Chapter 1 Moving into a New House

Jade's POV

"Welcome to our new home, Jade." Mommy opened the door to our new flat and let me walk in first. I swept my eyes around while hugging my favorite picture book. "How about this? Do you like it, dear?" I forced my lips into a smile.

"I hope this is the last time," I muttered and grabbed my suitcase and went into one room. After only a few seconds of being there, I turned my head. "I chose this room, Mom." Mommy just pulled her lips together and nodded slowly. A room with a balcony overlooking the street. It was nice enough to be able to relax when I was bored.

I sat on the edge of the bed, feeling unexcited. My eyes kept watching the new room, probing. This was the umpteenth time Mommy had asked us to move. We've probably lived in every village in Alaska before and after this, it's probably New York City's turn to explore.

Tired. Of course, who likes to pack up their stuff, move it and unpack it somewhere else in just one to two weeks. Not to mention we have to adapt to a new environment, new neighbors and new rules. Fortunately, Mommy chose home schooling to fulfill my study needs, eighty percent of which were taught by herself. So that I don't have to bother adapting to the complicated school environment.

"Are you asleep, Jade?" I closed my eyes instantly when mommy opened my bedroom door. I heard her footsteps approaching. Then her delicate hand stroked my hair. "You must be very tired. Sweet dreams, sweetheart." Mommy kissed my forehead. I kept my eyes from opening. I still don't understand what mommy is thinking all this time. Hasn't she ever felt tired of her strange behavior or lonely because she has no friends other than me. Isn't it better to gather with friends or family and have fun together? Still, she suddenly decided to move for no apparent reason. After mommy left, my eyes opened again. I got out of bed for a while, observing the closed door. I never argued with her, even though it drove me crazy. However, I knew her well enough. How she took care of me and loved me more than anything.

"Alright. Maybe this is the fate I have to live with." I lay back down. Pulling the blanket up to cover my entire body, which was very tired. Before I knew it, I was asleep.

I ran very fast, passing through the tall pine trees. I stopped for a moment to catch my breath, which was already labored. However, the figure had returned. Like a gust of thick black smoke, he moved as fast as a blink of an eye. I couldn't give up, so I took another step.

"Hahaha. Run as fast as you can, I'll catch you anyway, Jade Carter!" His booming voice made my nape hair stand up. I tried to go even faster. Even though my legs were already starting to hurt and I was getting tired. Suddenly, a tall, gigantic figure dressed in all black with spread bat wings and a creepy face was already in front of me.

"Hello, Jade. You can't run anymore. Hahaha," The figure soared until it made the bright atmosphere suddenly dark, covered by its very wide wings.

I really felt scared. The figure laughed loudly. It opened its mouth wide and showed the sharp teeth lining its jaws. The scent of death wafted out along with its hot breath. When she pulled my leg into that big mouth. A man came while attacking the figure. Thwarting its attempt to devour my body whole.

"Shit! How dare you interfere!" They fought fiercely. The man suddenly transformed into a large, savage, and powerful wolf. But his strength could not match that monstrous figure. He collapsed right in front of me as the creepy figure flung his body with its spiked wings.

"No!" I couldn't see clearly who the man was. It was just that it broke my heart to see him hurt for wanting to help me. Suddenly my body became very hot. A tremendous wave felt like it was about to explode from inside me. I could no longer control my body. That great power had invaded it and in an instant I turned into a huge wolf figure as well. I fought against that monstrous figure so skillfully and almost defeated it. Suddenly, he threw my body onto the forest floor with dominant force. And just as quickly, he stood in front of me with his mouth wide open to absorb all the energy I had. I felt increasingly weak and helpless. In fact, death seemed to be right around the corner. Fortunately, there were thousands of supernatural figures who instantly stopped it. There were vampires, witches, and werewolves. My body fell back to the ground before my life was completely eaten. My body turned back into a human because my strength was gone. I vaguely saw the man crawling, approaching. Then grasped my hand as if to channel the power.

I woke up when the sun was high. My body really felt heavy and sore. Red rashes appeared on my white skin. I remembered what had happened before. But all my memories seemed to fade away. I didn't remember anything. Not even the dream I had last night. Everything seemed blurry in my brain. The more I remembered, the more I lost the memory.

When she saw me come into the kitchen. Mom immediately greeted me with the delicious pancakes she had made. For cooking. This woman is a winner. I can vouch for that.

"Morning, sweetheart. How did you sleep last night? The bed was comfortable, wasn't it?" Mommy gently kissed my forehead.

"Yeah. I think the sheets in that room made me allergic. Just look at what happened." I showed my hands that still had a red rash on them. Mommy looked surprised to see that. However, she remained calm and smiled.

"Okay. I'll clean it myself later. Now eat a lot. After that, we'll go for a walk. I heard there's a pretty park around here."

"Really?" I'm very excited to hear that. Instead of sitting at home all day. Isn't it better to find new experiences out there? Mommy nodded firmly.

Mommy kept her promise. We took a walk in the city park, not far from our flat. The place was quite beautiful. Although there weren't as many trees as in Alaska, the air was quite cool. I love the forest scenery. The cool air, the distinctive wet smell and the variety of wild plants never made me feel bored. Exploring the different types of plants and life there always makes me feel like myself. There seemed to be a strong and special bond between me and the forest. Although I don't know what that means.

"Dear. Stay here, I'll be right back with some refreshments for you!" said Mommy, to which I nodded slowly in reply. She knew perfectly well that I was enjoying the atmosphere.

Peaceful. Every time the wind blows across my face, it blows away some of my unbound blonde hair, and my mind wanders back to my childhood in Afognak. I was running around among the towering pine trees of the forest. Looking for a safe place to hide. Not from wild bears or other wild animals looking to pounce, but from Brad. We always played hide-and-seek there. Unfortunately, Brad always found me, no matter how far I hid.

"For the umpteenth time I found you, Jade. You'll never be able to hide from me."

That sentence is always ringing in my ears. It seemed to be a memory that was always embedded in my mind. I dug deeper into my childhood memories. Until I accidentally heard a loud enough voice. I reflexively approached when I saw a man falling from a skateboard not far from where I was sitting.

"Are you okay?" I asked anxiously while helping him up.

"I'm fine. Thank you." He looked at my face, then his forehead furrowed. "Are you new around here? I don't think I've seen you before?"

"Yes. I just moved in last night."

"Oh, how appropriate? I've been here many times and never seen you before. Oh, yes. May I know your name?" The man said matter-of-factly. I was a little confused. Honestly, this was the first time I talked to a stranger without mommy beside me. I thought back. Isn't it good that I'm starting to make new friends? At least I won't feel bored anymore while staying here.

"Sure. My name is-"

"Stop it!" Mommy suddenly came.
