"As she crept through the dark hallway 24 years- 24-year-old Elma Moreno could feel the weight of her family's disdain her father who lost his career in life had made it clear that she was nothing but a burden. Her stepmother a cold and calculating woman seemed to take pleasure in Elma's misery.

Elma's heart racing, she reached the door to her bedroom and slowly turned the handle.She slipped inside, locking the door behind her. But she knew it was only a matter of time before they found her.

Things were not always like she missed the good old days were her father was loving and caring.

She was told by her father that her mother died while giving birth to her.

Lost in her thoughts of her father's good memories

Her father's voice echoed in her mind:

You are worthless, Elma. You will never amount to anything. 'Elma's eyes narrowed, a spark of defiance igniting within her. She was tired of being powerless.

As she packed a small bag, Elma made a vow to herself: she would escape'and she would make them pay for the way they'd treated her. But as she turned to leave, Elma was confronted by her stepmother who asked her where do you think you are going. Don't tell me you are planning to leave this house she said. Elma tried to explain but cut short with a resetting slap which made her fall on her bed and hot tears rolling down her cheeks. Her stepmother added make yourself useful by getting a job to assist in paying the bills. She walked out of the room locking Elma inside to prevent her from leaving the house.

Elma stayed up all night crying and wishing she was not born into this world.

The following morning, she picked up her phone

searching through the internet for a job since she didn't have any form of qualification because she didn't go to college. Her father had stopped paying her tuition after the incident that made him lose his career and go broke.

She then called her childhood friend who lost both her parents in a car accident and was now working as a waitress in a club to see if they were looking for a worker. To her biggest surprise, they were looking for a worker which made it very easy for her to apply for the position. Her friend then told the manager that she had someone who could do the work and that was how Elma started working as a waitress in the club.

In the evening of that same day, she summoned up the courage to inform her father and stepmother about her new job. After she was done talking to them her father did not say a word to her. Her stepmom then said do all you can to bring money back home, even if it means selling your body. She said and walked out of the living room.

Elma who was not surprised about their reaction went upstairs to her room, when she got to her room, she sat on the bed staring at her late mother's portrait. She could not help but cry.

She fell asleep while holding her mother's portrait

She was still sleeping when she heard her stepmother's voice telling her to come downstairs and do the laundry.

Without wasting much time she got up and went downstairs to do the laundry before her stepmother got angry or scolded her.

When she was done doing the laundry she was hungry so she decided to go to the kitchen to get herself some food. When she heard her stepmother's voice say who gave you the order city to enter my kitchen to dish my food on my plate not your late mother's plate, are you out of your mind, she said. But mom you could have just told me not to use your plate instead of dragging my late mother into this. Before she could finish her sentence her stepmother's hand landed on her face how dear you talk to me with such disrespect. The plate Elma was holding fell from her hand immediately she began shaking and crying while trying to clean up the mess she made.

The next day it was time for Emla to go to work and her friend was waiting for her outside when her stepmother entered her room say: don't think of coming back to my house without any money have I made myself clear she added. Elma nodded in fear as she quickly got dressed and left the house. While on their way to work her friend noticed that she was sad and said jokingly you know you have to put a smile on your face so you don't scare our customers off on your first day. You don't have to always look like your problem. Elma looked at her and said I know I will try my best to be as cheerful as I can, they both laughed.

When they got to work they were a bit early and Elma was nervous because it was her first time working as a waitress in a club. Her friend was enlightening how on how things are done here, showing her around the club, introducing her to some of the workers there, showing her some of the most expensive wines and not expensive ones and what they are called. Shortly after they were done the club was officially opened and customers started coming in to have a good time.

A customer walked in he noticed Elma complimented her on her appearance and said are you new here he asked? Elma then responded yes sir I started today she said with a smile. The customer then said oh I see, that means I will get to see more often then. Elma replied yes sir so what can I get you, sir. The customer then told her what he wanted and she served him right away without any hesitation just to make a good first impression.

It was a long and stressful night for her after the club had closed. She and her friend went to the cashier to submit the money they made that night. After that they proceeded to count the tips they got from their customers, Elma was happy with the money she made that night but after remembering that all the money would be taken from her by her stepmother she was sad.
