Chapter 1 Betrayal

Clank!

PAK!

The bowl of soup in Mira's hands was flipped over, accompanied by the hard slap sent across her face.

Her mother-in-law glared at her, then she grabbed Mira by her hair. "I am not going to ask again. Where did you hide my jewelry!?"

The living room echoed with the woman's angry voice, deafening Mira's ears.

Just another night of preparing the perfect meal, cleaning the house, and fervently hoping and praying that her husband returned early. What she didn't expect was that she would find her mother-in-law at the door instead of her husband.

And the woman asked about some jewelry which Mira knew nothing about.

"Interrogate her well, Mum. I swear she was the one that took it!" Her husband's sister, who was standing in a corner, screamed.

"Mirabel, bring out my jewelry! If you don't bring it out now, the cops are on their way and they'll make you do that."

Already used to her mother-in-law's harsh treatment, Mira sighed and she tried to coax the woman.

"Mum, please calm down. I didn't take any jewelry-"

*PAK*

The woman gave her another slap.

"Didn't you ransack my room yesterday when I told you to come and clean it!? You filthy child, I should have been cautious not to allow you enter my bedroom."

Yesterday, the woman had summoned Mira to the family house to clean the place. And her jewelry went missing yesterday. If it wasn't Mira, who else would steal it?

Her daughter also admitted to seeing Mira taking it.

She didn't like her daughter-in-law in the first place, and the woman was waiting for opportunities like this one to get rid of her.

"Bring out the jewelry now!" She yelled. "I give you two seconds!"

Mira's heart pounded as she tried to avoid another attack from the woman.

Suddenly, her phone which was sitting on the couch beeped and the screen lit up.

Mira felt hopeful, thinking it was her husband calling. But she saw a text message from a stranger.

"What is this?" The woman snatched the phone before Mira could read the message.

"Aha!" She exclaimed after seeing the message. "Mirabel, you ungrateful bitch. You have even sold the jewelry already."

It was an alert message from a jewelry buyer, accompanied by the transaction statement.

Mira stared at the alert message of two million, her eyes widening in shock.

At that moment, her husband returned and witnessed the whole scene.

"What did you do this time, Mira?" Was the first question he asked.

"I- I didn't steal it." Mira shook her head, also controlling the tears that threatened to fall.

She didn't even know the person who sent her the money. 'H-How?'

"You're still denying it, aren't you!?" Another slap from her mother-in-law broke her out of her thoughts. "The cops are on their way, and I'll make sure they teach you a great lesson."

"Mira, I am very disappointed in you. Why did you steal Mum's jewelry?" Henry gave her a hard look.

Mira shook her head, unable to control her tears anymore. "You know I can't steal her jewelry."

"I don't believe you!"

Her heart broke into a thousand pieces as the man said the harshest words she'd ever heard.

Thinking that she would be able to save their marriage, Mira didn't stop hoping that her husband would return to the nice man he was in the past.

Henry didn't even blink when the cops arrived and took her away.

Several minutes later, the hard metal doors of the prison's cell were shut on her face.

"Haha, another stupid sinner! What did you do, beautiful girl?"

Strange-looking women, who looked more like men, surrounded her. It was as if they had been waiting for her arrival.

Unknowingly to Mira, someone had already bribed them to beat her up the moment she was brought to the cell.

"I heard you stole some jewelry. How much did it cost?"

"Girls like you are homewreckers. What gave you the guts to offend your mother-in-law?"

Apprehension filled her heart and she looked outside the cell, hoping someone would come.

Mira hoped more than anything that her husband would arrive and bail her out.

"Cat got your tongue?" One of the scary women grinned evilly. "There's no place to run to, Kitty. We deal with little criminals like you."

The pain from her mother-in-law's slaps hadn't healed yet and Mira was forced to undergo more pain.

The women especially targeted her stomach. As much as she tried to protect her baby from their attack, her effort was futile.

"Damnit! She's bleeding!" Someone yelled in the background as Mira slowly lost consciousness.

The metal doors flung open and she could feel someone carrying her. Then she passed out...

At The Hospital...

The beeping sounds of machines sounded in her ears.

Mira opened her eyes, and what first greeted her was the sharp pain in her stomach.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't save the child. Three months' pregnancy has gone to waste."

It was the Doctor speaking with her husband, and fear gripped Mira's heart.

'W-What are they talking about? Is it my baby?'

Her hand trembled as she touched her stomach. The pain got sharper, and her heart sank.

Henry's expression was blank after the Doctor said that. He didn't show any reaction and the Doctor left, looking confused.

He walked towards the bed and stared at Mira whose eyes were welled up with tears.

Still digesting the news that she had lost her baby, Mira was unable to say anything.

But what Henry said next completely shattered her heart.

"How I wish you both died instead."

His words were like thunderclaps. Mira's lips parted and she gasped.

"H-Henry..."

Suddenly, the bathroom door opened and a slender lady stepped out.

Mira didn't know that her best friend was in the ward with them.

However, Sia did not glance at her and she went and stood beside Henry, curling her hands around his arm.

"It was my mistake, Honey. I should have told those women to hit both her head and stomach. That would have killed her."

'Wait... what?'

Mira stared at her best friend through her blurry vision, and she wanted to believe her ears were playing tricks on her.

What did she mean by those women?

And did she just call Henry Honey?

Sia's eyes fell on Mira, and she nodded, smiling. "Yeah, you heard me right. I bribed those women to beat you up. And oh, I also took the jewelry and transferred that money into your account."

"Y-You." Mira was once again speechless. Then she shook her head in disbelief. "Y-You know I can't handle a joke at this moment. Stop trying to play pranks on me, Sia."

"Who told you I'm joking? Are you too dumb to understand simple words now, Mira?"

"Henry, please tell her to stop." Mira looked towards the man, begging with her eyes. "I- I know she's joking."

"She is not." Henry glared at her. "Sia is the only woman I love. I don't love you, Mira. I never did."

"Huh?"

"Of what benefit will you be to me? You lost your family's favor, even trash is better than you. Do you think I am a fool to keep you as my wife?"

"S-Stop it, Henry." Mira's tears fell rapidly. "Please stop it. You're both joking."

She tried to cover her ears, but the man grabbed her hands.

"Do you know for how long we have been waiting for this moment, to get rid of you?" he said. "You are a hindrance to our relationship, and once the whole world hears the news of your death, Sia and I can finally announce our relationship to the public."

"Unlike you, Sia is smarter and independent. She is a star and you are nothing. Once you're dead, Mira, we can finally be together."

"Stop it!" The man was holding her tightly and Mira felt as if her heart would rip out.

"H-How could you do this to me, Henry? What did I do wrong?"

"If you hadn't lost your family's favor, I would be richer! But none of them is willing to take you back!" He snapped. "Now, even if I kill you and dump you on the street, no one will care."

"Please stop..." From the corners of her eyes, Mira could see Sia bringing out a syringe.

She filled it up with some strange-looking liquid, and while Henry pinned her down, Sia extricated the liquid into the IV fluid bag connected to Mira's vein.

Suddenly, her blood froze then her body began burning up inside.

The pain was too unbearable, and Mira thrashed and struggled.

Henry and Sia towered in front of her with triumphant smiles on their faces.

"Yes, die." Sia chuckled. "This poison is very fatal, Mira. You will never survive."

Mira's limbs lost their strength and the realization of their betrayal hit her hard.

Fresh tears left her eyes and she glared at them. "You will never get away with this."

"Oh, we already did." Sia smiled sweetly. "There's nothing you can do, and no one will save you. Bye-bye, Bestie."

Sia waved at her, and Mira could see her life flashing before her eyes.

Sia was right. There was nothing she could do.

For Sia, Mira left her stardom for her best friend to shine.

For Henry, she went against her family, leading them to disown her.

She did everything for their happiness. Henry's love was everything she ever longed for.

Unfortunately, his love was just a game. He was just using her. He was only after what she could offer.

Life was cruel and she was the biggest fool.

If only she had seen their true colors earlier.

If only she could correct her silly mistakes.
