Chapter 1 You just ruined our engagement in a second

Natalia point of view.

My chest constricts and I squeeze my eyes shut, tears of sadness already rolling down my cheeks.

"Natalia, let me explain."

"What is there to explain?" I whisper.

"I... I'm sorry," he says, his voice weak and pathetic.

"Save it." I step up to him, pointing at Abby behind me. "You have some nerve. I told you I wouldn't go down without a fight. I guess you're too stupid to listen."

"Natalia."

"Shut up." I cut him off. "You disgust me."

The girl in my bedroom stirs and she turns to me, her face flushed and her hair in disarray.

I suck in a shaky breath.

"Abby, get out of my bed."

"Natalia," she pleads, but I can't look at her. I can barely stand to see her.

She's my sister, for God's sake.

"I'll destroy you," I whisper, stepping closer to her, rage filling me at the sight of her naked body on my bed.

She sits up, pulling the sheets around her, her eyes wide with fear.

Dave pushes me away from her, shielding her with his body.

"Don't you touch her!"

"Oh, so now you're protecting her?" I laugh, but it's sad and hollow. "How long has this been going on?"

"Natalia," he murmurs, running a hand through his hair. "Let me explain."

He grabs my shoulders, shaking me, trying to get me to look at him, but I jerk away.

"You have ten seconds to get out of my apartment. If you're still here when I count to ten, I will destroy both of you."

"Natalia." Dave tries to plead with me.

I look at Abby, watching her cower into the bed. Tears are running down her face.

"You bitch," I hiss. "You disgusting fucking bitch."

"Don't be like that," she starts, but I cut her off.

"I hate you both," I say, turning away from them. "Get out of my house!"

"Fine." He curses, and I hear him get off the bed. "But this isn't the end of this." His words are sharp and hard as he grabs his shirt from the floor. "It's far from over."

I turn to him, tears in my eyes.

"I hope it is. I never want to see your face again." My words break.

"I don't believe that." He says, looking at me. "And I hope you don't either."

"I mean it." My voice breaks. "You're disgusting. I hate you."

"I know you don't mean it," he whispers. "Please, don't say that. We're still friends."

"No, we're not." I whisper. "Go. I want nothing more to do with you."

He steps up to me, but I step back.

"I hate you," I repeat, my voice shaking.

"I'm sorry," he murmurs. "I love you, Natalia. I do."

"Get out of here!" I scream at him, crying. "I hate you!"

"Okay." He steps away from me, his eyes darkening with anger. "But I love you. I really do."

"I hate you." I whisper. He picks up his shoes, opening my door, and leaving.

I listen for the sound of the front door closing, then fall to my knees on the floor, sobbing. Tears run down my face. I pull the ring from my finger and throw it across the room, my body shaking as I cry.

"Natalia?" I hear my sister's voice from behind me.

I turn around to her.

"Get out." I scream, launching to my feet. "Leave me alone!"

She walks to me and pulls me into a hug, tears running down her cheeks.

"I'm so sorry," she whispers, clutching me to her. "I'm sorry."

"Don't touch me!" I scream, pushing her away from me. "Get off! You whore!"

I'm crying so hard, I can barely breathe. My body is shaking.

She shakes her head and sobbing uncontrollably.

"Don't say that." She cries.

"GET OFF!" I scream. "GO! NOW!"

I throw a lamp at her, the sound of it crashing against the wall making my blood run cold.

She grabs her dress, running out of my bedroom and to the front door, slamming it behind her.

I walk to the front door and lock it, turning around to look at the destruction of my apartment.

I fall to my knees, crying for a long time. The pain of betrayal is too much for me to bear. I'm going to have to find a new roommate. I'm going to need a new man.

I'm going to have to forget Dave and Abby and move on. So I decided going to the nearest bar alone.

"Here is your drink, ma'am," the bartender says, placing a drink in front of me.

"Thank you." I take a sip of the vodka, closing my eyes against the burn.

"Do you want another?"

"No." I shake my head. "Not right now."

The bartender walks to the next person at the counter and I watch her as she makes a martini for the couple. I take another sip of my drink, and then sigh, running a hand through my hair. I rub my forehead.

I need to get drunk to forget about the events of the day. To forget what Dave did to me. I reach in my purse and pull out another hundred-dollar bill, waving it at the bartender.

"Another." I nod.

She smiles at me and nods, walking over to the vodka. She makes me another and I take a few sips. Then I realize that I'm the last person left in the bar.

"Sorry." She says, "But it's closing time."

"Oh." I blink at her. "It is?"

"Yeah," she nods. "Come back tomorrow."

I nod, standing up. The wine makes me slightly dizzy.
