Chapter 1
Mackenzie stared down at her hands as she prayed Milo would show up. He had been acting strange lately. A part of her thought so. He barely came and when he did, he stayed away from her like she was a mosquito.
Her girlfriend Tera had told her that he was cheating but he doesn't have the nerve to tell me. She doubted her speculation. She was good, sweet, and kind Milo knew that more than anyone. She looked at the clock hung in the restaurant she was and it said 4 pm. Kens had waited since morning hoping on something she knew wouldn't happen.
Milo meant everything to her. He was always there when she needed him. They had been together for two years and now it was gone. They had met during a diving tour in the ocean. She dived for a living and helped tourists explore the ocean of Hawaii. He had this fantastic smile that warm my heart.
At first, she had no intention of being in a relationship with him because it was against the work rules. But he kept showing up every day and when he asked her out she couldn't help but say yes. That day, she felt like her dream had come true. He was good to her and she loved him for that. But she think his actions were just a facade. Kenzie waited a little longer and when he didn't show up she got up and left. Slowly, she started to accept that she had been ditched. She couldn't call her girlfriend because she did scold her and it did make her start to cry.
She found her way to her grandma's maybe eating her casserole soup would cheer her up.
Kenzie lived a few blocks away from her grandma. She had chased her from her home when she clocked twenty-four. Insisting she got married and bear her grandchildren. She took care of her after her parents died in a storm. She was home and her happiness. She didn't mind when she nagged at her to get married and the way she teased her was hilarious. She always turned on the teenage girl's act whenever she did.
She walked up her graveled pathway loving the serenity she felt when she came to her place. She knocked on her door and after a minute she opened the door. Seeing her grandma made her eyes brim with tears. Her grandma sighed and hugged her patting her back to calm her granddaughter down.
"I knew he was er... what do you youngsters call it again?". She said.
"Asshole". Kenzie completed it for her and laughed. Her grandma always knew the right way to cheer her up. She ate her soup and felt her spirit light up to its tastiness.
"I don't know why this keeps happening to me, Grandma. Every man I date always leaves me at the end. I think there is something wrong with me." Kenzie said finishing up her soup.
"There's nothing wrong with you my dear. You just haven't met the right place." She said with warmth in her voice.
" Grandma I tell me about grandpa". Kenzie said although she had heard the story countless of times. But his story always fluttered her heart. Grandma was such a lucky girl to have met him. She started her story and after a while, Kenzie drafted to sleep.
The next morning was chilly, her grandma had left for her daily sales keeping the keys for Kenzie to lock up. She had a shower and ate the beacon and scotch egg she had prepared before she left for her work.
Maddie was the first person Kenzie saw when she walked into the office. She was the receptionist everyone liked but she didn't. She was not someone to confine in and she was more of a whore than an employee.
We greeted and Kenzie went into the locker room to get changed. She wore her swimsuit and went to the pool area where other employees were seated waiting for the meeting to start.
"Hey, kens". Charlie a friend of mine said as she sat beside him.
"Good morning". She replied.
"I heard we are having new tourists today. Men we are going to be hell busy." He said and their boss walked in starting the meeting immediately.
She was assigned to dive for the first day of the tour and the last the day.
After the meeting, she got up to leave but Charlie called her.
"Kens, can I talk to you for a sec." He said.
"Sure". Kenzie said waiting for him to talk.
"I heard about yesterday". He said.
What yesterday she thought as she listened to him.
"I hope you are okay. I knew that Milo guy wasn't worth your time." He said and Kenzie went ridge.
How did he know about her being ditched? Was she being spied on or did someone see her at the restaurant yesterday? Kenzie looked around and noticed people were looking at her with so much pity.
They knew about her dating affair with Milo when it was a secret. Who would have known about it? Her girlfriend didn't work here plus she was out of town with her boyfriend Sid.
This was bad her boss would query her if he heard about her dating rumor with a tourist.
"Kens, could you come to my office ". Her boss said and she knew she was screwed. Why couldn't people mind their business?.
she followed her boss to his office and waited for him to start giving her the rules for breaking the working code. But he sighed and handed her an envelope.
"I'm sorry kens". He said. If She was being fired but why did he assign her to a tour if he was going to fire her in the end?.
Kenzie opened the envelope and saw an invitation. She got curious, why was she handed an invitation instead of a sack letter? She read its content and stood motionless. Milo was getting married. He ditched her to get married.
"I should have stopped him from carrying you along". Her boss said.
So he knew about her relationship with Milo. Kenzie stared at the invitation mostly at the date and venue.
Milo was cheating on her all along for two good years. She finally realized that she was just a replacement that kept him warm.
