My husband committed suicide on our wedding night. My mother-in-law desperately ripped my clothes off and told everyone that I had killed her son. Everyone thought she was crazy. Only I, smiling at the madness, came up to my ear and whispered, "You're next."

Chapter 1

My husband committed suicide on our wedding night.

Margot Price, my mother-in-law, tore at my clothes, screaming to everyone that I was the one who killed her son.

People thought she had lost her mind.

Only I, watching her madness, leaned in and whispered softly, "You'll be the next to suffer."

1

My husband, Leland Price, killed himself.

On our wedding night, he suddenly rushed to Margot, who hadn't yet left, and shouted frantically, "Do I have an elder sister?"

Margot vehemently denied it, "Your father only has one son. How can you have a sister?"

Leland laughed hysterically, turned towards the balcony, opened the window, and jumped out.

2

As we were leaving the funeral home, Margot's cries echoed with the raw pain of a mother who lost her child. She could barely stand, relying on my father-in-law for support.

My father-in-law, too, had red and bloodshot eyes, and the grief of losing his son had turned his hair gray overnight.

He looked much older.

I followed them in a daze, dressed in black, my already slender figure appearing even more frail, as if I felt as fragile as a leaf in the wind.

Many friends and relatives looked at me with pity.

After all, I had just married, and my husband committed suicide, turning me from a bride to a widow in an instant. How could they not feel sorry for me?

Some came forward to comfort me, "Edie, the dead can't come back. You're still young. Look ahead."

The words were neither loud nor soft, just enough for Margot to hear.

She turned her head sharply, glaring at me with hatred.

"It's you! You're the curse who killed my son! My son was so good-natured, so bright and cheerful, yet he killed himself right after marrying you. You're a bad omen, a curse! Bring my son back to me!"

Margot grew more agitated, her eyes flashing with malice, and she lunged at me, grabbing my throat.

The overwhelming sensation of suffocation surged up. I clutched at Margot's hands, trying to break free from her grip, while desperately gasping for fresh air.

But I couldn't stop the feeling of impending death from lack of oxygen.

Fortunately, my father-in-law and friends pulled Margot away from me in time.

Only then was I able to escape, sitting on the ground, gulping in fresh air.

Margot, unsatisfied with not having strangled me, continued to make a scene, trying to lunge at me again. "Edie Mccoy, you jinx! I want you to atone for my son's death! Go die!"

The commotion drew the attention of passersby, who stopped to watch.

My father-in-law, seeing her making such a fuss and bringing a shame on the family, couldn't help but slap her across the face. "Shut up!"

Only then did Margot quiet down.

Seeing her stop, my father-in-law turned to me. "Edie, Margot is grieving. She's lost her mind for a moment. Don't take it to heart."

I nodded, eyes red. "I understand how she feels. I don't blame her."

My compliance brought a hint of satisfaction to my father-in-law's face, and he nodded at me warmly. "You're a good child. Sorry for your trouble."

3

Because Margot was too emotional, I had to leave early.

Returning to the marital home, the silence was suffocating.

I stood before the wedding photo of Leland and me, looking at his sunny, handsome face, my vision blurred by tears.

This home was carefully arranged by Leland and me, with furniture we both loved.

Who could have imagined that the cheerful young man who promised to love me forever during the day would become a shattered corpse by night?

I sat quietly in the room until late at night, finally falling asleep by the bedside.

The next day, I was awakened by the loud sound of a drill outside the door.

Opening the door, I saw Margot with a locksmith, trying to break into my home!

As soon as she saw me, Margot couldn't control herself and rushed at me, tearing at my clothes and pushing me out the door.

"Edie, you killed my son, and you dare live in his apartment? Get out!"

"Margot, don't do this. This is my home too. It's Leland's and my home!" I pleaded.

Margot spat at me viciously. "Bah! This apartment was bought by my son. You jinx killed him. How dare you stay here? Do you think you can call this your home? You're an orphan. Can you afford a luxury apartment worth millions? How brazen you are!"

Margot cursed as she threw my belongings outside, quickly turning the apartment into a mess.

When she tried to destroy our wedding photo, I couldn't hold back and rushed to protect it. "Margot, please don't! This is the only memory Leland left me."

Unmoved, Margot, unable to destroy the photo, began to beat me furiously.

"Sir, please call the police for me. Help me!" I cried, reaching out to the locksmith for help.

The locksmith, already stunned by the scene, quickly took out his phone and called the police.

The police, accustomed to domestic disputes, intervened with practiced efficiency, and Margot reluctantly stopped.

She turned to the police, crying that I was trying to take over the apartment after her son's death.

Helpless, I showed the deed with my name on it. "Margot, this apartment is truly mine."

Seeing the deed, Margot became even more agitated.

"Edie! This apartment was bought by my son. You must have tricked him into transferring it to you before killing him!"

Her eyes were bloodshot, her sharp voice almost piercing everyone's eardrums.

"Edie, you're a murderer! I want you to pay with your life for my son!"

She lunged at me, trying to strangle me again.

The police quickly intervened, shielding me.

But Margot was out of control, swinging her arms wildly, hitting the officers protecting me.

Finally, the police, fed up, took both her and me to the station.

Even then, Margot showed no remorse.

In the police car, she looked at me with venomous eyes. "Edie, you killed my son. I will make you pay with your life!"

I leaned back, with a hint of grievance on my pale face.

I turned to Margot, a barely noticeable smirk on my lips. "Don't you know how Leland died?"

Margot's face turned ashen at my words.

4

Not long after we arrived at the station, my father-in-law came.

His face was extremely grim as he took Margot and me out of the station.

I noticed that when he saw Margot, his hand twitched, but he held back from slapping her.

He only coldly reprimanded her, "If you dare to make a scene like this again, don't blame me for being harsh!"

Margot glanced at him, a hint of fear in her eyes.

She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but upon seeing me, she tightly shut her lips.

Perhaps because of Margot's accusations, my father-in-law felt guilty towards me, and for the first time, he let me ride in their car, personally driving me home.

On the way, he apologized in a gentle tone for Margot's behavior, "Edie, Margot has been deeply troubled lately, always suspicious. Don't take it to heart. Rest assured, no one at the company will gossip about this."

However, I didn't respond as obediently as before.

Instead, my eyes reddened, and with tears, I turned to look at my father-in-law in the back seat, choking up, "I know she is grieving, but I lost my husband too! Leland and I had even bought tickets to Brightwood for our honeymoon. But that night he suddenly rushed out, said a few words to Margot, and jumped off the building. I've been holding back, but with Margot tormenting me repeatedly, I can't take it anymore. I just want to know, Margot, what did you say to Leland? Why did he suddenly commit suicide?"

5

Inside the car, my last question filled the car with a chilling silence.

I saw my father-in-law's expression shift from calm to shock, then to anger.

He glared at Margot, his eyes almost spitting fire. "Was Leland talking to you before he died?"

Margot was silent, her head bowed, not daring to speak.

Watching them, I found their expressions particularly intriguing.

My father-in-law didn't notice my gaze; he was fixated on Margot, shouting angrily, "Speak! What exactly did you and Leland talk about?"

The outburst startled not only Margot but even the driver flinched.

Margot couldn't help but whimper softly, pitifully saying, "I-I didn't say much. That night, Leland suddenly came out and asked me if he had a sister. I said no, and then he just turned around and jumped off the building."

"Why would he suddenly ask such a question?" my father-in-law asked, his eyes narrowing slightly.

Margot cried, "I don't know! Besides, what does having a sister have to do with Leland's suicide? Could it be that someone forced him to do it?"

As she spoke, she instinctively looked up at me, meeting my deep gaze.

Suddenly, she became agitated, grabbing my father-in-law, who was deep in thought, and pointed at me, shouting, "It was her. It must have been her! That night, besides me, she was the only one in the bridal room. Before Leland came out, he was with her in the bedroom. She must have been the one who drove him to his death!"

Tears welled up in my eyes instantly. "Before Leland went out to find you that night, he was with me, opening gifts."

Margot sharply retorted, "You're lying! Leland never liked opening gifts. How could he be doing that with you?"

"But I like it, and Leland was just keeping me company..." At this point, I was already sobbing uncontrollably.

Recalling that night made my heart feel like it was being shattered over and over. One moment, we were so happy, and the next, Leland was just a broken body.

Margot wanted to argue further, but my father-in-law sternly stopped her.

He looked at me, whose tears flowed freely down the cheeks, with a hint of pity in his eyes. "Wipe your tears. Leland wouldn't want you to be in such pain."

I nodded, choking back sobs. I wiped my tears with a tissue, though my eyes still glistened with unshed tears, looking misty.

As I got out of the car, Leland's father gave me a few words of advice. "Take care of yourself and don't overthink things. Margot won't cause trouble anymore."

"Thank you," I replied, my voice choked with emotion.

Leland's father met my misty gaze, momentarily stunned, before quickly regaining his composure and giving me a gentle smile.

6

Upon watching the car drive away, a hint of sarcasm flashed in my eyes.

Since returning from the police station, Margot hadn't troubled me again.

After a period of quiet rest, I returned to work at the company.

I work at Price Group.

Yes, it was my husband's family company.

I currently held the position of deputy manager, a role I didn't get promoted to because of my relationship with Leland.

In fact, I met Leland after I became deputy manager.

At that time, he held a managerial position in the company, but he lacked work experience, so Leland's father often asked him to learn from me.

Over time, we became familiar with each other, and our relationship gradually evolved from superior-subordinate to romantic partners.

Margot never really approved of me, but Leland liked me and insisted on marrying me.

Leland's father didn't oppose our marriage, believing that my strong work abilities would be an asset to Leland's career.

Originally, Leland and I had both applied for two months of marriage leave, planning to take a nice honeymoon together after getting married.

But unexpectedly, Leland...

Now, I was the only one who returned to the company.

The employees looked at my haggard appearance with sympathy.

During lunch, Leland's father unusually invited me to join him. While eating, he kept asking if Leland had said anything strange before he jumped off the building.

I shook my head, my eyes red, and replied, "No, before Leland went out, we were opening gifts together. But before he left, he seemed to receive a text message."

Leland's father immediately became serious. "What message?"

I lowered my head, feeling guilty. "I don't know."

Leland's father sighed helplessly and didn't say anything more.

When Leland jumped, his phone shattered with him, making it impossible to check any messages now.

So, what message did he receive? No one knew except him.

7

Back home, I opened my email and was nearly startled by a chilling ghostly animation on the screen.

Just then, a message popped up on my chat app. "How is it? Are you satisfied?"

I replied, "It's fine. Wait for my message."

The other party responded, "Okay."

Closing the laptop, I went downstairs to buy a basket of fresh fruit and drove to Margot's house.

The moment Margot saw me, her face turned dark, and she asked coldly, "What are you doing here?"

Holding the gift I bought for them, I felt utterly dejected. "Margot, I wanted to see the place where Leland grew up."

At the mention of Leland, Margot exploded.

She pushed me away, letting me fall down the steps at the villa's entrance, scattering the fruit I had bought.

"Leave now! You're not welcome here, jinx!" Margot slammed the door shut with a bang.

Staring at the closed door, I closed my eyes, got up from the ground. I slowly picked up the fruit one by one, tears falling uncontrollably.

At that moment, I heard my father-in-law's voice from above. "Edie, what are you doing here?"

I looked up to see him standing in front of me.

Quickly wiping away my tears, I forced a smile. "I just wanted to take a look at this place. This is where Leland grew up, and I wanted to see it..."

As I spoke, tears began to flow uncontrollably again.

My father-in-law glanced at the scattered fruits on the ground and seemed to understand what had happened.

He sighed and crouched down to help me gather the fruits back into the basket. "You're such a good person. It's a shame things turned out this way..."

I wiped my tears and asked, "Can I ask you for a favor? Could I stay here for a while? I want to stay in Leland's room. This is his home, and here I can feel his presence, as if he hasn't left and is still with me. Please."

He looked at me with a complicated expression. "But you know how Margot is..."

"It's okay. I'll keep to myself in Leland's room and avoid any conflict with her," I quickly assured him.

In the end, he softened and agreed.

Seeing his approval, I felt a surge of happiness and picked up the basket of fruits, ready to head towards the door.

But as soon as I lifted my leg, a sharp pain shot through my right ankle.

8

I couldn't help but cry out in pain and crouched down.

My father-in-law turned back to see me clutching my ankle, my face pale and beads of sweat forming on my forehead.

He hurried over to ask, "What's wrong?"

"It's nothing..." I smiled, trying to stand up and take a step forward, but the pain forced me to crouch down again.

My father-in-law crouched down to examine my ankle. I tried to hide it, but he impatiently moved my hand away, revealing my swollen ankle.

My fair skin made the bruising on my ankle stand out, highlighting the tenderness of my uninjured skin.

His eyes narrowed slightly, and he quickly stood up. "Don't move. I'll take you to the hospital."

He called for the driver and helped me hobble to the car, taking me to the hospital.

After a thorough examination, it turned out I had a minor fracture in my ankle and needed to rest for three months.

The doctor set my ankle in a cast and prescribed medication, and my father-in-law took me back to the villa.

I initially wanted to refuse, but he insisted that since Margot was responsible for my injury, she should take care of me.

When we returned home, Margot saw him bringing me in and immediately started yelling, demanding I leave.

But he showed no patience for her antics. "You broke Edie's ankle, so you should take care of her! If you don't want to, then get out!"

Faced with his anger, Margot reluctantly agreed to let me stay in Leland's room.

However, she refused to take care of me. But fortunately, Justine Mason, the housekeeper, was there to bring me meals and water. Leland's room had its own bathroom, so I didn't need to go out much.

My father-in-law noticed my good behavior and was quite pleased. Although Margot ignored me, he would occasionally visit to check on my recovery and discuss work matters with me.

Having worked my way up to a deputy manager position, I was well-versed in the company's operations, and our conversations were always engaging.

Sometimes, I could even anticipate his next words.

Gradually, his attitude towards me became increasingly friendly.

It was clear that both my work abilities and my personality had won his favor.

He often sought me out for conversations, and sometimes even messaged me for advice on company issues.

With my suggestions, the company managed to secure several major deals that had previously seemed unattainable, and his appreciation for me grew.

He enjoyed talking to me more and more, as if I were his trusted confidante.

Occasionally, though, I felt his gaze on me was different, as if he were seeing someone else through me.

9

Because my father-in-law visited my room so frequently, Margot became suspicious.

She started entering my room often after he did, bringing me sliced fruit or a cup of water or juice, putting on the act of a caring mother-in-law.

Even my father-in-law was surprised and couldn't help but praise her, "You're starting to act more like a proper elder."

Margot shot him a reproachful look. "I was just caught up in Leland's affairs before."

But when she turned to me, her gaze was icy.

I pretended not to notice her disdain and accepted her offerings politely. "Thank you."

Margot gave me a forced smile. "You're welcome."

With that, she swayed her curvy figure out of the room.

My father-in-law watched her leave and chuckled. "Margot may speak harshly, but she means well. Now that she's come around, she won't trouble you anymore."

I nodded earnestly, but noticed the hem of Margot's skirt flashing across the door.

She was eavesdropping outside the door!
