In order to kill my husband, I waited for two years. The moment I pressed the gas pedal, I didn't hesitate at all; I turned to look at his face. He was as calm as ever, which shocked me. Since our connection began with detective novels, I decided to end this relationship by killing this man in the style of a detective story.

Chapter 1

1

The two-year wait to kill her husband Cole Castle culminated in a single decisive moment.

Sammy's foot pressed the accelerator without hesitation, yet when she turned to glimpse his face, his unsettling composure froze her breath midair.

Detective novels had been their shared language in better days. Now the novels would script their finale-a poetic symmetry even Holmes might admire.

2

Three years of marriage. A newborn's cry still echoed through the house when that woman materialized, shattering Sammy's illusion of security.

Sammy's fingers twitched with the visceral urge to reenact A Study in Scarlet's throttling scene, which somehow made she think of the child.

The child's innocent smile didn't soften her resolve to kill her husband-it hardened it.

No court would ever let another woman claim the title of "mother" to this child.

She needed Cole to be gone. Although the child would lose a father, he would eventually get through it. Thinking of this, she calmed herself down.

Her gaze lingered on the insurance brochures Cole had left on the counter, her polished nail tracing the fine print like a detective examining a clue. That would be the most romantic death, wouldn't it?

3

Cole's eyebrows shot up at the lavish spread before him. "What's the occasion?"

Despite his words, Cole gladly began to enjoy the meal.

"The pandemic's made me realize how fragile life is," Sammy said softly, adjusting the baby monitor. "I want to be the wife you deserve."

"Just relax, dear. Seize the day!" Cole replied.

Her smile never wavered as he devoured the meal, oblivious to the poison in her sweetness when she suggested increasing their life insurance. "Honey, I've been thinking. Life is unpredictable, and tomorrow and accidents are uncertain. I want to get us another insurance policy. Weren't you looking into it a few days ago? I can take care of it. What do you think?"

Cole paused slightly and glanced at Sammy. "Alright, we're on the same page again. I'll send you the money. You handle it."

Sammy smiled, genuinely happy this time.

4

After Cole returned from the army and started his own business, he worked hard for a few years. Though he didn't become rich overnight, he saw hope.

That day, he gifted Sammy a bright red Audi Q3, and Sammy happily accepted the keys.

The crimson Audi Q3 became her rocket. Cole used to joke about her "flying too low" for her own safety.

Sometimes, when Cole drank too much at night, Sammy would be his driver, taking him to the office the next morning.

But lately he'd grip the door handle, rasping "Slow down!" at every pedestrian when she took turns at breakneck speeds.

At such times, the adrenaline would sober him faster than coffee ever could.

"I'm no ordinary girl," Sammy would counter. "Sherlock Holmes didn't fret about breaking nails." She wanted to be resourceful and skillful like Holmes.

5

The repair bills piled up-all for her red Q3.

Cole frowned at the paperwork. "Car trouble?"

"Just extra maintenance," Sammy explained. "All those business trips were a bit burdensome for the car. It can't be wrong to have more maintenance. After all, safety matters the most."

"Don't overwork yourself," he said absently. "You've got me."

Her laugh tinkled like wind chimes. "I'll practice driving more, so I can be your personal chauffeur when you go to the office. You won't have to be so exhausted."

Cole chuckled. "Better hurry up, lady driver."

When she turned away, her smile hardened into something glacial.

6

Cole noticed the change in Sammy.

She returned home early now, cooking elaborate dinners.

The old Sammy was a tomboyish girl; the new Sammy was increasingly like a capable wife and mother.

The lazy woman who only knew how to cook instant noodles now produced restaurant-quality dishes. Beef Wellington,Boeuf Bourguignon,Ossobuco alla Milanese,Roasted Turkey,French Onion Soup, etc.

Even her failures, he ate without complaint-though these grew increasingly rare. Most of her works were amazing.

He couldn't deny her culinary genius.

Watching him lick the plate clean, she'd hug him with girlish enthusiasm. Her smile never reached her eyes.

7

At night, her strong hands kneaded his tired muscles.

"You're learning more and more. If we compare real life to the detective world. You're reaching Watson's competency," Cole groaned into the pillow.

Her technique walked the line between pleasure and pain-leaving him drowsy yet oddly energized.

Every time, Cole would fall into a deep sleep during the massage. Despite the pain, he enjoyed it.

"Where'd you learn this?" he once asked.

Sammy produced a dog-eared copy of a book whose name was Busy, But Still a Good Wife.

"The method matters less than the intention," she purred.

She felt his gratitude-and his arousal-before he flipped her onto the mattress.

When Cole gently pressed her onto the bed, Sammy quickly turned off the light.

It went dark just in time to hide her grimace.

8

Soon she drove him daily, sober or not.

Bach's cello suites filled the Q3 as Cole lounged in back, now Cole had been accustomed to Sammy's speed. He barely glanced at the strolling pedestrians, but still reminded her to hold the speed.

But he noticed something feral in her driving-in the white-knuckled grip on the wheel. Sammy might be experiencing mood swings because her irritability was almost written on her face. She just shook her head, eyes locked on the road.

9

That night's massage lasted barely five minutes.

"Let's watch Fringe," Cole suggested. "It's about brilliant criminals -right up our alley. We can try analyzing the case together."

Sammy's noncommittal smile said everything and nothing.
