And can she trust a man who is bent on destroying everything she loves?
New York City's skyline sparkled like diamonds against the dark canvas of the night sky. The air was filled with the hum of traffic and the chatter of pedestrians and the wail of sirens in the distance. Sophia Carter was like a lighthouse among all this, her long curly brown hair sparkled in the air like a drizzle.
It was Sophia, an up and coming event planner in her mid-20s, and for the past couple of weeks she had been working tirelessly on a charity gala for one of the biggest organizations in town. This gala was at the luxurious Plaza Hotel, and Sophia had not scrimped on making sure every detail was perfect.
Sophia looked around the crowded ballroom, her gaze finally landing on a tall, imposing figure standing at the bar. His eyes were sharp blue bullets, his features hewn from granite. He had slicked black hair, a junkyard dog forehead and a jaw set in a permanent scowl.
A chill passed through Sophia as their gazes connected. It was the way he looked at her, as if he could see her all the way to her marrow. She turned away from him immediately, back to business.
As the hours passed, Sophia flitted from group to group, making sure everyone was enjoying themselves. As a consummate professional, she had a warm smile and quick wit that made even the most challenging guests ease up.
Near the end of the night, Sophia approached the bar where the man from earlier was still holding his ground at the bar. As she approached he turned to her, eyes narrowing to take in her appearance.
"Can I get you a drink?" he asked his voice low and smooth.
Sophia paused, uncertain of the man's directness. But there was something about him that called to her, something that made her feel like she'd never be able to get enough of him.
"A glass of champagne, I think," she said at last, her voice almost a whisper.
The man nodded and waved to the bartender for glass of champagne for Sophia. While their drinks were prepared, Sophia kept sneaking peaks at the man. He was familiar and something about him made her feel that she must have known him.
After a few minutes of drinking, the man turned to Sophia and introduced himself.
"I'm Maverick William," his voice low and ready.
Sophia opened her eyes a little wider, absorbing the name. Maverick William was a billionaire businessman, infamous for his heartless business ideas and his love for gorgeous girls.
"I'm Sophia Carter," she finally said, her voice so low it was barely a whisper.
The corners of Maverick's eyes creased slightly at the sight of Sophia. She was different; he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
As they talked, Sophia started to feel a strange connection to Maverick that she herself was unable to explain. He felt familiar.
By this time in the evening, Sophia and Maverick were deep in conversation needless to say, talking about everything from business to music to their mutual appreciation of art.
Before she knew it, they had been talking for hours, but not until the evening was winding down did Sophia realize this. The room was clearing and staff was beginning to clean up.
As they were saying their goodbyes, Maverick looked at Sophia and asked for her number.
"I want to see you again," he said, his tone deep and self-assured.
Sophia hesitated, caught off-guard by how forward Maverick was. But there was just something about him, something that made her think that she couldn't say no to him.
She gave him her number, and her heart fluttered when Maverick's fingers grazed hers.
When Sophia and Professor Rhodes parted ways, she felt her heart racing. She knew her meet with Maverick William was just the tip of the iceberg of a wild ride.
Even after her extravagant encounter with Maverick William at the Plaza Hotel, the impossibility of Sophia shaking off the feeling he had left her with. He was someone in her mind who she felt like she had known before.
She flagged down a cab and told the driver an address, her mind elsewhere as the city lights streaked past on the street outside her window. After Sophia paid, the taxi parked her in front of her apartment building, and she climbed out.
Sophia: changing into my hot pink pajamas and plopping down on my couch with a glass of sauvignon, this makes me wonder what was it about Maverick that I just couldn't stop looking for,Was it the piercing blue eyes, or the chiseled features? Or was it something greater, that resonated with her more on a philosophical level?
While sipping her wine and reflecting on the question, Sophia's phone rang with a new message. She answered, and her heart almost leapt out of her chest when she saw Maverick's name pop up on her phone.
"Would you like to meet for dinner tomorrow evening?" the message read.
Sophia gingerly hovered over the keyboard, mulling over what to do. There was a part of her that wanted to say yes, to see what might happen between her and Maverick. But another part of her was gently cautioning caution, don't get carried away with your feelings.
Ultimately Sophia's curiosity won out. She composed a reply and pressed send.
that message sent.
Sophia filled with excitement as she awaited a response from Maverick. Her gut told her that this was going to be one night to remember with his fat ass.
Maverick replied a few minutes later.
"I'll pick you up at 7pm," it said.
Sophia smiled to herself while reading the message. And something told her she was in for a wild Disney ride.
With another day coming to an end, Sophia mused on what the new day would unleash. What if her dinner date with Maverick was a disaster, though or the beginning of something special?
Only time would tell.
