She is the secret heiress to the very empire he has sworn to destroy. Elena Sterling took a job at Vance Global Enterprises to prove she could conquer the corporate jungle on merit alone away from her father's shadow and the weight of the Sterling name. But her ambition instantly collides with a terrifying force: Julian Vance. Brilliant, ruthless, and driven by a decades-old vendetta, Julian is the city's most feared corporate raider. And his next target is Sterling Global. When Julian discovers Elena's sharp intellect, instead of firing her, he promotes her to be his lead financial strategist for the hostile takeover meant to crush her family. Now, Elena is trapped in a high-stakes game of corporate espionage working as Julian's general by day, while secretly coding firewall protections to save her father's legacy by night. As late-night strategy sessions blur into electric tension, the lines between enemy and ally dissolve. Julian knows she is hiding a devastating secret, and Elena knows that surrendering to her ruthless boss means risking everything she loves. In a war where millions are on the line and betrayal lurks in every corner, they are about to discover a much more dangerous enemy: falling in love with the person you were meant to destroy.

Working With The Devil. Chapter 1 The Coffee and the Corporate Shark.

The Digital clock read twenty-four hours at 7:45 AM, glowing like a tiny, mocking eye in the dim, gray light of the early morning. Outside the sprawling glass facade of Vance Global Enterprises, the Chicago skyline was a sharp silhouette against a bruised, rainy sky, but inside, the atmosphere was already suffocatingly charged.

"If the quarterly liquidity report isn't on my desk by eight o'clock sharp, Elena, don't bother walking through those double doors."

The phone line went dead with a dry, metallic click that echoed hollowly in the quiet, half-empty cubicle row. I slowly lowered the receiver, letting out a long, shuddering breath that rattled my tightly wound nerves. Julian Vance. The youngest, most ruthless corporate raider in the city and, unfortunately, my boss.

I dragged my gaze back to the glowing screen of my monitor, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with frantic, practiced speed. Across the room, the office was virtually a ghost town, save for a handful of other exhausted interns and junior analysts who, just like me, were running on pure caffeine, cold panic, and quiet desperation.

Nobody in this building knew who I really was. To the human resources department of Vance Global, I was simply Elena, a broke, ambitious business graduate with average credentials, trying to claw her way up the corporate ladder from the absolute bottom. They looked right through me, treating me like part of the office furniture.

My phone buzzed sharply against the polished wood of the desk, vibrating with an urgency that made my stomach drop. I flipped. A text message flashed across the locked screen:

Father: The Board meeting is tomorrow, Elena. Drop this ridiculous charade at the office and come home. You belong at the head of our table, not fetching overpriced lattes for a Vance.

My thumb hovered over the screen, a surge of hot, rebellious fury rising instantly in my chest. I tapped out a sharp reply. Not a chance, Dad. Let me build something of my own for once.

I blocked the notification before he could send back another barrage of demands. I didn't want my father's gilded empire, nor did I want to inherit a throne built on decades of cutthroat politics and family expectations. I wanted to prove to myself and to the world that I could survive and conquer the corporate jungle on sheer merit alone. Even if that exact jungle happened to be owned by the man my father despised more than anyone else on earth: Julian Vance.

"Elena!"

The sharp, breathless whisper cut through my thoughts. Sarah, a fellow project coordinator, sprinted down the aisle toward my desk, her expensive heels clicking frantically against the imported marble floor. "Mr. Vance is early. He's already in the executive suite, and from what security says, he looks like he's ready to fire half the floor before the sun even finishes rising. Do you have his black coffee?"

"Right here," I muttered, snatching the insulated matte-black travel mug off my desk alongside the thick, leather-bound folder containing the finalized Q3 projections.

I glanced down at the bottom corner of my screen: 7:58 AM. Two minutes to spare.

I scrambled up from my chair, dodging sleek glass partitions and modern minimalist art installations that screamed expensive taste, and hurried down the private corridor toward the top-floor executive suite. When I finally reached the heavy, soundproof mahogany doors of his office, I took a deep, steadying breath, smoothed down the pencil skirt of my sensible navy blue suit, and pushed the door open.

Julian Vance was standing motionless by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, staring out at the sprawling, rain-streaked cityscape as if he already owned every single building, street, and soul within it. He wore a bespoke charcoal-grey suit that fit his broad, powerful shoulders to absolute perfection, his dark hair falling in slight, casual disarray across a brow furrowed with deep, intense concentration.

He didn't turn around as I slipped into the room, but predators of his caliber always feel a shift in the air.

"You're thirty seconds late, Elena," his deep, gravelly voice cut through the heavy silence, rich with a casual, terrifying authority.

"Traffic on the bridge was backed up, Mr. Vance," I replied smoothly, keeping my voice entirely even, masking the rapid thumping of my heart as I stepped forward to place his coffee and the leather folder on his immaculate, uncluttered desk. "And the Q3 regional projections are complete. Every discrepancy from the western branches has been thoroughly ironed out."

Finally, slowly, he turned around.

Julian's eyes were a sharp, piercing shade of steel-blue, currently narrowed with a look of skepticism and analytical coldness that had reduced grown men, seasoned executives, and rival CEOs to stammering wrecks in high-stakes boardrooms. He walked slowly toward his desk, his long, deliberate stride eating up the distance, his gaze locked onto mine as if he were trying to dissect my thoughts layer by layer.

He stopped just inches away, tall enough, broad enough, that I had to tilt my chin up slightly to meet his intense gaze. The crisp, clean scent of expensive cologne, rain, and rich cedarwood instantly filled the air around us, wrapping around me like a cage.

"You look tired, Elena," he murmured, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an unexpected, dangerous layer of warmth that felt entirely out of place in a corporate office. "Are you spending your nights studying market trends, or are you just wasting your time?"

I swallowed hard, refusing to look away, letting a spark of quiet, unyielding defiance flash in my eyes. "I am entirely focused on this company, Mr. Vance. You have nothing to worry about on my end."

A slow, cryptic smile touched the corner of his lips, a predatory smile that promised absolute trouble.

"Good," he said quietly, leaning just a fraction closer, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before snapping back up to lock onto my eyes. "Because starting today, you aren't just handling the regional reports. You're going to be my shadow for the upcoming hostile takeover acquisition. If you make even one single mistake... you're gone."

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. A hostile takeover. The exact strategic move my family's corporation was currently fighting tooth and nail to block.

I forced a tight, entirely professional smile onto my face, stepping willingly right into the lion's den.

"I won't let you down, Mr. Vance."
