I was a Dragonless orphan taken in by a noble family, forced to be the substitute bride for my cowardly stepsister to marry a comatose, cursed Dragon Lord. To ensure I couldn't refuse, my stepmother drugged my wine at a family dinner. She locked me in a dark hotel room with a stranger, planning to have me ruined so I'd have no choice but to take her daughter's place. I barely escaped the terrifying, burning man in that room, only to be dragged back to the estate. When I stood in the grand foyer and refused the marriage, my stepmother smiled coldly. "It would be a terrible shame if your foster mother's health were to suddenly decline." She threatened to murder the only person who ever loved me. Even my childhood best friend betrayed me, selling me out for a plot of land and threatening to frame my healing skills as witchcraft. I was completely cornered, forced to walk into a tomb of a marriage as a sacrificial lamb just so my stepsister could chase after a handsome prince. Why did my life have to be treated like disposable trash for their greedy ambitions? But they severely underestimated me. Before leaving, I extorted a massive fortune from my stepmother as my dowry. And on my wedding night, when I realized my "comatose" husband was actually the lethal, fully awake man from the hotel room, I didn't panic. I looked into his murderous eyes and offered him a deadly deal. This time, I was going to burn their entire world to the ground.

Substitute Bride: My Comatose Husband Awakes Chapter 1

SERAPHINA POV:

I shoved open the heavy oak door, my vision blurring. The spiked mead churned in my stomach, a hot, syrupy poison dragging me down. I stumbled against a cold stone pillar in the back hallway of the tavern, the rough surface scraping my cheek.

Heavy footsteps echoed behind me. "She went this way," a gruff voice muttered. The Duke's thugs. Curses followed, something about losing a "worthless Dragonless girl."

My heart hammered against my ribs. My legs felt like lead, but I forced them forward, desperate to find a place to hide. The dim corridor stretched on, each shadow a potential enemy.

At the far end, a door was slightly ajar. A faint, chilling aura emanated from it, a cold that seemed to push back against the tavern's noise and warmth. It was enough to make the thugs hesitate for a split second.

That was all I needed. I didn't think. I lunged, slipping through the opening into the darkness beyond and threw my weight against the door. My fumbling hands found a heavy iron bolt and slammed it home just as their heavy boots rounded the corner.

The room was pitch black. The air was thick, not with dust, but with a scent that made my blood suddenly boil-ozone and molten brimstone. It was the smell of a storm, of a forge, of something ancient and powerful.

Before my eyes could adjust, a massive, scorching hand clamped over my mouth, another arm like an iron bar pinning me against the rough wooden door.

I struggled, kicking and clawing, but it was useless. The man's strength was overwhelming. His body heat was a furnace, searing through the cheap linen of my dress.

A low, dangerous growl rumbled from his chest. It wasn't human. It was the sound of a predator, deep and guttural, evaluating its cornered prey.

Panic gave me a final burst of strength. I bit down hard on the hand covering my mouth. The taste of copper filled my senses, but his grip didn't even tremble.

He didn't flinch. Instead, he leaned closer, his breath ghosting over my ear. "Quiet, little rat."

The voice was a deep, raspy command. The sheer authority in it froze my limbs more effectively than any threat. I went still, my body trembling uncontrollably.

Outside, the thugs started banging on the door. "Seraphina! We know you're in there!" Their voices were muffled by the thick wood.

The man's grip tightened, a silent warning. The proximity, the sheer force of him, sent a terrifying jolt through me where our skin met. It was like lightning, sharp and hot.

My drug-laced blood surged. But it wasn't fear. It was an inexplicable, agonizing pull toward him, a deep, primal need that terrified me more than the men outside.

He let out a sharp intake of breath, his own body going rigid as if he'd been struck. The scent of ozone and brimstone intensified, becoming almost intoxicating. The Fated Flame. The recognition hit me like a physical blow-a moment of soul-deep peace amidst the chaos, a calm that clashed violently with the poison in my veins.

He dropped his hand from my mouth. His fingers, burning hot, traced the frantic, erratic pulse at my throat.

The banging outside stopped. "Forget her. The Duke said alive, but he won't care if she's roughed up. We'll find her in the morning." Their footsteps faded, swallowed by the noise of the tavern below.

The immediate danger was gone, but the drug's heat was a raging fire in my blood, threatening to consume what little sanity I had left.

My legs gave out. I slumped forward, but his strong arms caught me, pulling me against his solid chest. My feverish face was pressed into the rough fabric of his tunic.

I desperately tapped into my hidden instinct, the one thing my guardian, Mrs. Gable, had taught me to conceal. The Dragon Healer within me screamed to circulate my own blood, to fight the aphrodisiac, to burn it out.

He misunderstood my squirming. "Don't test my patience," he growled, his voice rough and laced with a dangerous restraint.

I grabbed the lapels of his tunic, pulling myself up. His body was a paradox, icy-hot, a catalyst. I used his temperature, his sheer presence, to focus the fight inside me, to burn out the drug's toxins with my own internal fire.

For hours, we were locked in a silent, desperate struggle in the dark. It was a battle for my survival, waged against a backdrop of overwhelming physical magnetism that left me breathless and terrified.

As the first hint of dawn crept through a crack in the shutters, the drug finally neutralized, leaving me exhausted but clear-headed. His grip had loosened, and he'd fallen into a sudden, death-like sleep.

I slipped from his arms. I grabbed my torn cloak, glancing back at the imposing silhouette on the narrow bed. A part of me, the part that recognized the Fated Flame, wanted to stay. The part that knew how to survive screamed at me to run.

I could never let him find me. A Dragonless girl from the Bone Wastes and a man who smelled of power and brimstone? That story only ended one way.

I carefully unlocked the door and slipped out into the freezing morning air. My mind raced, already forming a dozen plans.

I navigated the empty alleys of the predawn town, my bare feet cold on the cobblestones. I had to get back to the Ashford estate before anyone realized I had survived the night.

As I approached the servant's entrance, my heart sank. A fine, lacquered carriage, its horses already harnessed and steaming in the cold, was waiting in the courtyard. Lady Beatrice's carriage.
