The Blood Legacy: A young woman inherits a vast fortune from her estranged father, only to discover that she is also heir to a vampire bloodline. Thrust into a world of ancient clans and supernatural powers, she finds herself under the protection of a powerful vampire lord, a billionaire with a troubled past and a burning desire for her.

Chapter 1 One

The summons arrived on a Tuesday, nestled amongst a pile of overdue bills and rejection letters from local galleries. Seraphina – Sera, as she preferred – almost tossed it aside, assuming it was another debt collector hounding her for the past-due electricity bill. But the crisp, heavy paper and the embossed logo of "Blackwood & Thorne, Attorneys at Law" caught her eye. A knot of unease tightened in her stomach.

Sera tore open the envelope, her fingers smudged with charcoal from the unfinished portrait propped against her easel. The formal language swam before her eyes: "deceased...estate...executor...inheritance." Her heart pounded against her ribs. Her father. She hadn't seen him, hadn't spoken to him, in over a decade. He'd been a ghost in her life, a faded photograph tucked away in the back of a drawer.

The letter instructed her to appear at the Blackwood & Thorne offices the following Friday at 2 PM. A wave of dizziness washed over her. She sank into the worn armchair in her cramped studio apartment, the letter clutched in her trembling hand. The studio, barely larger than a walk-in closet, was a testament to her struggling career. Canvases leaned against every wall, tubes of paint were scattered across a rickety table, and the air was thick with the scent of turpentine.

Friday arrived with a dreary, persistent drizzle. Sera, dressed in her only presentable outfit – a simple black dress she'd salvaged from a thrift store – navigated the crowded city streets, her anxiety growing with each step. The Blackwood & Thorne building was an imposing structure of grey granite and dark glass, a stark contrast to the vibrant, graffiti-covered buildings of her own neighborhood.

Inside, the reception area was hushed and opulent, with polished marble floors, dark wood paneling, and a large, abstract painting that Sera couldn't help but scrutinize. A stern-faced receptionist with impeccably styled grey hair directed her to the tenth floor.

The office of Mr. Alistair Thorne was spacious and filled with antique furniture. Sunlight streamed through a large window, offering a panoramic view of the city skyline. Mr. Thorne, a tall, impeccably dressed man with silver hair and piercing blue eyes, rose from behind his massive mahogany desk as Sera entered.

"Ms. Seraphina Moreau?" he inquired, his voice deep and resonant.

"Yes," Sera managed, her voice barely a whisper.

He gestured to a leather chair opposite his desk. "Please, have a seat."

The next hour was a blur of legal jargon and somber pronouncements. Mr. Thorne explained that her father, Julian Moreau, had passed away unexpectedly a few weeks prior. He'd been a successful businessman, apparently, something Sera hadn't known. Their relationship had been fractured beyond repair after her mother's death when Sera was just sixteen. Her father, consumed by grief, had retreated into himself, eventually pushing Sera away.

Mr. Thorne presented her with the details of the will. Her father had left her a substantial inheritance: a considerable sum of money, a small apartment in a more affluent part of the city, and a collection of antique books. Sera was stunned. She'd always struggled financially, barely scraping by with her art. This inheritance was life-changing.

"There is, however," Mr. Thorne continued, his voice taking on a more serious tone, "a secondary inheritance."

Sera blinked, confused. "A secondary inheritance?"

"Yes," Mr. Thorne said, his gaze fixed on her. "Your father's will stipulates that in addition to these material possessions, he has bequeathed you something... beyond material wealth." He paused, as if choosing his words carefully. "He refers to it as 'the legacy.'"

Sera frowned. "The legacy? What does that mean?"

Mr. Thorne steepled his fingers. "I'm afraid I can't say for certain. The will is...unusually worded in this regard. It speaks of a responsibility, a continuation of something your father held dear. He mentions a 'gift,' a 'burden,' and a 'truth.' These terms are, of course, open to interpretation."

A shiver ran down Sera's spine. This was starting to sound less like a legal matter and more like something out of a gothic novel.

"He left a separate letter for you," Mr. Thorne said, reaching into a drawer and producing a sealed envelope. It was made of thick, cream-colored paper, and her name was written on it in a familiar, elegant script – her father's.

Sera's hand trembled as she took the envelope. She felt a strange mixture of curiosity and dread.

"I understand this is a lot to take in, Ms. Moreau," Mr. Thorne said, his voice softening slightly. "I've arranged for the transfer of the funds and the transfer of the properties to begin immediately. You can contact my office at any time if you have any questions."

Sera nodded mutely, her eyes still fixed on the letter in her hand.

"There's one more thing," Mr. Thorne added as she turned to leave. "Your father left specific instructions that this secondary inheritance, this 'legacy,' is not to be discussed with anyone outside of yourself. He stressed the importance of discretion."

Sera's unease deepened. What had her father been involved in? What was this mysterious legacy he had left her?

Back in her cramped studio, Sera sat at her paint-splattered table, the letter from her father lying before her. The weight of it felt immense, as if it held not just words, but a piece of her father's soul, a piece of a past she'd never known.

She took a deep breath and carefully broke the seal. Inside, a single sheet of paper was folded in thirds. Her father's familiar handwriting filled the page, the ink slightly faded but still legible.

"My dearest Seraphina," the letter began. "If you are reading this, then I am gone. I regret that we were estranged for so long. There are things I should have told you, things I should have shared. But time, as it often does, slipped through my fingers. I have left you a material inheritance, yes, but that is merely a vessel. The true inheritance, the legacy, is something much more profound. It is a truth, a gift, and a burden that has been passed down through our family for generations. It is a part of you, Seraphina, as much as it is a part of me.

"The truth is...," the letter continued, but the rest of the sentence was obscured by a dark blot of ink, as if someone had deliberately tried to smudge it. Sera's heart pounded. She tried to decipher the obscured words, but they were illegible.

The letter continued, "This truth is protected by a gift, one that will reveal itself to you in time. But be warned, this gift also carries a burden, a responsibility that you must bear with courage and wisdom. Seek the answers within yourself, Seraphina. Trust your instincts. And remember, the truth is always there, waiting to be uncovered."

The letter ended abruptly, with no closing salutation or signature. Sera stared at the page, her mind reeling. What truth? What gift? What burden? And what was hidden beneath that dark blot of ink?
