BLURB:I never imagined that everything might change in a single night. However, I didn't anticipate that Alexander Stone, the mysterious millionaire with the wicked grin, would be the one to haunt both my life and my dreams. We intended for our night together to be a one-time event, a little getaway. I never would have thought that it would result in a secret that would haunt me for five years. My life now involves striking a cautious balance between parenting my daughter, Mia, by myself and apart from a guy who is unaware that he is a father. But I have to deal with him once again once his business purchases my art gallery. All of the memories from that evening flood back as our eyes contact, along with the unmistakable chemistry. I can feel him getting beyond my barriers as he gets closer, but I can't tell him the truth. Not right now. Not when everything I've fought so hard to achieve is in jeopardy. However, when Alexander gives me that resolute look, I understand that I may not be able to maintain my secret for very long. Then he asks me the one thing I'm afraid to respond to: Lena, what happened to you and me? If I told him the truth, would I lose him forever? Or is this my second-our second-chance at a love that can destroy all I've worked so hard to keep safe?

Chapter 1 The Gala

Chapter 1: The Gala

"Is tonight special, or why do you always appear bored at these events?"

Lena saw a guy standing next to her as she looked up from her unfinished glass of champagne. He stood out from the other males in the room, who were all wearing fitted suits and forced grins. His voice was silky yet tinged with something wild, and his presence was captivating.

Despite herself, she cocked her head in curiosity. "And do you always speak so confidently to strangers?"

A slack grin twisted his lips. "Just the ones that are interesting."

Lena's eyebrow went up. "You're not even familiar with me."

"Not yet," he answered, taking a step forward while maintaining eye contact with her. "However, I'm open to learning."

She allowed her lips to be teased by the bubbles as she drank her champagne. It's a daring assumption. What happens if I'm not worth the hassle?

"I'll wager my luck."

Something about the way he gazed at her made it seem as if he could see right through her expensive gown and flawless makeup to the side of her that she concealed. She would never acknowledge it, but it caused her heart to race.

She placed her drink on an adjacent table and said, "I don't even know your name."

He held out his hand and said, "Alexander."

After a moment of hesitation, she put her hand in his. "Lena."

As soon as their skin touched, the room seemed to fade, the sound of glasses clinking and talk drifting into the distance. Even if she wanted to, she couldn't break free from his solid hold and the warmth of his hand against hers.

He gently stroked her knuckles with his thumb and murmured, "You don't belong here."

She scowled. "Pardon me?"

"These people pretend to care about causes and each other, but it's all a façade," he said, gesturing gently to the group of individuals behind them. You-you are unique.

Startled by his comment, Lena blinked. "And you deduced everything from a single handshake?"

His smile reappeared, but this time it was gentler, almost kind. "As I mentioned, I'm open to learning."

It was the intensity of his stare, not the chilly air conditioning, that sent a chill down her spine. She couldn't recall the last time she had been given that kind of stare, as if she were the only person in the room.

His voice was low and seductive as he abruptly stated, "Dance with me."

She paused, looking around the packed dance floor. "I don't believe-"

He took her hand once more and interrupted, saying, "Don't think." "Just sense it."

He brought her to the middle of the room before she could object. Alexander put his hands on her waist and drew her in as the music changed to a slow, sensual beat.

With her heart pounding in her chest, Lena put her hands on his shoulders. "You're aggressive, aren't you?"

He laughed, the sound bouncing off her. "Life is too short to hold out for approval."

The distance between them appeared to vanish as they danced in time with the music. His aroma was enticing, and his touch was tender yet possessive. Through the thin material of her dress, she could feel the heat of his body, and every time he touched her, sparks flew over her skin.

Her voice could hardly be heard above the music as she said, "I don't do this."

With his lips near her ear, he questioned, "Do what?"

"Get strangers to sweep me off my feet."

She was drawn even closer as Alexander's hand moved up her back. "Let me be the exception, then."

His lips touched her temple, causing her breath to catch, and the little contact set off an uncontrollable reaction inside of her. It would have been wise for her to leave the event and return to her corner. However, she didn't.

"What gives me the impression that you're trouble?" Her voice was shaking as she asked.

With his hand moving down to the small of her back, he answered simply, "Because I am." "But you enjoy it."

When her body was betraying her by leaning toward him rather than separating from him, she was unable to protest. Only the two of them and the charged air between them remained as the world beyond their little bubble vanished.

With a menacing promise in his voice, he said, "Come with me."

Her gaze expanded. "Where?"

He pressed his lips to her ear and muttered, "Somewhere quieter." "A place where we can be by ourselves."

Lena ought should have declined. She ought to have left. However, his allure was too great and too compelling.

He walked her out of the great ballroom via a side door and down a dimly lighted hallway without saying another word. Behind them, the sound of their footsteps and her labored breathing took the place of the party's distant murmur.

She didn't stop him, but she did say, "This is crazy."

"Good crazy or bad crazy?" he questioned, giving her a playful grin in return.

She nibbled on her lip. "I haven't made up my mind yet."

He turned to her and stopped suddenly. His thumb brushed her cheek as his hands cradled her face. "I'll help you make a decision."

His lips found hers in a breath-stealing kiss before she could react. His lips moved against hers with a confidence that made her feel lightheaded, demanding but compassionate.

Feeling the firm planes of muscle under his suit, her hands moved to his chest. She couldn't get enough of him because he tasted like danger and champagne.

His voice was raspy with want as he said, "Lena," against her lips.

Instead of responding, she drew him in closer. Every nerve ending in her body was alive and begging for more as it burned.

His fingers curled over her hips as his hands moved down her sides. His lips never left hers as he shoved her up against the wall. Their surroundings were hazy, and all that mattered was how he made her feel-free, wild, and alive.

His mouth moved down her neck as he spoke the words, "You're addictive."

With her fingers tangled in his hair, she said, "And you're impossible."

His chuckle vibrated across her flesh, low and naughty. "But don't you like that?"

Before she could reply, they were brought back to the present by the sound of footsteps echoing down the hallway.

Alexander's forehead pressed against hers as he gently withdrew. His eyes were black with whispered promises, and his breathing was labored.

With a tone of enjoyment, he said, "Looks like we've been found out."

With her pulse-pounding, Lena looked toward the end of the hall. She didn't want to let go of the intensity and heat they had shared, nor did she want this moment to end.

He repeated, "Come with me," in a gentler, almost beseeching tone.

She paused, caught between reason and his attraction. However, a crisp, authoritative voice cried out before she could make up her mind.

"Alexander."

Both of them turned to see a guy coming toward them, his face inscrutable and icy.

"Who is that?" With a sinking heart, Lena asked.

Alexander's eyes remained fixed on the guy while his jaw tensed. "There is no one to be concerned about."

For the first time that evening, Lena had a glimmer of uncertainty, but the strain in his voice told her differently.

The guy repeated, "Alexander," in a foreboding tone.

Alexander took a step back while continuing to touch Lena's arm. His eyes met hers as he said, "I'll find you."

She was left alone in the dim hallway with more questions than answers when he turned and approached the guy before she could reply.
