Chapter 1
Ten minutes. That's how long it had taken me to get dressed. I used to at least try my best to look put together for balls and parties, but the last time I had tried, I almost died from being suffocated by a freaking belt and a broken heart.
My body was fine the way it was. But I was the only one who thought so.
For my entire eighteen years of living, I had been called all sort of names due to my portly figure. At first, it had hurt especially when my parents thought so too. But then Charles had come along, making me feel loved and then like a demon, he totally destroyed me.
"You think I'd love someone like this? Are you blind?" His tone dripped with disgust as looked me over from head to toe. He had never talked to me like that. He was always gentle and caring but....
I had stood in front of him drenched in champagne. A girl, my own best friend, Alice, had hung by his shoulder smirking at me with mockery and malice. The crowd had jeered at me, watching the show play on with their phones on record.
"Ch..charles what are you saying? You..you love me." I insisted. I must have looked so pitiable and stupid as I clung tightly to the delusion that he loved me. As if to break whatever imagination I had, he grabbed the Alice hanging close by and soon they were locked in a passionate kiss.
My heart had shattered into a thousand pieces when he had later announced that it was all nothing but a dare. His friends had dared him to date the school's fatty, and he did. And I had fallen stupidly for him.
Now I stared back at my chubby reflection in the mirror. My pinkish high bone cheeks were left bare without any makeup. The least I could do to curb my unruly red hair was to pack it up into a manageable knot. I wasn't out to impress anyone. I was used to what people had to say about me. Goddess knows if I had my way, I'd be stuck in my room forever curled up against a heart wrenching one sided love novel.
Tonight was the night of the full moon and as the daughter of Pack's third in command, the Gamma, I had no excuse not to attend.
Preparing to leave the room, I glanced one more time at the mirror and winced. I looked like something that came out from the kitchen. Certainly not delicious food. Maybe a little bit of makeup won't be bad.
I fixed my eyes with eyeliners, making my emerald green eyes pop. It was the only thing with colour on my dark dress, and yes, I almost forgot, my red hair, another source of my bullying.
"Finally Jaz! Where the hell have you been?" My second best friend, Dylan, called out my name the moment I stepped foot in the party. He was the only one who called me by the name Jaz and had never once judged me. Many had gone against our friendship especially since they thought the fatty was just leeching off the Beta's son, but he stayed, even after Alice's betrayal.
"Young lady! Why the hell are you dressed like that?" He yelled dramatically, before rolling his eyes. "Come on. We've gotta go quickly." Without waiting for an answer to his first question, he pulled my hand and dragged me towards the door, ignoring the questioning looks thrown his way.
"Um, can you tell me where you're taking me exactly?" I asked looking confused.
"To the place where the grass is greener." He whispered conspiratorially, before winking. I still looked as confused as ever and he groaned in frustration.
"To the Alpha's party, dimwit."
"The Alpha's party?" I repeated, my mouth slowly opening and closing before I finally said. "But we've got to be here, I mean the Beta and Gamma's children.."
"Hold it there young lady." He cut me off with a growl. "A party should have some booze and string music, and all I see here is boring oldies drinking champagne. You're coming with me. You need to clear your head."
And with that, he practically flung me out the hall.
When we stood at the entrance of the other party, I could feel my lips spreading into a smile for the first time in a long time. This was what I needed, some music and alcohol.
I could feel the bass of the music thrumming through my veins, making me want to dance. It was everything I wanted in a party.
I was getting ready to loosen up and reached out for a glass as a waiter strolled by with a tray of drinks. Dylan shouted in my ear above the loud music
"Be careful Jaz, and have some fun while I go have mine." Then he winked and off he went.
I found my way to the bar and sat on one of the high stools, kicking off my heels and letting my curls tumble down my shoulders. I was beginning to feel at home here. I only felt tipsy after a few sips so I could tell someone was watching me.
My body tingled with apprehension and I couldn't tell if it was me or the alcohol. Glancing around, my head feeling groggy, I nearly chocked on my drink as I found two blue orbs shining in the dark. What the hell was that? It had been watching me for a while now.
Just as I was wondering, the blue orbs moved. They were eyes. The eyes of a man. My heart thudded crazily in my chest. Just when I was starting to loosen up here...
He stood up slowly and emerged from the darkness. What did I do wrong? Was he going to beat me up for staring at him or something? Oh goddess help me.
I gulped down my drink and stood up shakily at least to match his height when he came forward. But I unwillingly let out a gasp when his figure emerged from the darkness, muscles and all, towering over me.
His scent hits me as he approached me and I backed away towards the bar, calling out crazily in my head through the pack link for Dylan to come save me. Just then as if hearing my thoughts, the strange man's face broke into a smirk and quickened his steps, hurrying towards me. There was no space to run away.
I'm gonna die.
This was my last thought and he lurched at me.
