Chapter 1 Sophia's Pov

As I excitedly walked towards the entrance of Waldorf Astor's grand ballroom, there was no way I could know that my life was about to change forever.

After a crazy business trip, this weekend was supposed to be a perfect weekend-it was my younger sister's wedding and of course, a reunion with my family and my husband, Liam. This was exactly what I had been looking forward to for days-In Fact, I had counted down the days, pictured us dancing together and laughing with Charlotte as we celebrated her big day. I couldn't wait.

But the moment I entered and looked at the altar where the couple stood, my world turned upside down.

I saw him first.

Liam Donovan. My Liam. In a tailored tuxedo and looking every bit the picture of a perfect and handsome groom.

My heart stopped as the giddy anticipation I'd carried all week twisted into a sharp and paralyzing ache inside me as I wondered what the hell was going on in front of me.

My gaze darted to the bride. I could see the white lace, the veil and the soft blonde curls and knew it framed the face of my sister. She was smiling radiantly at Liam.

My throat tightened as I watched her slip her hand into that of Liam's as her vows poured from her lips as if it was the most magical thing ever.

The room blurred in front of me. The clinking of glasses and the scattered whispers of guests in the ballroom all faded into the background as one truth burned itself into my mind.

My husband was marrying my sister.

As the truth echoed again and again in my head, I didn't scream. I didn't faint either. I just stood there, frozen, as the voices of the couple I had trusted the most in the world joined together as if in an unholy symphony.

For better or worse. The words rang in my ears and sounded a mockery of the promises Liam and I had made six years ago.

I wanted someone...anyone to pinch me so I could wake up from this nightmare that I was having.

It had to be a nightmare, right?

When the officiant pronounced them husband and wife, I forced my eyes shut. I couldn't watch the kiss.

The rest of the ceremony passed in a haze. I felt like a ghost as I drifted through the reception unnoticed. No one seemed to wonder why the sister of the bride wasn't offering hugs or congratulations.

Not even my mother.

It wasn't until I saw them at the head table, Liam leaning close to whisper something in Charlotte's ear and his hand brushing her stomach that the ice inside me finally broke and I was out for blood.

I marched toward them just as I screamed like a crazy woman. "So this is what loyalty looks like in this family, uh?"

The room fell silent as all eyes turned toward me. Charlotte's face drained of color but Liam didn't even flinch. His calm and detached expression only fueled my anger.

"Sophia..." he started, his tone sounding far too calm for the chaos he'd created.

"Don't you dare 'Sophia' me," I hissed even as my hands trembled by my side. "What the hell is this? What the hell have you done? How dare you, Liam?"

Charlotte stood up as her fingers twisted nervously in front of her gown. "Sophia, please... I didn't mean for you to find out like this."

I turned to look at her, shocked that she would sound so ridiculous right now. "Oh, how thoughtful of you," I snapped as my voice rose so high I wouldn't be shocked if it carried beyond the hall. "You didn't mean for me to find out at my own sister's wedding that my husband is the groom? Were you planning to tell me at Christmas or were you hoping I'd just never notice?"

Her lip quivered but she didn't respond. Instead, Eleanor, my mother, stepped forward from the row of seats that had been kept for relatives to intervene. She was wearing a calm face as if one of her daughters had not just gotten married to the husband of another of her daughters. Her expression baffled the hell out of me.

"Sophia, that's enough," She said to me in a cold voice. "This is a family matter. We don't need a scene here."

"A scene?!" I laughed bitterly even as the tears threatened to fall down my cheeks. "I just found out my husband married my sister and you're fucking worried about appearances?"

My mother's gaze hardened as she looked around her as some of the guests gasped. "Language, Charlotte. This is exactly why you couldn't be the perfect wife to Liam. You were never going to give him what he needed. The family needs an heir and Charlotte... Charlotte can provide that."

The words hit me like a punch to the gut as I tried to wrap my head around them. "An heir," I echoed in a hollow voice as I looked at the sister I had loved all my life and the man I had loved for a long time.

"That's what this is about? My inability to have children makes me disposable? Really?"

Eleanor didn't flinch at my words. "It's not personal, Sophia. It's business."

I turned to Liam, desperate for some hint of regret, some flicker of the man I thought I knew...the man that I loved. But all I saw was cold detachment as he reached into his jacket and pulled out a white envelope.

"You'll find everything in order," he said as he slided the envelope across the table. "Sign them, Sophia. There's no point dragging this out."

My hands trembled as I snatched the envelope and ripped it open.

They were divorce papers. The ink on it smeared as my tears dripped onto the page.

"This isn't happening," I muttered as I shook my head. "This can't be real."

"It is," Liam said coldly. "Sign the papers and move on."

I stared at him.

Move on? Just like that? How could he say that as if what we had was nothing? He had just caused my world to shatter into a million pieces and he expected me to move on as if it was just a hangover? For God's sake, we were married for six fucking years? So how?

I could hear the guests nearby whisper and I could feel their judgmental eyes piercing my soul. I felt naked and

exposed in the worst way possible. There was no way I could be like this anymore.

So swallowing the lump in my throat, I squared my shoulders, signed the papers and threw them at Liam's chest.

"You'll regret this," I said as I looked at him with nothing but pure hatred.

Charlotte smirked just then as her hands rested protectively over her stomach which made it obvious she was already pregnant. "I doubt that."

The sight of her, gloating in her triumph, was just the final straw for me. I couldn't look at her or I might be forced to do something harmful to her.

So without another word, I turned and stormed out of the ballroom even as a singular thought rang in my mind:

I was going to make Liam and the rest of them regret this.
