Will their love survive the inferno?

Chapter 1 The Audition of Shadows

The jagged crown of glass and steel that was the Los Angeles skyline shimmered in the cruel Californian sun. The city spread out before the full-glass window of Ethan Patel's penthouse office, like a diamond-studded carpet, its facet reflecting his own rapid ascent. He loomed at the floor-to-ceiling window, with an epic view as his backdrop, his face turned in an expression of almost detached repose. The cool, artificial air did little to quell the simmering unease that had embedded itself in his gut.

Ethan Patel- a British import, movie mogul, and the man whose name was whispered in hushed tones at every industry gala. At thirty-five, he had constructed a cinematic empire with astute deals, audacious risks and a winning charm that never withered even the most curdled critics. His chiseled face, defined by sharp intellect and studious charisma, graced top magazines and paparazzi pursued his every move with doggedness.

But within the carefully cultivated facade of the playboy billionaire was a man whose past romantic entanglement had haunted him, a wound had festered into a deep-seated cynicism.

His tumultuous romance with Lena Ruby, the pop sensation whose game rivaled his own, had ended with a grand, public explosion. The breakup had been messy, and played out in the tabloids, a brutal lesson in how easily trust can shatter in a world built on illusion.

He turned from the window, his gaze sweeping across the opulent office. The sleek, minimalist design, the expensive art, the strategically placed awards – all symbols of his success, yet they offered little comfort. He felt a restlessness, a sense of unease that had been growing steadily over the past few days. It was as if a storm was brewing, a disturbance in the carefully ordered rhythm of his life.

The intercom buzzed, today he was particularly disinterested. He'd just finished a grueling conference call with his London lawyers, a headache throbbing behind his temples, and all he wanted was a stiff scotch and the silence that came with being alone. A crisp, professional tone cutting through the silence.

"Mr. Patel, Ms. Ruby is here to see you."

The name landed like a physical blow. Sophia Ruby. He had received her request for a meeting, a desperate plea for an audition, and he had almost dismissed it out of hand. But something in her email, a raw vulnerability that belied her determined tone, had piqued his interest. Or perhaps it was something else, something he couldn't quite put his finger on, a flicker of recognition that stirred a long-dormant unease.

He pressed the button, his voice cool and controlled. "Send her in."

The door opened, and Sophia stepped into the room. She was nothing like he expected. There was a natural, unpolished beauty about her, a stark contrast to the manufactured glamour that permeated Hollywood. Her warm, expressive eyes held a quiet determination, a vulnerability that was both disarming and unsettling. She was dressed simply, almost casually, in a way that suggested she was unfamiliar with the high-stakes world she was entering.

But it was her resemblance to Lena that struck him like a physical blow. The same delicate features, the same captivating eyes, the same subtle curve of her lips. It was uncanny, a ghost from his past materialized in his present. A wave of anger, sharp and sudden, surged through him. He had thought he had buried the memories, locked them away in the deepest recesses of his mind.

He knew those eyes. He knew that face.

A cold fist clenched around his heart.

"Lena?" he rasped, the name a venomous whisper.

The woman flinched, her green eyes widening further. "No, Mr. Patel. I'm Sophia. Sophia Ruby. Lena is... my sister."

Sister.

The word hung in the air, a poisoned dart. Lena Ruby. The pop princess with the voice of an angel and the heart of a viper. The woman who'd left a trail of broken promises and shattered trust in her wake. Ethan hadn't uttered her name in years, had banished her from his thoughts, from his life. And now, here was her... sister. A mirror image, a haunting echo of the woman he'd sworn to forget.

He watched her, his expression unreadable, his mind racing. Why was she here? Was this a calculated move, a ploy by Lena to infiltrate his life once more? Or was it something else entirely, a desperate attempt by a young woman to carve her own path in a world that thrived on connections and manipulation? He would find out. He would play this game, but on his terms. He would use her, just as he had been used. He would expose her, just as he had been exposed. And he would make sure that Lena Ruby's sister paid for the sins of her past.

"You're here for an audition?" he asked, his voice laced with a skepticism that could freeze a desert.

She nodded, her gaze unwavering. "Yes, sir. I know I'm not... well-known. But I've been acting for years, and I'm good. Really good."

He scoffed. "Good? Is that what you call it? Or is this another one of your family's elaborate performances? Are you here to finish what your sister started?" He leaned forward, the polished surface of his desk a barrier between them. "Because if you are, you're wasting your time. I have no interest in any Ruby, especially one that carries the ghost of Lena."

"I'm not my sister," she said, her voice sharp. "I'm my own person."

He chuckled, a low, humorless sound.

A flush crept up her neck, staining her pale skin. "I'm not Lena," she repeated, her voice firm. "I'm not here to play games. I need this. I need a chance."

He watched her, a predator assessing its prey. There was something about her, a raw vulnerability that tugged at him, a spark of defiance that intrigued him. And then, a dark, dangerous idea began to form in his mind. An idea that would allow him to settle an old score, to finally exorcise the ghost of Lena Ruby.

"A chance," he echoed, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. "I think I can arrange that." He gestured to the empty space in front of his desk. "Show me what you've got, Miss Ruby. Show me why I shouldn't send you packing back to whatever hole your sister crawled out of."

He watched as she took a deep breath, her shoulders straightening, her eyes hardening with a determination that was almost frightening. He handed her a script, a scene he knew was notoriously difficult, a scene that had broken even the most seasoned actors.

And as she began to speak, as the words flowed from her lips, Ethan Patel felt a shiver run down his spine. She wasn't just good. She was... exceptional.

Sophia's voice filled the room, a chameleon shifting through emotions. It was a scene of raw vulnerability, a woman pleading for forgiveness, her heart laid bare. She moved with a subtle grace, her hands gesturing with an almost unconscious eloquence. Ethan watched, his skepticism slowly eroding, replaced by a grudging admiration. He'd seen countless auditions, but this was different. This wasn't just acting; it was a visceral experience.

The scene ended, the silence in the room thick with unspoken tension. Sophia's chest rose and fell with rapid breaths, her eyes still shimmering with the residual emotions of the character. She looked at him, a silent question in her gaze.

"Well?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Ethan leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. "Impressive," he admitted, the word clipped and reluctant. "Very impressive."

Sophia let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "Thank you."

"But," he continued, his tone turning sharp, "talent alone isn't enough in this city. You need more than just a pretty face and a few practiced lines. You need... something else."

"You have some experience," he said, his voice dismissive. "But nothing that stands out. Nothing that would justify giving you a role in one of my films."

Sophia felt a wave of disappointment wash over her. She had known it was a long shot, but she had hoped...

"However," he said, his voice suddenly sharp, "I am intrigued."

Her heart skipped a beat. "Intrigued?"

"Yes," he said, his eyes gleaming. "Intrigued by your... determination. Intrigued by your resemblance to your sister. And intrigued by the fact that you dare to stand before me, after everything that has happened." He thought.

His eyes locking onto hers. "but I'm looking for something... unique. Something extraordinary."

He rose from his chair, circling her like a predator. "Tell me, Miss Ruby, what are you willing to do to get what you want?"
