Camilo Ferreira Botelho Castelo Branco foi um escritor português, romancista, cronista, crítico, dramaturgo, historiador, poeta e tradutor. Foi ainda o 1.º Visconde de Correia Botelho, título concedido pelo rei D. Luís. Foi um dos escritores mais prolíferos e marcantes da literatura portuguesa. Há quem diga que, em 1846, foi iniciado na Maçonaria do Norte,o que é muito estranho ou algo contraditório, pois há indicações de que, pela mesma altura, na Revolta da Maria da Fonte, lutava a favor dos Miguelistas como "ajudante às ordens do general escocês Reinaldo MacDonell", que criaram a Ordem de São Miguel da Ala precisamente para combater a Maçonaria. Do mesmo modo, muita da sua literatura demonstra defender os ideais legitimistas e conservadores ou tradicionais, desaprovando os que lhe são contrários.Teve uma vida atribulada, que lhe serviu muitas vezes de inspiração para as suas novelas. Foi o primeiro escritor de língua portuguesa a viver exclusivamente dos seus escritos literários. Apesar de ter de escrever para o público, sujeitando-se assim aos ditames da moda, conseguiu manter uma escrita muito original.Dentro da sua vasta obra, também se encontra colaboração da sua autoria em diversas publicações periódicas como O Panorama, a Revista Universal Lisbonense, A illustração luso-brasileira (1856-1859), Revista Contemporânea de Portugal e Brasil (1859-1865), Archivo pittoresco (1857-1868), A Esperança (1865-1866), Gazeta Literária do Porto (1868) (também chamada de Gazeta de Camilo Castelo Branco devido à sua extensa colaboração como redator), a revista literária República das Letras (1875), Ribaltas e Gambiarras (1881), A illustração portugueza (1884-1890), e a título póstumo nas revistas A semana de Lisboa (1893-1895), Serões (1901-1911) e Feira da Ladra (1929-1943) (font: Wikipedia).
