"Rory, I'm telling you, it's a scam." My best friend Luna regarded the letter in my hand with suspicion and muttered, "Don't try opening it."
At our preferred coffee shop, we had been enjoying lattes and catching up on one other's lives. The letter I had just received in the mail early that day made me both anxious and interested.
"Luna, it's not a scam. It comes from an Eastern European law firm. I turned the letter over in my hand and stated, "They say I've inherit a property from a faraway relative."
Luna raised an eyebrow. "A distant relative? You mean like a great-aunt or something?"
I tilted my head. "No, it states here that it came from a great-great-grandmother I've never before known of."
Luna's eyes got bigger. "Whoa, that's strange. "What property is it?"
I paused as a chill went through me. "A castle in the mountains of Eastern Europe."
Luna's eyes sparkled with excitement. "That sounds amazing! You have to go check it out."
"I nodded with a feeling of unease. "I understand. I simply feel strange about this.
Luna touched my arm with her outstretched hand. "You constantly talk about how you feel like your life is lacking something, Rory. This might be it. Perhaps you've been preparing for this trip.
I grinned as my resolve grew stronger. "You're correct. I will. I'll go see what's happening in the mansion."
Luna smiled. "That's the essence! Let's get another latte to celebrate now.
I couldn't get rid of the notion that my life was going to alter in a manner I couldn't even fathom as we clicked our glasses together.
As I organised my trip to Eastern Europe, the remainder of the day flew by. I spent that evening packing and doing research on the location before reserving a trip for the following day.
That night, as I laid in bed, I was unable to avoid feeling both anxious and excited. At the mansion, what would I discover? Who was this great-great-grandmother that I had never heard of?
As I dozed off, I had a strange sensation that someone was watching me. My chamber was hauntingly lit by the moon as I opened my eyes.
Then I caught sight of it. There was a shadowy person observing me.
My heart was racing when I froze. Who was it? And what were they looking for?
I lay there frozen in terror as the person slowly started to approach me.
Then everything turned black.
As I laid there I kept getting the feeling that something was wrong. In addition to feeling nauseous, the environment seemed to be spinning. A sharp ache shot through my brain, forcing me to lie down again after trying to sit up.
Suddenly, a small whisper sounded in my ear. "Rory, stay away from the mansion. It isn't safe.
There was no one there, so I looked to see if somebody was speaking to me. After the whispers stopped, there was an eerie quiet.
My alarm was blaring in my ear when I woke up the next minute, so I must have fallen asleep. I massaged my eyes and sat up in bed after sleepily reaching out to turn it off.
"I told myself it was just my imagination." But the murmuring was still audible, and I felt uneasy.
I got out of bed and threw away the covers in an attempt to get rid of the discomfort. Since I had a full day planned, I needed to concentrate on preparing for my journey.
A single piece of paper was on the counter as I was heading to the the kitchen to make coffee. In the writing I didn't recognise, there was a note.
Don't go to the mansion, Rory. That isn't safe. -E "Or see me at the airport. instead."
An icy feeling ran through me as I reread the note. And who was E and how they learnt about my trip? How significant was "it's not safe?" to them?
The note was crumpled, and I threw it in the trash, trying to ignore the unease. I was on my way to the mansion anyway.
I got myself a cup of coffee and sat down at the table, but I still felt uneasy. I was also interested in E's identity and what they wanted to gain from me..
I was enjoying my coffee as I sat there looking out the window when I experienced an odd feeling.
It felt like I was being drawn in the direction of something that was in the Eastern European mountains, waiting for me.
Then, as suddenly as it had started, the sensation stopped. I just sat there, a little uneasy and totally confused.
But one thing was certain: no matter what, I was headed to the mansion. Its walls hold secrets that I wanted to discover.
I finished my coffee, got up, and began getting ready for my trip. I gathered my belongings and verified my passport before departing.
The airport was bustling with bustle as I walked to the check-in desk. After presenting my boarding pass and photo ID, I proceeded to the airport checking queue.
I experienced a mixture of anxiety and exhilaration as I waited in queue. What did the mansion have in store for me? And who was the mysterious person who wrote me the note, E?
After going through security, I made my way to the gate. I felt a sense of comfort as soon as I stepped into the plane.
At last, I was leaving. It was a long and tiring ride, but I was too excited to sleep. I read a book, watched flicks and looked out of the window at the sky below.
I was excited when the plane finally started to descend. At last I was approaching my destination.
The moment the jet touched down on the runway, I was relieved. I'd done it. With my baggage in hand, I made my way to the departure lounge's exit.
I was filled with wonder as I first stepped outside into the crisp, cold air. The mountains themselves towered over me, fog shrouding their heights.
I was hearing birds singing in the distance, and the air was fresh and energising. I took a big breath, feeling both anxious and excited.
At last, I had reached the Eastern European mountains. I was ready to learn the secrets that lay beyond the mysterious mansion's walls.
