I was ready to reveal my true identity, imagining Charles's proposal, but then I overheard the conversation. "Are you and Tracy Davis getting married?" "What about Victoria?" "She's nothing special, just a mistress." Fury coursed through me as I walked away. Tracy Davis, the girl who tormented me in high school, was now a part of Charles's plans. I ended things with Charles, then orchestrated the merger of all the companies that had humiliated me-at their wedding ceremony.

Chapter 1 Chapter 1

"Miss. Winston?"

Years ago, when I was searching for the perfect car to mark a milestone in my life, the salesman at this high-end dealership had given me a hand. I never imagined he'd remember me after all these years.

"Which Miss. Winston?" someone asked.

"The only daughter of the Winston fortune!" the salesman replied.

"Her? No way. She looks like someone who couldn't afford the down payment, not a single luxury brand on her. Who does she think she is, pretending to be rich? If she's really the heir to the Winston empire, then I'm a billionaire!"

"Do you honestly believe she can afford to shop here?"

"Everyone knows Ms. Anderson's been busy with charity work, not making money. Who does this woman think she's fooling?"

Laughter rippled through the store. The manager, embarrassed, stammered out an apology and quickly walked away.

I turned, ready to speak, but saw Charles standing by the sidewalk, his eyes locking with mine for a split second before he quickly looked away, as if I were a stranger.

I stopped, my tone icy."Vicky, hold on! Did you not hear me?"

I kept walking, my heels clicking against the pavement. Then, without warning, my ankle buckled, and I crashed to the ground. Before I could recover, tires screeched, and a figure emerged from the blur.

Charles.

His face twisted in panic, but his eyes-empty, distant-betrayed no urgency.

"Oh, now you want to talk? Why didn't you stop for me earlier? Too embarrassed to be seen with a girl like me?"

He gently brushed my cheek with his hand.

"Vicky, you're the most extraordinary woman I've ever known. No one else even comes close."

"Is that so? Then prove it-marry me."

I locked eyes with him.

He lit a cigarette.

" Do you really think only someone like Tracy Davis is worthy of you? Is that how little I mean to you now?"

His eyes darted away.

"You know it's true, Vicky," he whispered, . "I swear to you-no matter who I marry, no matter how far I go, it will always be you in my heart. Always... It's always been you."

Three years. He showered me with everything-gifts, money, and attention-but always dodged the one thing I craved: marriage.

I thought it was his family, that they would never accept me because I wasn't wealthy enough to be their daughter-in-law.

So, I prepared for the moment when he would finally propose, ready to reveal my true identity.

And now?

He was planning to marry Tracy Davis, treating me like nothing more than a mistress, an afterthought in his life.
