Chapter one.
Athena Moonstone Pov.
I live a miserable life in the Red Stone pack. Being the most hated wolf and an omega is really hard. It all started when I had my first shift and became the most beautiful she-wolf in the pack. Then, Garret, the adopted brother of our Alpha Felix, tried to hurt me in the woods. I was scared, but somehow I ended up killing him in self-defense.
After that day, my life turned into a nightmare. I was bullied, starved, and beaten. I had to do terrible and hard jobs for the pack. I even asked for help from the Wolf Court, but no one listened to me. I was just an omega. I tried to talk to Felicia, Garret's wife, about how he treated me, but she didn't believe me. Instead, she turned her back on me and left me to suffer.
My parents were afraid of what could happen, so they cut ties with me. Now I have no home except the dirty closet I sleep in at the pack house.
"Where the hell is that awful omega!" Felicia shouted from the top of the stairs, making me roll my eyes as I got up from the cold floor. According to the law, I should be executed, but Felicia thought a quick death was too nice for me.
I took a deep breath and walked into the main pack room where Felicia waited for me, looking all pretty in a red gown and tapping her foot impatiently.
She threw a dirty, wet towel at me. I was annoyed but tried to stay calm as I tossed it away.
"What was that for, Lady Felicia?" I asked, keeping my head down to be polite, but my insides were boiling.
"How dare you!" she shouted and came closer, slapping me hard. Her maids grabbed my arms, making me feel helpless. I struggled, but I was just an omega. I was weak, with no chance against them. "I told you to wash this two nights ago! You just shoved it back in my closet? Is it poisoned? Do you want to kill me like you did my husband?"
Every word she said came with a punch, leaving my face bruised and bleeding.
"I would gladly kill that bastard you call a husband!" I shot back, my eyes burning with anger. I might be weak, but I had learned to handle pain.
For a moment, Felicia looked uncertain. Before I killed Garret, I was her head maid. She knew how he treated me, but I couldn't understand why she still defended him like he was a saint.
I pulled myself up from the ground, still feeling the sting of her slap on my cheek. The dim light of the room barely reached the corners where dust had gathered. I hated how it seemed like the dirt could cling to me, much like the shame that followed me everywhere. I took a deep breath, fighting back tears, and shuffled to the small closet at the end of the hall.
The closet was a mess, filled with clothes I barely wore. I grabbed a ragged towel, muttering under my breath about the irony of it all. Here I was, an omega-once the shining star of the pack, now just a shadow. I wiped my face quickly, the cool fabric a brief relief against the heat of my anger.
After looking somewhat presentable, I dashed towards the large kitchen near the dining hall, where the scent of breakfast wafted through the air. I had chores to do, serving breakfast to the pack members before the real chaos of the day began. I could already picture the bustling dining hall, where laughter mingled with the sounds of clattering dishes.
As I entered, the warmth enveloped me, but so did the familiar waves of disdain. I began to serve the food, picking up a plate piled high with eggs and sausage, trying to focus on the task at hand. But then, my heart nearly jumped out of my chest as I caught sight of him-Brandon.
He was sitting at the far end of the long table, utterly captivating. His dark hair fell just off his forehead, framing his sharp jaw and those striking blue eyes that everyone always raved about. He had the perfect smile, yet there was something mocking about it, like he knew how much power he held over everyone, particularly me. My stomach twisted with something I didn't want to think about.
"What's wrong, Athena? Cat got your tongue?" a voice taunted, and I forced my eyes away from Brandon.
"Shut up, Hayley," I muttered, but inside, my palms were clammy. As I approached Brandon to serve him, our eyes met, and it felt like a lightning bolt struck. His gaze held mine for just a second too long. Why was he looking at me like that? It sent a shiver down my spine.
"Hey, Ol' Mighty Omega!" he called out, his tone teasing. My heart raced-it was both maddening and thrilling.
"Uh, this is your breakfast," I stammered, setting the plate down. My cheeks felt warmer than the stove. "Enjoy."
"Why don't you sit with us?" he said, and I could have sworn that my heart stopped. Was he really inviting me? But then I remembered-he was the biggest douchebag in history. I shook my head.
"Thanks, but I've got a lot to do," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
As I turned away, I felt a rush of laughter behind me; someone threw a sausage, and it hit me right in the back. I whirled around to see my little brother Casen doubled over in laughter, and the entire table erupted. My cheeks burned with embarrassment as I shot him a glare.
"Casen!" I hissed, but he just smirked, enjoying the chaos he created. Mom and Dad were sitting quietly at a corner table, their eyes avoiding mine like they were held by invisible strings.
I sighed, the laughter ringing in my ears, and turned back to my work. The heavy words and harsh glances whispered that I wasn't wanted here, that I didn't belong. With each plate I served, I thought of my future-a life beyond all this.
Once I turned eighteen, I would find my mate. Someone who would sweep me away and love me fiercely. Someone who would save me from this torment.
After finishing all my chores, I stepped outside, eager to escape the noise of the pack's breakfast. The sun felt alive against my skin, but a twinge of sadness hit as I watched some of the pack members head to school. I longed to be with them. Knowledge was my escape-the one thing no one could take from me, even though my position as an omega shoved me to the sidelines.
I walked over to the bleachers where the pack warriors trained. They moved with a grace and power that left me captivated. Watching them was my comfort, where I found peace amidst the chaos of my life. I could almost picture myself there, free and strong, ready to fight back against those who tormented me.
Suddenly, a sharp tug at my hair ripped me from my thoughts. I stumbled back and hit the ground hard, a gasp escaping my lips. Fiona loomed over me, her face twisted in a smug expression.
"Look who's finally gracing us with her presence," she sneered. Behind her, her two minions snickered, their eyes glinting with malice. I scowled, trying to scramble back to my feet, but they stepped in closer, blocking my escape. My heart raced in my chest, and I felt the familiar prick of anxiety rise.
"Get up, loser! Or do you want to stay there like the pathetic little omega you are?" Fiona taunted, her voice dripping with disdain. I clenched my fists, forcing down the anger that bubbled to the surface.
"Why do you always have to pick on me, Fiona?" I spat, my voice trembling.
"Because it's so easy," she shot back, her cruel smile widening. "And I can't let someone like you think you can look at my boyfriend. You know he'll never want someone as disgusting as you."
As if the words themselves were arrows, they pierced through me, and before I could retort, the two minions pushed me down again, and I hit the ground with a thud. Pain shot through my body, but I refused to let it show. I glared up at them, trying to muster defiance in my eyes, but the trembling in my lip betrayed me.
"Don't you ever lay your disgusting eyes on my boyfriend!" Fiona snarled, her breath hot and furious.
