Ava Hart thought one night couldn't change everything. As a talented branding consultant carving out a quiet life in London, Ava had one rule-never mix business with pleasure. That rule shattered the night she gave into temptation and spent one unforgettable night with billionaire CEO Jaxon Black, her client and the city's most elusive power player. It was meant to be fleeting. She left before dawn, her heart rattled but her boundaries intact. Then came the rejection-cold, calculated, and swift. Jaxon didn't even acknowledge what they shared. He froze her out the next day, professional and emotionally distant. Ava left without looking back. Two years later, Ava is different. Stronger. Wiser. More guarded-and hiding a secret that changed everything. She's just landed the biggest client of her career-Blackstone Global, Jaxon's empire. She didn't expect Jaxon to be the one to approve the campaign personally. She definitely didn't expect the heat in his eyes or the way her presence seems to shake him. But Ava is done playing second to a man who discarded her like she never mattered. She'll deliver this project with professionalism and move on, like she was never caught in his orbit to begin with. Only now... someone is watching her. Jaxon Black has never stopped thinking about her. He told himself that night meant nothing. That walking away was the right call-for both of them. But when Ava reenters his world, radiant and composed, every lie he told himself starts to crack. He needs her ideas. He needs her presence. And he might need her for more than just business. There's only one problem. He's no longer alone. Sienna Black, his adopted sister and current partner in the family business, is watching every move. She's elegant, driven, and fiercely territorial. She's always made it clear: Jaxon belongs with her-personally and professionally. She's determined to be the woman beside him when he finally takes the helm of the empire for good. And Ava? Ava is a threat Sienna will not ignore. Meanwhile, Ava's world is growing darker. Strange notes. Tripped alarms. A shadow outside her window. At first, she chalks it up to paranoia. But her younger sister Lily moves in after seeing something Ava couldn't explain. Her older brother Ethan, a powerful corporate lawyer abroad, sends a private security firm to help. But nothing seems to stop the feeling that someone is watching. Ava starts to move on. Her career blossoms. Her bond with Lily deepens. She even agrees to meet someone new, trying to push her past with Jaxon behind her. But every step forward is haunted by his eyes, his voice, his presence in every room she enters. Because Jaxon isn't backing down this time

Chapter 1 One night in manhattan

The beat pulsed in her veins like an electric jolt, but Ava Hart could hardly process it amid all the commotion in her mind. Her friends were still dancing on the rooftop club's other side, but she had fought to have some air and room to think.

She could feel her phone buzzing in her bag: another call from work.

It was her birthday. She was not supposed to spend her evening on spreadsheets and campaigns, regardless of whether her ad agency had just secured its biggest account.

This evening was about laughter. Freedom. Forgetting her problems for some hours.

She felt eyes on her as she danced; it felt hot and burned into her core.

She gave him attention thereafter.

He leaned against the railing, bracing himself, Manhattan glinting behind him like a pricey background. He was dressed in a black blazer. No tie. Open collar. Jawline that could halt rational thought in its tracks.

He glanced over his shoulder to see that she was gazing at him.

She stepped back quickly, blushing. Well done, Ava. Well done.

He bridged their chasm in an atmosphere of superiority that bordered on insanity.

She held her breath when she saw him moving towards her.

He stopped in front of her.

You don't like crowds? He asked, speaking in his smooth, smoky tone.

She glanced at him. "I like them okay. I need to get away from acting now and then."

He smiled lazily, in charge. "Honest. I like that."

She leaned to one side. "And you?"

"I prefer women who don't play games." He extended his hand. "Jaxon."

She accepted it. "Ava."

Their hands touched for an additional second longer than was needed.

Are there other people with you?

Friends. You?

He shrugged. "Was at a conference meeting here. Did not mean to stay on, but." His gaze drifted to her. "Things have a way of happening."

She could have left him. She ought to have smiled and rejoined her friends-she needed to-but she was stopped.

Heegarding her as if she were the only person in the room.

"Go with me," he said. She took a breath. "Where?"

"Somewhere less crowded," he said to her. She stood there frozen, and then she nodded.

His penthouse was preposterous.

Floor-to-ceiling windows. Such a silhouette that shone like it had been computer-generated. Paintings on the walls that must have cost more money than she made in one year.

She moved to the window and gazed outside over toward the city. "You live here?"

"Sometimes." He poured two glasses of scotch. "I travel on my job."

She sipped her drink, still staring at the cityscape. "What is it that you do?"

I own belongings.

Mysterious and secretive

She stood before him. "So rich and secretive. Deadly mix."

He stepped closer to her. "Still here, anyway."

She was. And as he leaned over to kiss her, she let him.

It was not her style. She did not bring strangers to her apartment. She did not do casual. But all this wasn't casual. It was all-consuming. All-encompassing. Like a fire that one spark had lit off that could not now be extinguished.

She was not aware that they were in his bedroom.

Only that everything else faded away.

Ava woke to sunlight and silence.

The space beside her was cold.

She gradually sat up and attempted to wipe the sleep from her eyes, holding the sheets over her chest. Jaxon was not there. No message. No text. Just.... gone.

Her chest tightened. What had she expected? That he'd make her breakfast? Ask for her number a night, she told herself.

But something about how he'd touched her, looked at her-it hadn't felt like just anything.

She found her dress, pulled it on, and left before she could start overthinking it.

Three Months Later

Smoothing her skirt down and adjusting her blazer, she was about to enter the conference room. This was it-the pitch that could earn her promotion. Her agency had been after this particular account for years. Acing this pitch could be a game-changer.

She took a calming breath and stood in front of the door when the CEO arrived.

She stayed still.

Jaxon

He also tensed for a moment. Then, however, his expression blanked.

Cold.

"Ava," he said in a toneless voice. "Nice to see you again."

Did he remember her?

She went through slides, speaking calmly, her face unyielding. But she was disintegrating from within.

He didn't answer. Didn't smile. Didn't even look at her

anymore like he used to that evening.

She was shaking at the end of the meeting.

"Wait a minute, Ava," he told her after all others had departed.

She waited for the door to close before she spoke. "Quite a reunion that was."

He remained unfazed. "You're undertaking this campaign?"

Yes.

An extended silence.

"That night," she whispered. Did that not mean anything to you?"

He met her gaze, eyes unyielding. "It was just a one-night stand ."

Bite firmly like a slap.

Ava?

She swallowed. "Yes."

He adjusted his cuffs. "You're very good at your work. Focus on that."

And so he departed.

As he had previously done.
