On the wall-mounted television, a New York business channel was broadcasting live. Sloane Caldwell, Gordon Caldwell's adopted stepdaughter, stood in a custom couture gown with her arm looped through Darren Vaughn's-the man who, until days ago, had still been Reyna's fiancé in name. A reporter thrust a microphone toward them, asking how Sloane felt about taking over her older stepsister's clinical trials at Caldwell Pharmaceuticals.
Sloane lowered her chin. Her eyes rimmed red as she spoke in a fragile voice.
"I know how much this project meant to Reyna before her prison sentence. Darren and I will carry her share of the responsibility together."
Reyna let out a short, cold laugh. She picked up the remote and shut off the television. The black screen reflected her flat gray-green eyes.
The bedroom door swung open. Her assistant, Phoebe Hayes, walked in carrying two heavy silver temperature-controlled medical cases, a thin layer of sweat across her forehead.
"The servants downstairs are all running around for Sloane's engagement party," Phoebe said, setting one case down. "Not a single person offered to help me carry this equipment back from Europe."
Reyna took the second case from her hands. Her fingers brushed over the engraved initials M. A. on the metal shell.
Three years earlier, someone had falsified the clinical data under Reyna's name. Sloane and Gordon had turned the fabricated evidence against her, sending her to federal prison while seizing everything Reyna's late mother had left her.
That prison was where Margaret Ashcroft had chosen Reyna as her sole protégée. Once the chief toxicology expert in MI6's technical operations unit specializing in toxicological and chemical threats, Margaret had uncovered an internal scandal, been framed by a rival faction, and then been extradited under seal to the United States and buried inside a federal women's prison. Behind bars, she had taught Reyna far more than toxicology. She had trained her to read interrogations, detect manipulation, and think like an intelligence officer.
After Margaret's death, the initials on the case had led Reyna to an encrypted archive of her mentor's most sensitive case files and a trail of instructions in Europe. Margaret's former associates had tested Reyna for two years, putting her through intensive field and counter-surveillance training until they judged her worthy of carrying Margaret's methods forward.
They had given her no institute, no patents, no private laboratory, and no intelligence network. Reyna had returned to New York with only her expertise, Margaret's encrypted files, a handful of compounds she had formulated herself, and Phoebe-the one person she trusted.
"Get used to it, Phoebe. In this house, convicts don't get help."
Phoebe looked at her, hesitating before she spoke again.
"Miss Caldwell, today is also the day your marriage registration with Conrad Vaughn takes effect."
Reyna reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a signed marriage contract. Her gaze settled on Conrad Vaughn's crooked, uneven signature at the bottom of the page.
The marriage had not been Reyna's idea. After Darren abandoned her for Sloane, Gordon and the Vaughn family had arranged a match between the two relatives they considered disposable: the disgraced ex-convict and the disfigured invalid.
They had made refusal nearly impossible. If Reyna did not sign, Gordon would keep the shares her late mother had left her frozen under the existing court order, withhold the original clinical-trial records that could prove her data had been falsified, and complete the Caldwell-Vaughn merger before she could challenge either.
The Vaughns had delivered Conrad's medical records and spousal authorization documents with the marriage agreement, expecting a desperate woman to sign without examining the details. Reyna had read every page.
Conrad was the beneficial controller of the Vaughn family trust, the former chairman of Vaughn Global, and the only man who still possessed the legal authority to veto the impending merger. Three years ago, a private-plane crash had disfigured him, damaged his nerves, and left him dependent on a wheelchair. While he withdrew from public view, the family had pushed Darren into the company's management-but they could not secure complete control while Conrad remained alive.
His medical records revealed an even darker secret. The deterioration blamed on the crash did not match his original injuries. Someone had been lacing his treatment regimen with a compound neurotoxin, ensuring that he never recovered.
Reyna had not chosen Conrad. But the families forcing her into this marriage had unknowingly placed the only man capable of stopping their merger directly in her hands. She had signed the agreement because their trap offered her precisely what they had tried to deny her: access to the truth and a path back into the company her mother had built.
A discarded heiress and a poisoned patriarch. Their families believed they were burying two problems in the same grave. Reyna intended to turn that grave into a battlefield.
Laughter drifted up from the first floor. Several maids were talking loudly in the hallway about the massive bridal gifts the Vaughn family had sent over for Sloane. One maid raised her voice right outside the doorway.
"Can you believe the former heiress? Fresh out of prison, dumped by Mr. Darren, and now she's marrying Mr. Darren's disfigured, paralyzed uncle just to survive."
Phoebe's face flushed red. She reached for the doorknob to confront them, but Reyna raised a hand and stopped her.
Reyna folded the marriage document, slipped it into her handbag, and fastened the metal clasp with a sharp click. She walked over to the vanity, picked up a vintage silver fountain pen, and clipped it to her collar. Turning around, she swept her gaze across the empty closet and bare desk of the room she had lived in for over a decade, then pulled up the handle of her suitcase.
"Let's go."
Phoebe picked up the cases and followed her out into the corridor. Heavy arrangements of white roses lined the walls for Sloane's party, the thick floral scent making Reyna's brows draw together.
Two maids carrying trays of champagne glasses walked toward them. Seeing Reyna, their eyes darted sideways, and they deliberately slowed their pace to block the center of the rug.
Reyna did not slow down. She marched straight ahead, the wheels of her heavy suitcase rolling over the carpet with a low rumble. The maids gasped and scrambled to press themselves against the wall, their champagne glasses clinking and nearly spilling over the rims.
At the end of the hall, the heavy mahogany door to her father Gordon Caldwell's study remained shut.
"Should we say goodbye to Chairman Caldwell?" Phoebe asked in a low voice.
Reyna stopped and looked at the closed door for two seconds, the corner of her mouth curving into a sneer.
"He's too busy calculating how much profit Sloane can squeeze out of the Vaughn family to care about the daughter he sent to prison," Reyna said, not bothering to lower her voice.
Inside the study, the muffled sound of Gordon speaking on the phone abruptly cut off.
Reyna turned and walked down the grand staircase, her back straight. The chattering servants in the main foyer fell dead silent as her boots hit the marble floor. The butler stepped forward, holding out a plain car key with a stiff, perfunctory bow.
"Chairman Caldwell arranged a sedan to take you to the Vaughn estate."
Reyna ignored the key. She pulled out her phone, dialed a number, and spoke into the receiver.
"Pull up to the front steps."
She walked past the butler and pushed open the heavy front doors. A cold early autumn wind rushed into the hall. Waiting at the bottom of the steps was not the Caldwell family sedan, but an ordinary black SUV the Vaughn family had dispatched under the terms of the marriage agreement.
The driver stepped out and opened the rear door. Reyna glanced back once at the house built on her late mother's patents, then bent her head to step into the cabin.
"Reyna, wait!" Sloane's voice rang out as she hurried onto the top landing of the steps.
