The sun was warm on my skin and i was trying to tune out my two best friends as they were arguing about God knows what. We were walking back home from school. It was the middle of the term we were seniors in High school. Everybody was under pressure on what next to do and i wasn't an exception.
"College is highly overrated," Keith said dramatically, walking in front of us. His dark brown curls caught the sunlight, and a grin tugged at the corners of his mouth. "I'll just work in Dad's company. You know, skip the whatnot of being a student for four years and inherit the company."
Amara snorted. "Because nepotism is a noble life choice?"
"Exactly," Jayden replied with a wink.
I laughed, but it didn't quite reach my eyes. I wasn't paying full attention to what they were both discussing. I was thinking about what i would do. It was just me and my mum and we were not well off. She couldn't afford to send me to college and we both know even if she keeps telling me not to worry about it. I would need a full scholarship to be able to attend college and study.
"I'm not even sure anymore if it's better to have the freedom that college brings or to avoid the stress and be under my fathers raider everyday" Keith say groaning while running his hand through his hair.
"You should be glad you even have options, some of us have no choice" I said.
"You would love to go to college Rosie, you love studying" He said ruffling my hair while i swat his hand away.
Amara rolled her eyes and picked at the hem of her skirt. "Well, while Jayden becomes all corporate, I'll be in Italy, sketching ruins and eating gelato. I'm applying to the Florence Academy of Art."
"Sounds classy," I said and nudged at her.
Amara smiled and started skipping "It is. It is everything i ever dreamed of"
"What about you, I'm sure you've applied to those top Universities. What program did you apply for," Keith said.
"Probably something sciency" Amara turned and said
I nodded "Yeah, but I still want to keep my options open"
"That's alright," Amara said "there's really no rush"
We kept talking about anything and everything, and for a moment, everything felt normal, simple like i wasn't about to go home to sulk about my family's financial trouble.
We got to a junction were we separated. "bye guys, see you tomorrow" i said and waved at them. They both lived in the richer side of town so they were walking together.
"Bye Rosie" Amara said and hugged me. I smiled at them as they left but inside, I felt a weight pressing against my chest. I hadn't told them my mum couldn't afford tuition, or that i'd spent the past few months applying to every scholarship I could find, hoping, praying, that one would come through.
I didn't want pity. I didn't want to be that friend. So I stayed quiet and let the dream linger in the air with theirs.
I sighed and hasten my steps so i could get back home.

Elodie took a deep breath and knocked, the sound echoing in the quiet corridor. A moment of silence passed, broken only by the pounding of her heart.
