Chapter 1
Alexa's pov
Jacob looked at his hand as if I had burnt him then went right back to work. I guess he didn't feel it too. I had to get out of this room, and away from him. I felt like crying.
"Jacob I am going to go out and grab us something for lunch."
He didn't even look up at me. He just told me to go ahead and take an hour for my lunch. After accidently touching me he feels so disgusted he doesn't want me around. I might as well start looking for another job. Maybe I should just leave and not come back.
This job was everything to me. It's not like I made a pass at him. So, our hands accidently touched. I mean that's not a big deal is it? Now I was stressing. I needed this job. It was the only place that took me seriously.
I loved everyone I worked for. I didn't go get lunch I just went home. I couldn't face Jacob again today. I know I'm not beautiful, but am I that ugly? I mean all he did was touch my hand then got all weird.
Was it just because he's my boss? I have never felt like this before. Normally someone not wanting me doesn't bother me. Hell, I'm used to it. So why now does it hurt so badly?
I called Jacob to tell him I wasn't feeling well, and that I wouldn't be coming back in. If he fired me then so be it. I work hard for his family's company. I'm sure I could find another law firm to work for. I went from being hurt to angry.
He told me to enjoy my weekend. Guess that was that. I walked into my apartment and threw myself down on my sofa. What the hell have I done? I needed this job. I lived paycheck to paycheck.
I wasn't going to let some guys run me out. This was my dream. Jacob may be hot, but he was a jerk if he was going to fire me over a little hand touch. I would take today to have a little pity party then it was back to work.

I was at my own engagement party at the Sterling estate when the world started tilting. Victoria Sterling, my future mother-in-law, smiled coldly as she watched me struggle with a cup of tea that had been drugged to ruin me. Before I could find my fiancé, Ryan, a waiter dragged me into the forbidden West Wing and locked me in a room with Julian Sterling, the family’s "fallen titan" who had been confined to a wheelchair for years. The door burst open to a frenzy of camera flashes and theatrical screams. Victoria framed me as a seductress caught in the act, and Ryan didn't even try to listen to my pleas, calling me "cheap leftovers" before walking away with his pregnant mistress. When I turned to my own family for help, my father signed a document severing our relationship for a five-million-dollar payout from Julian. They traded me like a commodity without a second thought. I didn't understand why my own parents were so eager to sell me, or how Ryan could look at me with such disgust after promising me forever. I was a sacrifice, a pawn used to protect the family's offshore accounts, and I couldn't fathom how every person I loved had a price tag for my destruction. With nowhere left to go, I married Julian in a bleak ceremony at City Hall. He slid a heavy diamond onto my finger and whispered, "We have a war to start." That night, inside his secret penthouse, I watched the paralyzed man stand up from his wheelchair and activate a screen filled with the Sterling family's darkest secrets. The execution had officially begun.
I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."

You can't move on?"
