"Lysander? Please, tell me this is some kind of sick joke," Astrida wheezed, her voice cracking as she clutched her bruised ribs. "I'm your kin. We grew up together. How could you do this?"
Lysander leaned over the edge, his expression cold and detached. "Kin is just a word for people who share your blood, Astrida. It doesn't mean they have to share your survival. The Mercer family needs a sacrifice to appease the rift, and you were always the softest piece of the puzzle. Just stay quiet. The specters like it when you're quiet."
"You're actually going to leave me here to rot? You think the family will just let you walk away with this?"
"I'm the heir, darling. They'll believe whatever story I spin," Lysander chuckled, his voice devoid of empathy. "Sleep well. If you're lucky, the shadow-stalkers will make it quick."
The torchlight vanished. The darkness surged inward, heavy and suffocating, thick with the sound of skittering claws against stone.
"Lysander! Don't you dare! Come back here!" Astrida screamed, but her voice died in the oppressive silence. She scrambled backward, her breath hitching as a low, guttural growl echoed from the gloom.
A shadow detached itself from the wall-a mass of elongated limbs and pulsating, necrotic flesh. It was a low-level specter, but to Astrida, it looked like a nightmare made manifest. It lunged, its freezing touch grazing her arm, leaving behind a trail of necrotic frost.
"Get away from me!" she shrieked, backing into a corner. She had no weapon, no armor, just the thin silk of her ritual robes and a frantic, thrumming heart.
"You're scared, aren't you?" a voice purred, not from the specter, but from the very air around her. "Deliciously terrified. That fear... it's a catalyst, Astrida."
The specter reared up, preparing for a killing strike. Astrida didn't have time to process the voice. She squeezed her eyes shut, sobbing. "I don't want to die here. Not because of him. Not like this!"
The creature's claws hovered inches from her throat. Suddenly, the air turned white-hot.

"What is this? Who's there?" Astrida gasped, staring at the holographic script floating in the air.
[The Nightmare System is hungry, Astrida. Do you wish to survive? Do you wish to see Lysander suffer for this?]
Astrida's hand shook as she reached toward the shimmering blue light. The specter shrieked, sensing the surge of power.
"I'll take whatever deal you want," she whispered, her voice trembling but gaining a sharp, dangerous edge. "Give me the power to tear them all down. I'll take it. I accept the pact."

[Contracted Overseer: Jericho Vance has been summoned.]
A man materialized in the center of the dark cavern, his presence so overwhelming it made the specter recoil and dissipate into black smoke. He stood with a predatory grace, his eyes glowing with a faint, violet luminescence as he looked down at her.
"Well now," he drawled, his voice a smooth, intoxicating rasp that vibrated in her very bones. "You certainly have a flair for the dramatic, don't you, little bird?"
Astrida stared up at him, her heart hammering against her ribs, not with fear, but with a strange, dark electricity. "Who are you? Are you the one who saved me?"
Jericho Vance stepped closer, his heavy coat billowing around him despite the lack of wind. He reached out, his gloved fingers tilting her chin upward so she was forced to meet his gaze.
"I am the one who owns your survival now," he murmured, his thumb brushing against her lower lip. "And I think you're going to find that the price of this contract is much more... intimate than you bargained for."
Astrida swallowed hard, the taste of his power intoxicating. "Intimate? Is that supposed to scare me?"
"No, darling," Jericho chuckled, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear. "It's supposed to make you crave me."
