Adrian DeLuca, a ruthless billionaire by day and feared mafia kingpin by night, is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his empire-even if that means bringing Isla into his world. As Isla is pulled deeper into Adrian's dangerous life, their complex relationship becomes a dangerous game of power, passion, and betrayal. Drawn to his dark allure, Isla faces a choice between loving a man with a deadly secret and risking everything, or bringing him down to save herself.

Chapter 1 The dangerous lead

The city pulsed with life beneath the golden glow of streetlights, a restless beast that never truly slept. Isla Romano had spent years chasing its secrets, but tonight, she was after something far more dangerous than political scandals or corporate fraud.

Tonight, she was stepping into the world of Adrian DeLuca a man whispered about in darkened alleys, a name both feared and respected. She tightened her grip on her clutch, her fingers brushing against the hidden recorder tucked inside. This was her chance. After months of research, dead ends, and hushed warnings from sources too afraid to speak, Isla had finally found a way into his world. The exclusive gala at the Valentino Hotel was her opportunity to get close, to confirm what she had only suspected until now Adrian DeLuca was more than just a billionaire entrepreneur.

He was the puppeteer behind a vast criminal empire. Dressed in an elegant emerald gown, Isla stepped through the towering glass doors, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor.

The room was a spectacle of wealth crystal chandeliers shimmered overhead, and the scent of expensive champagne and imported cigars clung to the air. Power radiated from every guest, but it was his presence that made the air heavy. She spotted him instantly. Adrian DeLuca stood near the grand staircase, engaged in conversation with a senator and a tech mogul, exuding effortless dominance. He was dressed in a tailored black suit, his dark hair neatly styled, his chiseled features unreadable.

His very stance demanded attention, his aura a mixture of control and quiet menace. Isla exhaled slowly. She had covered dangerous men before corrupt politicians, arms dealers but Adrian was different. He wasn't just another criminal hiding behind a legitimate empire.

He was the king of New York's underworld, and tonight, she would get the proof she needed to bring him down.

Lifting a flute of champagne from a passing tray, Isla maneuvered through the crowd, careful not to draw unwanted attention. She knew the risks. If Adrian even suspected her intentions, she wouldn't make it out of this hotel unscathed. "Enjoying the party?" A deep, velvety voice sent a shiver down her spine. Isla turned sharply, her breath catching as she found herself face to face with the man she had come to expose.

Adrian DeLuca. Up close, he was even more intimidating. His sharp, hazel eyes locked onto hers, assessing, calculating.A slow smirk curved his lips, as if he had already unraveled all her secrets in a single glance. Isla forced a smile, playing the role she had rehearsed. "It's quite the event. Though I must say, it's hard to tell if people are here for the charity or the networking."

Adrian chuckled, but there was no warmth in it. "In rooms like these, people rarely do anything without an agenda." He tilted his head, his gaze never wavering. "Tell me, Miss Romano, what's yours?" Her heart pounded. He knew her name.

She masked her unease with a sip of champagne, willing her voice to remain steady. "A journalist always has an agenda, Mr. DeLuca. We chase stories, uncover truths." "Ah." He took a step closer, the scent of his cologne a mix of cedarwood and something darker invading her senses.

"And what truth are you hoping to uncover tonight?" Isla held her ground. "The usual secrets, scandals, the kind of things powerful men like to keep buried."

His smirk widened, but his eyes darkened. "Careful, Miss Romano. Some secrets are dangerous." The warning in his voice was unmistakable. He knew.Maybe not everything, but enough to be suspicious. Too much, too soon. She needed to retreat before she tipped her hand. Before she could respond, a commotion broke out near the entrance. A group of men had entered uninvited, dangerous-looking.

The room tensed as security moved in, but Adrian remained eerily calm. "Excuse me," he murmured, his gaze lingering on her for a moment longer before he turned away. Isla watched as he strode toward the disturbance, her instincts screaming at her to leave.

But as she moved toward the exit, a firm hand closed around her wrist. She barely had time to react before a low voice whispered in her ear, "You shouldn't have come here, Isla."

Her blood ran cold. Someone was watching her. She turned slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs. A man in a dark suit stood before her, his expression unreadable.

"Who are you?" she demanded, keeping her voice steady despite the chill racing down her spine. He smirked, tilting his head toward Adrian, who was now speaking to the group of men with a deadly calm.

"Let's just say I'm someone who doesn't want to see you get hurt. And if you stay, you will." Isla's pulse spiked, but she squared her shoulders. "I can take care of myself."

The man chuckled softly, but there was no amusement in it. "That's what they all say until they realize too late that Adrian DeLuca doesn't let go of what's his."

Before she could respond, the grip on her wrist loosened, and the stranger melted into the crowd, disappearing as quickly as he had come. A sharp sense of unease settled in her stomach. Isla had expected danger, but she hadn't expected this a warning, a claim, a game she was already caught in without knowing the rules.

Her gaze drifted back to Adrian, who now stood alone, watching her with an expression she couldn't decipher. And in that moment, she realized the truth: She wasn't just investigating Adrian DeLuca anymore.

She was in his sights. And Adrian DeLuca always got what he wanted. But the night wasn't over yet. As she made her way toward the exit, the weight of his gaze burned into her back. A waiter suddenly stepped in front of her, offering a small folded note along with a fresh glass of champagne.

Confused, Isla took the note and unfolded it. You're playing a dangerous game, little journalist. Be careful who you trust.

Her breath hitched. Her eyes flickered to Adrian once more, but he was already turned away, speaking to a group of investors. Had he sent this? Or was there another unseen player in this high-stakes game? One thing was certain she was in deeper than she had ever imagined
