Chapter 1 Divorce

Lu Jingli's lawyer walked into my hospital ward and stood before me. He pulled out a seat and sat down. Opening his portfolio, he took out the divorce papers.

"Ms. Mo, please sign this paper and end your marriage with my client," the lawyer instructed.

I didn't know whether I should smile or weep. Lu Jingli is really a beast. He couldn't even let me leave the hospital before bringing these papers to me.

"What if I refuse to sign?" I asked. What would Lu Jingli and his mother do if I refused to sign the divorce papers?

My marriage would remain intact, preventing him from being with Tiana Mo. He can't possibly force me, considering he's the one who drugged me.

The lawyer smirked. "Then you will force my client to take drastic action and go public with your adulterous lifestyle. Remember, you're an illegitimate daughter, and your mother's past will be dug up."

His words hit me hard. My heart skipped a beat. I had always lived my life in contrast to my mother's. My mother was said to have had me out of wedlock.

When my parents decided to get married, a reckless driver hit my mother, and she couldn't survive. I was left as an illegitimate daughter.

I was only three when my father married Molly Mo, and a year later, they had Tiana. I had grown up under my stepmother's tutelage.

While my father was alive, Molly Mo put up with me. She didn't show her hatred towards me, nor did she care much for me. We lived together without any issues until my father passed away.

When my father's will was read, it showed that he divided his wealth equally between my two sisters. Molly Mo was furious. How could my father have given me the same share of his property as Tiana? I was the illegitimate daughter. She had been kind enough to let me live in the house and bear the Mo surname. But sharing the inheritance with me? That was too much, and she would never accept it. She would get her revenge on me.

"Ms. Mo, please sign the papers," the lawyer urged, clearly in a hurry, not understanding why I was lost in thought.

I carefully raised myself to sit without disturbing the IV in my hand. I took the golden pen from the lawyer's outstretched hand.

The paper stated that I was never to return to my matrimonial home, nor did I own any shares in my father's company. My property was compensation to Lu Jingli for being cuckolded.

My hands shook as I read the condition attached to the divorce papers.

I sighed softly, trying to calm my racing thoughts. With a shaky breath, I signed the papers. By signing, I was signing away my wealth and properties, effectively condemning myself to a life of poverty.

The lawyer saw me sign and quickly took the papers from me. He placed them back in his portfolio, then raised his head and smiled for the first time since he entered the room.

"I wish you a great life, Ms. Mo, and uh, have a good day," the lawyer said, standing up and walking out of the hospital ward.

I watched him leave, and my tears began to fall. I had been ruined. My life had become empty and void.

I am empty. No parents, no husband. I thought I had a sister, but it turns out she was nothing more than a green snake hiding under the grass. Where is my home? Who are my people? Where do I turn for help?

I wept until I had no more strength to cry. I had nothing left except the dress I was wearing, the only thing I had left in this world.

After changing out of the hospital wear I had on, the dress was all I had left.

The lawyer stepped out of the hospital and got into a tinted car where Lu Jingli and Tiana Mo were sitting.

"She signed when I threatened her with her mother's past life," the lawyer seemed to be boasting.

"I knew you'd make her succumb. I'll add 10% to your fees," Lu Jingli replied happily. Now he was free from the shackles of that marriage.

He didn't like me one bit. I disgusted him. He had been pretending for the past four months.

"Baby, you're the best," Tiana Mo chimed, placing her head on Lu Jingli's shoulder and circling her arm around his. They kissed each other, satisfied as the chauffeur started the car and drove off.

No one came to check on me for the next two days I remained in the hospital. I ordered takeout and ate while in the hospital. I was glad that he had left my phone by my bedside.

I had transferred the little money I had into a secret account I could access. I couldn't underestimate the extent to which Lu Jingli would go.

I was able to pay my bills and get discharged from the hospital. Since I couldn't return home, I had to go to my stepmother's place.

At least that house belonged to my father as well. I could stay there for a while and figure out what to do with my life.

I boarded a taxi and told the driver the address. I could vouch for my stepmother. She wouldn't approve of what Tiana had done.

She may not have truly loved me, but she was the one who had forced me into marriage with Lu Jingli. She was to blame for forcing me to marry that idiot.

If she knew her daughter had a hand in the destruction of my marriage, Molly Mo would definitely be furious with Tiana.

The taxi driver came to a halt at the address I gave him. He waited for me to step out, but I remained in the car, lost in thought, not making any move to get out.

He glanced at me through the rearview mirror and saw my teary eyes. I was shedding tears, lost in distant thoughts.

The taxi driver shook his head. Everyone has battles to fight. He didn't know what was troubling me, but he could see how troubled and lost I looked.

He had his own battles, and I didn't know his, just as he couldn't guess mine. He sighed softly and said, "Ma'am, we're here."

But I didn't hear him. He repeated it once more and honked the horn. I suddenly jerked out of my thoughts and felt embarrassed.

How long had he been talking to me, and I hadn't heard him? He had to honk the horn to get my attention.

I wiped my tears and quickly stepped out of the car. I paid the fare, but before the driver could take the money, he said, "Ma'am, I may not know what you're going through right now, but I want you to be strong and not lose hope. Everything will be fine. Just give it time."

He took the money, and I told him to keep the change. I smiled and thanked him before hurrying toward the house.

But at the threshold, I froze when I heard voices coming from inside.
