing the day sales.
Mrs Justina sat down on a plastic chair and scan the notebook
In the night, Michael lay on a bench outside the house, lost in thought.
"My mum had no right to pour water on Sonia mother. It's not fair.I need to apologize to Sonia mother."he said to himself
Mrs Brenda lay on the bed in her room, gazing at the ceiling fan while deep in thought.
"Justina has a supermarket and she is living well, while I'm struggling to make ends meet. And to make matters worse, she id living in a one-bedroom apartment, while I'm stuck in this small room house.I need to find a way to bring her down, I will go to a native doctor and get a charm to make her beg and let people mock at her."Mrs Brenda thought to herself.
With a wicked grin spreading across her face, She drifted off to sleep, plotting her next move.
The following morning which was Saturday. Mrs Brenda got dressed, she went to the kitchen to have breakfast. Michael was already in the kitchen, munching on custard and bread.
"Good morning, Mum," Michael greeted, looking up from his bowl.
"Good morning, dear," Mrs Brenda replied, pouring hot water into a cup.
"I'm traveling this morning, so I want you to take care of the house"Mrs Brenda said
"Okay, Mum,Where are you going?"Michael asked
"I'm going to visit my sister.I'll be back in the evening,."Mrs Brenda replied
"Okay, Mum,Have a safe trip."Michael said.
"Thank you,And don't forget to lock the door and don't let anyone in."Mrs Brenda cautioned
"I will, Mum," Michael replied.
After breakfast, Mrs Brenda left the house.

Alex's moment of solitude was brief, as the sound of footsteps on the gravel path shattered the tranquil ambiance. She turned to see a young man, likely a member of the catering team, approaching the pond with a quiet confidence. His eyes met hers, and for a brief, shining moment, they shared a deep connection, a spark of understanding that transcended words. "Forgive the interruption," he said, his voice low and soothing. "I needed a respite from the tumult inside." Alex smiled, sensing a kindred spirit, a fellow traveler in the midst of life's chaos. "I know precisely what you mean," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. As they stood there, the night air seemed to vibrate with an unspoken empathy, a sense of mutual understanding that went beyond words. The man's name was Ryan, a part-time server and full-time art student, with a passion for creativity and a desire to make a meaningful impact. Their conversation flowed effortlessly, like a gentle brook meandering through the gardens, twisting and turning through topics and ideas. Ryan's ardor for art and his dreams of creating something truly remarkable resonated deeply with Alex, striking a chord within her very soul. She found herself opening up about her own creative aspirations, long suppressed by the demands of her social standing and the expectations of those around her. As the night wore on, the party lights began to fade, and the gardens grew quieter, the only sound the soft rustling of leaves and the distant hum of crickets. Ryan and Alex reluctantly parted ways, exchanging a warm, gentle smile and a promise to meet again, to continue their conversation and explore the connection they had discovered. Little did Alex know, this chance encounter would awaken a spark within her, igniting a journey of self-discovery and transformation, a path that would lead her to question everything she thought she knew about herself and her place in the world. Ryan, too, felt a sense of wonder, a sense of possibility, as he walked away from the pond, feeling the weight of their encounter settling upon him like a gentle benediction.
