Accept a contract or follow his heart? Punished for her father's mistake, Rosamund Gibson has been demoted from Beta's Heir to a simple Omega. Her life resumes down to working and getting beaten. But that is about to change. Kurt and Rosamund will have their paths crossed and will have to learn to overcome the challenges that separate them from happiness. Will they be able to do it or another heartbreak is what awaits them?
"You weren't manly enough!" Those words hurt too much. They were like knives being stabbed straight into Kurt's heart.
"I should kill you!" He said, almost out of breath. And then, he would do something that would hurt even more. "I, Kurt Wade Dolph, Alpha of the Shadow Moon Pack, reject you... Alexandra Mackenzie Dolph, as my eternal mate."
After that, just darkness.
KURT'S POV
The night couldn't have been more boring. All that chatter about subjects that didn't interest me at all was extremely fastidious and I just wanted a chance to get away from it. At least the food was good, but the drinks could have been better. Or stronger.
"I'm going to get some air, Finn," I said to my Beta, Finley Hawking, patting him on the shoulder before walking away from the room. He didn't answer anything, just nodded, indicating that he had understood.
The double doors that led to the gardens were wide open, allowing a pleasant breeze to enter the room. I walked further away, so as not to be too close to the crowd of werewolves. The males wanted to talk politics or battles; the females wanted to flirt; and then there were those who were desperate to be free of their beloved daughters, hoping that I would make one of them my future Luna. As if that would ever happen.
The porch was empty, for which I was grateful to Selene. A little peace, and... I stopped to listen better for what I thought was a moan. Yes, it was a moan, but not one of pleasure. I know I was frowning, because according to Finley, that was what I did when I was concentrating on something or irritated. And I was irritated.
I thought about ignoring it, but it was impossible, after all, if I was there to get away from the others and relax, there was no way that would happen while I heard someone crying. Okay! Someone was crying and I wasn't going to pretend I didn't hear it!
"Oh, that's just great!" I cursed, after giving a small kick to one of the balusters with my foot and pushing the marble parapet with both hands. I would have to follow that sound that took away my chance of peace at that insipid party.
When in human form, our senses were not as sharp, however, they were still far superior to those of humans and I, being an Alpha, could sense much more than the others, both smells and noises.
"P-please..." a female voice pleaded. And then, the smell of blood invaded my nostrils. I quickened my pace and there was the scene: a figure huddled on the ground, trying to protect her head with her hands and her torso with her legs, while a blond-haired werewolf kicked her, and two others watched it.
"What the hell is going on?!" I asked and I think it was loud enough, because the three attackers jumped, their eyes wide open. While the two observers seemed to tremble in fear, the blond one relaxed.
"Ah, Alpha Kurt!" He greeted me, smiling sideways, as if I were his partner."We're teaching this thieving omega a lesson." He pointed to the creature on the floor, most likely the supposed delinquent.
"Lesson? You were giving her a beating!" I retorted. "Is that how things are solved in this pack? She is clearly much smaller than you. And an omega, no less!"
"She stole, Alpha!" He let out a snort of derision as he cast a disgusted glance in the victim's direction. "And she's nothing more than the daughter of a useless werewolf!"
"I think you better get away from her, pup," my voice went out threatening. I saw him swallow hard, but he didn't lower his head.
"I'm Gabriel Redley. You can't threaten me like that! I live here and soon I'll be the Alpha!" Even though he was scared, he kept his head held high. "I'm neither a pup nor your inferior!"
"Oh, you're Gabriel, Alpha Idris's nephew," I said with a mocking smile. "And I'm an Alpha, kid. You're nothing more than a brat who, who knows, might not even make it through the night and thinks he can behave like an Alpha!" His lower lip trembled. Excellent. I put my hands in my pants pockets. "Let's see what your uncle thinks of all this. But until then, get away from that female. Obey while I'm still being nice."
Gabriel, despite seeming to want to confront me, couldn't. I only needed to use a bit of Alpha aura for him to finally give in. I used the mind link to communicate with my Beta, asking him to find the Alpha of the Midnight Pack. There was a situation that needed to be resolved immediately.
"Yes, Alpha. I'm already looking for him," Finley replied.
I approached the omega on the ground and she moved away from me as I got closer, shrinking even more. I couldn't see her face. She kept her head down and her brown hair formed a curtain. When she moved a little further away, the light from one of the side lamps, near one of the bushes, illuminated her and her hair shone. It was reddish. I didn't like females with hair that color and I immediately felt a certain repulsion towards her.
"What's going on here?" Alpha Idris' voice made me turn my head and move away from the omega, which pleased me a lot.
"This little wolf was beating up an omega. Him and his two friends."
I said seriously, looking at the blond male, approximately forty years old, a little shorter than me. He glanced at the figure behind me and at his nephew, as well as the boy's other two accomplices who, I must say, were about to piss themselves with fear.
"Gabriel, what the hell?" Idris was clearly in a bad mood.
"She was stealing, uncle!" Gabriel said, looking at me boldly. "I was just teaching her the gravity of her actions. If we don't nip this evil in the bud, other omegas will think they can follow in her footsteps and our pack will be in a mess!"
He seemed more confident, like a small child in the presence of parents who pat him on the head. Pathetic.
"What did she steal?" Idris asked, bringing his hand to his face and pinching the tip of his nose between his thumb and forefinger, his eyes closed. His right foot tapped lightly on the floor.
"This!" Gabriel pulled something out of his pocket.
When he raised his hand, I couldn't believe what I saw. It was a small wad of money.
"She stole money? Your money?" I asked and looked at her. She shook her head, denying it. I looked back at Gabriel.
"She stole from someone! How could she have money?
"Are you telling me you don't even know who this belongs to? Didn't you see her steal it?" I snapped, holding myself back from jumping on that little shit.
"Gabriel, how do you know she stole it?" Idris asked. I could see that he wasn't angry with his nephew, he was just annoyed at having to solve that problem. And, most likely, at being 'embarrassed' in front of me.
I'm not bragging, but my pack and I held a special status in that kingdom. Not only because of my connection to the King, but because we were organized and strong.
"She's an omega. How would she have money?" Gabriel insisted, using a tone that indicated that the conclusion he had reached was obvious.
"Where did you get that money from?" I crouched down and asked the omega, trying to be as gentle as possible with my words. And I didn't have that gift.
She was shaking, but I could tell by her breathing that she was starting to babble. Gabriel started to try to say something, but I held up my hand, indicating that he should be quiet.
"If you don't tell me, I won't be able to help you."
"I-I... I saved it. My parents... They left some for me," the voice was low, but it sounded very nice to my ears. Very pleasant.
"If her parents left it to her, then it can't be hers!" Gabriel finally said, stamping one of his feet on the floor like a sulking child, and I glared at him. He was too bold for his own good!
"And why is that?" I asked, using the little patience I had left.
"She is the daughter of traitors! She is an omega, the daughter of a useless werewolf! Her father failed and that is why we lost our Luna!" Gabriel looked at her with contempt, but there was something else there, I just didn't know exactly what it was. "They were deposed, so this money is NOT hers!"
"Gabriel..." Idris started to speak and I looked at him, who soon fell silent.
"She's coming with me."
I don't even know what possessed me to say something like that, but I spoke before thinking.
"I beg your pardon?" Idris asked, astonished. I could see in his eyes that he didn't expected that. Neither did I!
"I am completely against this kind of intervention. If you don't want her, I will take her with me," paying for the sins of one's parents was not something I would tolerate.
"But..."
"Do you have something against it, Alpha Idris?" My pack was the largest in the country. I was not the monster everyone thinks, but yes, I was a warrior who didn't forgive in battle. Having Lycan blood in my veins helped me. And no one would dare challenge me. The Midnight Pack was no match for the Shadow Moon, my pack.
"No, I'm not against it. You can take her," Idris's voice came out dry.
"Uncle!" Gabriel protested with disbelief written all over his face.
"Quiet!" Idris growled at his nephew and looked at me, with a mixture of fear and respect. "You can take this omega, Alpha Kurt. Do whatever you want with her."
